School has only been in session a short time, and our new Classroom Management Help Forum (click to visit) and Live Expert Help areas at our web site (click to visit) are being inundated with requests for aid for just a single problem area. Frankly, we are very concerned to be getting so many requests for help with students who are verbally abusing, defying or hitting their teacher. Yes, that sentence included the phrase "hitting their teacher."

Even though you may not want to hear this, if you don't have basic, mental health-based, violence prevention training, you are at risk of facing a serious violent act, potentially, even something like the recent school shootings. If you have been to one of our workshops (click), or been a careful reader of this magazine, you already know that conventional interventions always fail with the most out-of-control students. If you have ever found that "nothing works" to control some students, that is because standard methods are never effective tools to manage this population.

In the first issues of this magazine, you should have read about how very critical it is to use different strategies with these most out-of-control youth and children. If you don't recognize the term "conduct disorder," click here to re-visit those articles and get at least a portion of those must-have violence basics. The techniques shown below are predicated on you having the basic training on violence prevention that was offered in preceding issues. Those techniques start in the section below.

Self-Control Has No On/Off Button
Extremely aggressive students often claim to have self-control that they are simply choosing not to use. If you have been to one of our workshops, you know that claim is a classic manipulation. Here is an excellent intervention to use in response. When a student says that he does not need to improve his self-control now, that he will just do it later in his "real job," or when he is grown, ask the student how he will get those skills. When the student claims he will just be able to "just do it", ask him to show that ability now. Most students perform quite poorly. Next, ask the student: What will be any different in his "real job" or when he is grown? Your goal is to aid the youngster to realize that he can't instantly develop and use self-control. Teach him that there is no on/off self-control button-- that he needs to learn and practice self-control to have it.

Follow Your Inner Cop
If you understand severely out-of-control youth and children like conduct disorders, you know that they lack a conscience. Yet, a conscience is the most powerful force to help people stay in control. Trevor, a participant in our Portland workshop last week, suggests a method that can help. Trevor teaches conduct disorders to have an "Inner Cop" or else face the consequences instigated by an "Outer Cop." This device won't compensate for the lack of a conscience but can provide a substitute, internal mechanism that helps.

Meet the Tantrumming Hair Dresser
Relate self-control problems to students' goals. Use some of our popular multiple choice quizzes, with questions like this one from our
Temper and Tantrum Tamer book (click to view): Kwan Lee tantrums when mad. She wants to be a hair dresser. She'll discover that when she screams and turns red with rage, a) Customers don't even notice b) Customers walk out really fast c) Customers will come from all over the region to have their hair cut and styled by the tantrumming hair dresser.

Thinking is Highly Over-Rated
Construct a red stop sign and mount it on a ruler, but instead of just having the word "Stop" on the sign, put "Stop and Think." Drill students on managing their reactions to anger-provoking and potentially violent situations by role- playing. Use the "Stop and Think" sign to freeze the action so you can cue the student on behaviors to use or avoid. Use this device to confront the classic manipulation severely misbehaved students offer: "I didn't have time to think."

Jocks in Jail
Ask the students to play "Jocks in Jail," and consider what has happened recently to famous athletes who thought they could act however they wanted. The goal is to help severely misbehaved students understand that they may face huge consequences for misbehavior. Since these youngsters lack a conscience, it is critical to use methods like this device that offers external control to compensate for the lack of internal self-regulation.

In our workshops, in our email, and on the phone, we have been hearing the same complaint over and over and over: "I can't scream loud enough and long enough to control my class." In the nearly 20 years that Youth Change has been a national resource for teachers and counselors with troubled students, we have never been so inundated with inquiries about how to scream louder and longer to get back in control.

What would you think if your son or daughter's teacher managed by screaming? You would be appalled and demand the screaming stop. If you are one of the professionals who is screaming at kids, you need to remember that you are screaming at someone's son, someone's daughter. If you wouldn't want your offspring to be yelled at, then you shouldn't be yelling at someone else's children.

My name is Ruth Wells, and I am the author of this magazine. When my daughter Meagan was told by her middle school music teacher that Meg was "a loser" and would be "a failure in high school," I confronted the teacher. The teacher replied "Meagan can take it." It doesn't matter if students "can take it." Screaming at students is abuse, and abuse can cost you your job, your self-respect, and your career. Even more importantly, no student should have to "take it." Think about this next sentence: You have no way of knowing if you are screaming at a child who was beaten or incested last night. Now, how do you feel about the screaming?

Yelling is destructive and always inappropriate-- unless you are yelling "Go Team" at a football game, or screaming "Stop" because a student is about to run in front of a bus. Further, yelling is not acceptable in most work settings, and have you ever noticed that when you yell at students, you are using behaviors that you won't permit them to use? Ultimately, your job is to prepare students for the real work place-- and screaming isn't permitted there. One more point: You have an obligation to report screaming if you hear it. There aren't exceptions given if it will be difficult or uncomfortable to report. Your first obligation is to your students not your comfort. Finally, yelling doesn't work anyway. With that in mind, please consider these alternatives to screaming:

Anticipate and Avoid Predictable Problems
Many of the professionals who have been contacting us to say that screaming isn't working, have noted that they are struggling with the same misbehavior over and over and over. If you know that students predictably struggle in a given area, then use that information to prevent it from repeating endlessly. That is how you would manage a chronic academic concern, and that is how you must manage behavioral problems.

Example Strategy:
Instead of continuing to have problems with inappropriate items coming into your site, train
behavior intervention poster your students on what to bring and wear. If you use humor, students may actually absorb far more information. A non-confrontational approach will also result in much more success than an antagonistic one. That is why this type of intervention can succeed when screaming has failed. Here's a very fun intervention to use. Have students name occupations, then list those jobs in a column on the board, Next, have student list items that shouldn't come to work for those particular jobs. Encourage humorous contributions like a chef bringing worms to work at a restaurant. Now that students are relaxed and at ease, discuss silly items not to bring to your site, and the results that can occur. Students can make a master list of Items Not to Bring to School. Our Poster #62, (shown at left, click to enlarge) provides a visual example if you need ideas to get your group started.

Identify, Prioritize Then Teach Missing Skills
You would never yell at a student who lacked math skills. Yelling would not help the youngster gain math skills. Similarly, yelling at students who lack specific classroom behavior skills will not help youngsters gain those missing skills. In place of yelling, consider teaching the missing skills. Where to start? Pick the one problem that interferes the most with your classroom management. Once that skill is mastered, move onto the next missing skill, and so on.

Example Strategy:
Teach students how to properly manage transition times. For example, perhaps students need to rehearse walking into the room without sounding like a herd of buffalo. Once they can enter "quieter than a herd of buffalo," you can tell them that they've mastered the skill. Next, offer occasional rewards for good transitioning, especially for punctuality and quickly quieting down. Teachers can give the first five students who are quiet and ready to work, passes to get out of class a few minutes early. A counselor can bring a pack of gum and give the five sticks out to the first five youngsters who are quiet and ready to work. Be sure to teach the skills before expecting them though, and remember, re-stating the rules isn't teaching skills.

The Most Important, Fastest Fix
Teacher and counselor training still tends to be heavily theoretical instead of practical, and still tends to prepare professionals to work with compliant, willing students. You may find yourself with few compliant and willing, and many non-compliant and unwilling. Your training hasn't given you tools for the non-compliant and unwilling. You need to update your skills to equip you to work with extremely acting-out youngsters, especially conduct disorders. Until you do, nothing-- that's right-- nothing will substitute, especially not yelling. Conduct disorders are cagey, manipulative, smart, and devoted to playing you. When you yell, they feel like they own you, that they are the boss of you. When you yell at conduct disorders, you have made a bad situation far worse. We get many effusive emails and letters from teachers, vice-principals, counselors, and social workers saying that learning about conduct disorders "opened their eyes," to quote one principal. If you truly want the problems to stop, learn about your most misbehaved students, your conduct disorders. Two follow-up links are provided in the next paragraph.

Example Strategy:
Conduct disorders care about only one thing. Do you know what it is? If you don't, classroom and group management will remain enormously problematic. They care about only Me-Me-Me-Me. Every intervention you use with a conduct disorder must center on what the student loses by misbehavior or gains by good behavior. Do not heed advice that others may give that you should just ignore this most unmanageable of all youngsters. Conduct disorders need you to be their "brakes". When you abandon or can't play that role, that student has all the control of a speeding car with no way to stop. Yelling at this youngster has the same results as yelling at a speeding car. Upgrading your skills doesn't have to be time-consuming or hard. Here are two links to begin the process of
learning to control uncontrollable students. Click here for an introductory article and here for more complete help. We can also provide help to youth professionals who contact us at 1-800-545-5736, or you can email us.

We've been hard at work devising attention-grabbing, unexpected strategies for all the "kid problems" you're dealing with. Most of these decidedly different, potent, new methods have been turned into posters. We've actually added a whopping 100 new posters (click here to view). If you are planning on coming to one of our Fall 2007 workshops in Portland, St. Louis, Austin, or Phoenix, you can count on these lively, unorthodox ideas being included in the 200 strategies we give in each inservice. By the way, we even still have some of our half-price work study slots open for these workshops, so call 1-800-545-5736 now if you want to grab one. But, you don't have to wait for our workshop dates to arrive. Some of our provocative, new interventions are right here in this newsletter, and ready for our subscribers to use today.

Fire Up Students' Interest in Finishing School

Subscribers:

behavior intervention poster This intervention is both a handout and a poster. Click here to enlarge the picture. The text says: "Graduates are often the first hired and last fired. Everyone else? Last hired and first fired. Graduates often send the layoff notices that everyone else opens." You can see this device is quite the eye-opener. To use this device, ask your class to discuss the text.

You can purchase this item as a wall poster (Poster #43) by clicking here but subscribers can also get this item free as a full color handout. To get this handout completely free, we ask you to first share our site with two colleagues by clicking here. After you share our site, click here to send us an email requesting this device as a free handout. Your email must reach us by 9-24-07. This handout isn't available for sale yet so only subscribers can get it and use it now. Everyone else has to wait for the handout or settle for the poster-size version.

Good Pay to Ruin Our Day: An Intervention
for Bullies

behavior intervention poster This intervention is taken from Poster #90. You can click here to enlarge the picture, or read most of the text here. You don't need to buy the poster to use this intervention. The poster appears to be a Help Wanted classified ad. The text: "Big Bonus for Big Bullies. Urgently need experienced bully. Must not be team player. Must be able to push around both co-workers and customers. If you are a big bully who can create hostility in any setting, we offer you good pay to ruin our day. Big bonus if you can create big rifts on all our shifts."

The humor in this device will help you reach more students, compared to more conventional, straight-forward approaches. You can have your group discuss the text, or ask them to write similar Help Wanted ads for bullies too, then discuss their creations. Whether your bullies reveal it or not, you may have gotten them concerned about exactly where will their bullying skills be needed.

We'll Give You This Intervention When We're Un-Procrastinated

behavior intervention poster This new strategy is taken from Poster #74, but you don't need to buy the poster to use this intervention. You can click here to enlarge the picture to see it better, or read the text here: "Procrastination Never Accomplished Anything: Start Now You'll Feel Better."

Write the text on your board then ask your students to talk about the "most procrastinated" they've ever been. It may not be grammatically correct, but the phrase will elicit big smiles and better participation from your youngsters. After students divulge their worst incidents of procrastination, have them discuss how good they felt when they finally completed the chore they'd evaded. Summarize that discussion by noting that "Anti-crastinating feels good," using a silly, made-up term that may stick with students. You can also help students discover how to stay "un-procrastinated."

Silly Boys! Interventions are for Girls

behavior intervention poster This intervention is taken from Poster #80, but you don't need to buy the poster to use the intervention. You can click here to enlarge the picture, or read the text here. We often use one-gender-fits-all interventions with students, but one-gender-fits-all approaches may fit no one. Instead of interventions trickled down or adapted from boys, we've got methods especially designed to meet the special needs of girls and young women. This poster is perfect for P.E. teachers and others who want to encourage girls to be more enthusiastic and committed to fitness. The poster says "Silly Boys! Sports are for Girls!"

Ask your girls to identify other ways to complete the sentence, "Silly Boys! ____ is for Girls," then discuss their contributions. Alternatively, ask your girls to make posters using the sentence.

How bad has it gotten for teachers? Students are now referring their beleaguered teachers to our web site for help. Here is just one of the recent referrals that arrived at the end of the 2007 school year, and definitely grabbed our attention.

Mr. Alan, I am sending you this because of all those troubled kids in the class. I hope it will help you,
at least next year.

--Katie M.

This new school year just doesn't have to be as tough as it was this past year. Remember when you used to love teaching, when you felt so privileged to shape the lives of students? That feeling may have been lost many semesters ago.

If you are facing the start of the new school year with dread, we can help. Most teacher training is dominated by content, testing and theory. Most teacher training doesn't actually show teachers how to manage the huge coping, social, and behavior problems that come in each day with students. Contemporary teachers need to know how to actually train kids to be prepared students who have all the school, coping, and social skills needed to function in a school setting.

         Article continues below...

Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Youth
VIDEO WORKSHOP CLOSEOUT
Now $75
Regularly $189
While Supplies Last

Includes 100s of interventions, 100s of reproducible behavior change handouts, 10 Free CEUs & Optional Grad Credit $43. Details at bottom of page.

Be sure to note that training kids to be students is very different than stating the rules, setting consequences, or modeling. Training kids to be students means teaching specific skills like attendance, how to participate in discussions, respect for teachers, completing work, walking down the aisle, sitting at a desk, raising your hand, asking for help, and so on. Our resources show you exactly how to teach those nuts-and-bolts skills, and can make your new school year your best school year. You might even start liking your job again. Here is a peek at just a few of our thousands of methods that train kids to have school, coping and social skills.

Teach School Skills like Attendance
Example Strategy:
Hospital Closed: Doctor Has Hair Emergency
Have students name silly reasons to miss school, such as "I'm having a bad hair day." List students' responses on the board. Next, ask students what would happen if employees like surgeons, air traffic controllers, plumbers, police officers, and chefs failed to show up for such silly reasons. Encourage the students to respond humorously by crafting the "Closed" sign that might have to be placed on each work place door-- see the title of this intervention (above) as an example. Also, help your youngsters to notice that employees often perform critical functions that shouldn't be missed for paltry reasons. Assist students to realize that school is as critical for them as work is for a surgeon or air traffic controller.

Teach School Skills like Motivation
Example Strategy:
Big Brain Beats Big Brawn
Many youth say that school is a waste, that they know many people who have survived without education and skills. But many of those people won't be going as far into our new, high tech millennium as your students. Show them they'll need education and skills to survive. At the start of the 20th century, 80% of jobs were manual labor. At the start of the 21st century, an amazingly tiny 15% of jobs are manual labor. A strong back has been replaced by brains and fingertips.

Must-Have Violence Prevention Methods

violence prevention book

with any purchase over $50

Book regularly $15. Must note "Subscriber Book Free with $50 Purchase" when first order or register, not later. eBooks are excluded. Can't combine with other offers. Must spend $50 before tax, shipping. Not valid at workshop. No exceptions. Expires 8-13-07.

Teach School Skills like Work Acceptance
Example Strategy:
Class Work Today = Job Work Tomorrow
Ask students to name all the jobs and businesses that allow employees to just say "no" whenever they want. There are no jobs like that. To prepare students to be employees, teach them how to respond to teacher assignments so they will be ready to respond to employer assignments. Have students develop a sentence that avoids the word "no," and uses the word "yes" as part of the response. Example: "Yes, but I don't know how to do that." Your goal is to have students view class work not as arbitrary, but as essential preparation for the employer assignments they will be receiving. As much as possible, put all aspects of class assignments in the context of job assignments. It makes school work suddenly more relevant, maybe even critical.

Teach School Skills like Motivation
Example Strategy:
You'll Be Wiser if You Speak Cyber
High tech tools are absolutely essential to functioning in our contemporary time no matter what your job or lifestyle. In just 5 years, most bills may come via e-mail. Test your students' readiness to survive on our High Tech Planet by having them define these terms: Firewall, Secure, Virus, Phishing, Spam, ISP.

Like these methods to build a better school year?
We have thousands more. Click on the books shown at left, or here for more innovative school skills/classroom management interventions.

"We were on a collision course with disaster."

That phrase has started showing up a lot on our workshop evaluations lately. That phrase is also being used a lot by participants during workshop sessions. The recent school shooting seems to have crystallized many school staff's concern that their site could face a tragedy.

Educators are offered so little basic mental health training to help them understand deeply troubled students. When a school shooter does not fit the profile of a consistently aggressive, acting-out student, it can seem confusing. In the recent incident, the shooter did not fit that classic profile of someone who was routinely assaultive, bullying, or verbally abusive. Nor was this student someone who was being constantly bullied or tormented, another stereotype of shooters often offered in the media. Human beings are more complex than either of these two options. Educators are often more accustomed to preventing and addressing violence from acting-out youth, and may feel far less prepared to prevent or address violence from other types of youth. We have gotten quite a few calls and emails asking for help.

Here are some of the questions we have been receiving at our office and at our workshops around the country. We're providing this information to you now in the hopes that it will help non-mental health workers compensate a bit for any deficiencies in their mental health training. However, this article isn't the full training you need on this topic. You're urged to fully update your skills by learning much more than the headlines provided below. We also encourage you to pass on this issue to colleagues. If you want to attend one of our workshops so you get a complete understanding of potentially violent youngsters, note that we always offer half-price work-study slots at each workshop so nearly anyone can afford to come. As possible, we also provide our books on violence at greatly reduced prices to school and agency staff who have little budget but still need resources. If you do need assistance locating or getting resources, reply to this email or contact us using one of the methods shown at the bottom of this page. We're here to help.

Question: Why are some depressed, withdrawn kids becoming suddenly violent?

Answer: Perhaps some of these kids are like pressure cookers that build up so much steam that they literally explode. Many professionals are used to seeing serious youth depression that includes withdrawal, lethargy, reduced verbiage, reduced activity levels, self-harm and/or threats of self-harm, and comments reflecting hopelessness and despair. But, some depressed youngsters may explode out of that "acting-in" into serious acting-out. Note that the depressed youngster can explode due to bullying, but it is critical that you realize that he can explode over anything at all, not just bullying. We recommend that you watch for depressed students not just bullied students. Bullying does not have to occur to prompt a tragedy.

Question: Our staff has training on preventing and managing violence by acting-out students like conduct disorders. Will those methods work with other types of students like depressed kids?

Answer: No, you must use completely different methods with different types of students, or else you will be completely ineffective. You can't extrapolate your training on conduct disordered youth and have it work with depressed students.

Question: I now understand that the acting-out youngster and depressed youngster have the potential for extreme misconduct. Anyone else I need to know about?

Answer: Absolutely. There is another mental health disorder called "thought disorder." This disorder means that the student's thoughts are disordered. These youngsters may hear voices or have visions that compel them to do bad behavior. Like the other disorders, only a mental health professional can diagnose the problem but anyone can be alert for the disorder and adjusting how they view and work with a youngster who may have the problem. An extreme example of this disorder is John Hinckley. Many clinicians around the country are reporting a big increase in young thought disorders, especially in elementary students.

Question: How does my school or agency know if we are on a collision course with disaster?

Answer: Here is a quick test. Your staff must be able to:
(1) Identify at least three types of students who may be at highest risk of extreme violence. (The three types are named in the preceding questions.) (2) Specify exactly how they must work differently with each type of student as one-size-fits-all methods will fail with all three of these youngsters. If your staff can't answer these two questions, you may have legitimate concern that your site is "on a collision course with disaster." There's no substitute for acquiring a more sophisticated understanding of the different students at risk of extreme violence, and learning which tools to use with each kind.

Question: Some states are considering laws to penalize bullies. Will that reduce extreme violence like shootings?

Answer: Probably not. Depressed students don't necessarily blow up over a single problem like being harassed. Bullying laws will also likely have little or no impact on whether conduct disorders and thought disorders engage in extreme violence.

Question: I am totally confused about thought disorders. What helps?

Answer: The proper medicine taken correctly won't be magic, but the closest thing to it. It's by far the most important tool to help thought disorders. There is no second best option.

Question: Where can I go for more details on the three disorders described here?

Answer: Click this link to read an article with a few more details on all three populations of potential school shooters. Our live, on-site and recorded professional development workshops offer you the complete help you really need. Click here for information on those options.

You probably won't be surprised to learn that one of the hottest topics in our Problem-Student Problem-Solver Workshop staff development sessions (click here for details) is serious concern about the damage caused by high stakes, high stress testing generated by No Child Left Behind.

In many states, as part of the assessment, students write essays. One student in our area wrote his essay about his return to middle school. He'd dropped out due to heartbreaking problems he'd been experiencing at home with his family. The essay was judged unsatisfactory when evaluated for grammar and punctuation. High stakes test essays on subject matter such as family problems, abuse, and sadness have become so common that they now have their own name. They are called Cry for Help essays. Cry for Help essays are commonly flunked in many states around the country. Essays on the death of a parent or the beating of a sibling are all eligible to fail. No special flexibility or acknowledgement is normally offered to address the child's humanity. Our workshop participants understandably wonder if there isn't something wrong with a system that ignores a child's humanity for the sake of sentence structure. They also wonder if a system with so little heart has contributed to the apathy, absenteeism, and discouragement that abound.

Our workshop participants often ask if there are approaches that could work better than what they view as "education at all costs," when students are expected, even pressured to produce regardless of any personal horror that they may be living with. However, remember that high stress testing doesn't just leave challenged kids buckling under the pressure. We hear countless stories of normally unflappable students who face no particular challenges, easily get great grades and test scores, but burst into tears, consumed with worry that they will flunk tests that are still months, even years away. We have hundreds of ways to help you cope more effectively with the destructive impact of high stakes testing; a few of our best ideas are below.

Build Enthusiasm Instead of Pressure
There are plenty of ways to evoke a desire to work hard in school without also generating pressure. Instead of pressuring students to do better on high stakes tests, show how education skills will be needed in the adult world. For example, rather than highlighting that good writing skills will be needed for the statewide essay exam, highlight that the long haul truck driver must be able to write coherent, accurate incident reports in order to be able to get and perform the job. The goal shouldn't be high test scores. The goal should be that students learn what they need to succeed in the adult work place. If that goal is met, it should hopefully be reflected in test scores.

Understand How Much Pain Exists
Non-mental health professionals, like teachers, may be shocked at the surprisingly high numbers of children in pain. The literature suggests that perhaps 10-15% of your students (or their family members) may struggle with substances. Another 10% may be emotionally disturbed, or have family members that are. A whopping 20-30% have sexual abuse or incest in their home or world. At least 10-15% may face verbal, physical or emotional abuse in the home. Even though these numbers don't take into account the overlap across these groups, that's a lot of kids facing a lot of pain. The more you are aware of these youngsters, and adjusting how you teach, the less likely one of your students will feel so utterly alone that they write a Cry for Help essay.

Stop Force-Feeding Distressed Students
So often adults have two viewpoints towards educating youngsters in distress. Some adults say that no matter if the child is being beaten, or goes unfed, or whatever the distress, the child must still complete homework on time, take tests, etc. Even though testing leaves little room for humanity, taking this stance can heap so more misery on the shoulders of deeply troubled students. You could call this "force-fed education" as you are literally forcing information into a youngster who may be in pieces. Other professionals take the opposite tact and say they don't want to add to the child's problems so they won't expect much from them. Sadly, this means the child may not get the education they still need. Instead of these extremes, find the balance between these viewpoints: Never abandon your mission, but don't accomplish it all costs. Strive to have distressed children work as hard as they can on days they're able. Is it ethical-- or useful-- to ask for more than that, anyway?

Teach School Skills Before Expecting Them
We don't formally train youth to be students. Very few schools have a formal, written-down plan to teach attendance, punctuality, motivation, test-taking, homework management, discussion skills, how to focus, etc. If these nuts-and-bolts skills were systematically taught instead of just being expected, more kids might learn more, and yes, test scores could be enhanced. Just teaching a single one of these skills before expecting it-- say, attendance, for example-- could ramp up testing results because you are teaching to students who are more often present. Imagine the results you could get if you taught all the skills students need to benefit from school instead of expecting skills no one has taught them.

Train Kids to Manage Anxiety and Problems
We also don't teach students how to manage big problems from home, and anxiety about tests and school. Learning problem management and how to overcome anxiety will be skills a child will need for an entire lifetime, and yes, could enhance test scores. The March 2007 issue of this magazine had lots of great strategies for that. Click here to view those anxiety-reducers.

Do you know a Nix-Master? Sure you do. It's the child who says "no" to nearly anything. Some of these children are loud and defiant, others are quietly and politely non-compliant. Whether they are loud or quiet, they are not doing what they are asked to do.

No adult ever won a power struggle with a child, and no adult ever will. The minute you get into power struggle with a child, you've already lost. Instead, choose interventions that work around the resistance.

Nearly nonstop nay-saying is a normal part of development that prepares teens to become independent. Here are techniques to use with youth or children who evidence normal non-compliance, and those who use behaviors that go well beyond "typical" into seriously defiant. We hope you enjoy this sampling of our innovative methods to fix the nix-master to say "yes" faster.

Be Democratic
Who would you work harder for-- the boss who was a dictator or the boss who was a participatory manager? Most of us, whether adults or kids, want to have a say at work or school. Allowing youth input prepares them for the self- management they must do throughout life when adults aren't present.

Strategies: To win a great prize, have students play Tic Tac Toe without rules. They will discover that games won't work without rules. Now, have a classroom without rules and a defiant youth as teacher. Role reversals offer fast ways for defiant youth to get a jolting look at their own problem behavior.

If Everybody Says "No"
Help students realize that compliance is not arbitrary but essential.

Strategies: Ask the students to determine the consequences if everyone was non-compliant whenever they wished. Ask what would happen if everybody ignored stop signs, took things from you whenever they wanted, blocked traffic, refused to pay taxes, or could enter your house without your okay.

Give a Perspective
Defying authority can become the top issue above all else.

Strategies: Ask students to list the most important things they want in life. Defying authority will not be listed. Identify to defiant students that they devote much time and energy to low/no priority issues while jeopardizing their top goals. Have students cross out goals that defiance could ruin. This intervention is especially good with children such as conduct disorders who only care about what they want for me-me-me.

Different Approaches for Different Folks
You may have noticed two trends among your defiant youth. Some, such as conduct disorders, engage in defiance for fun, or out of meanness. But, others, usually your quieter students, are defiant not for sport or meanness, but out of desperation. You must work with these two populations differently. In past issues, we discussed the special set of tools you must use with conduct disorders. Click here to re-read Issues #2 and #3. If you need more than introductory information, click here to learn about our Conduct Disorders: All the Best Answers for the Worst Kid Problems book (pictured above, and for a limited time, free with your $50 purchase).

For your more vulnerable child who is non-compliant, we have dozens and dozens of methods that we give in our workshop. However, we will have space for just a few below.

Strategies: Your vulnerable students are non-compliant because it's safe and familiar; they do so out of desperation. Teach them alternatives that use acceptance. So, negotiation of expectations with incremental increases can help, but the more you wrestle for compliance, the less you may get, so also be sure to find out why the child says "no." Some children will say "I don't know." Respond to the "I don't know" with "If you did know...what would it be?" and often you will learn key data that will guide you.

Teach compliance skills, including what to say when you don't want to do as directed. Many students say "no" but could learn to say for example, "I don't know how to do what you are asking," which would be a much more conciliatory response. Consider allowing the child to say if it is a "good work day" or a "bad work day" and to get some accommodation on bad days. Any "breathing room" you offer fragile, non-compliant students usually results in their undying loyalty to you, and they'll work as hard as they can on days they are able. If you can strike the balance between your mission and the child's issues that impair functioning, that's the best case scenario. We hope this small sampling of our thousands of interventions for well-intentioned, non-compliant students, will help you avoid power struggles and gain more compliance.

Now, onto this issue's topic...

At our past few Problem-Kid Problem-Solver Workshops, there has been a lot of interest in methods to help work refusers. You may or may not recognize that term, but all teachers and youth professionals have at least several children who refuse assigned tasks. Teachers may have students who routinely refuse all school work. Some students may also refuse to talk or make eye contact. In our workshop, we spend hour after hour on work refusers. During that time, we place a major focus on anxious children and youth. Anxiety can cause or help maintain work refusal in many youngsters, although it would be an oversimplification to imply that all work refusal stems from anxiety. Even though not all work refusal stems from anxiety, in this issue we will only focus on anxious work refusers. If you want suggestions for other types of work refusers, click here to sign up for our workshop, or click here to purchase the DVD or video workshop. The video is being closed out, and for a limited time is just $94 if you order using the link at the bottom of this page.

Here are some interventions that focus on just reducing the anxiety that prompts work refusal in some youngsters. Once the student is less distracted by anxiety, start using our work refusal methods that target the non-compliance directly. The best source to get dozens of those follow-up methods is our live or recorded Problem-Solver Workshop (click for details). The anxiety-reducing devices below will make a great starting point:

Meet Tommy Calmly and Tammy Clammy
All the child knows is that his tummy is queasy, her palms are sweaty, or he has shaky hands. As an adult, you immediately recognize those symptoms as classic signs of anxiety. Plus, as an adult, you know what to do to quell those symptoms a bit. Children often don't recognize the signs of anxiety, and they often don't know what to do about it. Teach children the signs of anxiety and calmness, and how to manage anxiety. Introduce Tommy Calmly and Tammy Clammy, who are two characters who can convey the signs of both calmness and anxiety. Have your youngsters create pictures of Tommy and Tammy, with Tommy Calmly showing what calm looks like, and Tammy Clammy conveying what anxiety look likes. Have your students brainstorm ways for Tammy Clammy to be less anxious. The silly names for the two characters are useful in helping quell nerves; humor is almost always a terrific antidote for anxiety.

Don't Go Crackers Over Nerve-Wrackers
Funny words and phrases are really worth using with highly anxious children and youth, thus the silly phrase above. Ask students to identify their personal "nerve-wrackers," and elicit answers like starting the school year, taking important tests and listening to adults fight. The more children understand what triggers their anxiety, the more they can potentially control it.

Attack the Nerve-Wrackers
Discuss ways to manage those nerve-wrackers that the students listed per the intervention directly above. Anxiety-producing events often generate less anxiety when youngsters have been helped to become "veterans" managing those concerns. It is very hard to sustain anxiety after repeated discussions, role-plays, practice sessions, and so on. Mere exposure can help diminish the intensity of the problematic reaction. It's like fear of flying; you can only sustain intense fear for a limited number of hours. After lots and lots of uneventful hours in an airplane, most people relax at least a little, because almost no one can sustain anxiety endlessly.

Calm or Clammy? Ask Sammy
Young children may have difficulty using verbiage to express, vent or even acknowledge internal chaos. If a child lacks the words to manage or comprehend anxiety, that's a sure way to exacerbate the problem. Give children the vocabulary they need to cope with anxiety. So, for some young children, the word "anxiety" may be a mouthful. Instead, consider substituting the word "clammy," and use a live clam, or the idea of clammy palms as the images to convey the meaning of the term. Because it rhymes with "clammy"c, you may want to focus the discussion on an anxious boy named Sammy. Use the term "calm" as a way to refer to the opposite of anxiety, the goal a child might wish to strive for. The terms "clammy" and "calm" can be also be used with older youngsters too, and will be especially valuable with extremely anxious youth. For older teens, the funny word "clammy" may not be nearly as anxiety-producing as the word "anxiety" will often be. For example, discussing test anxiety can make a teen nervous, but discussing "test clamminess" can elicit smiles and anxiety-reducing giggles.

Be a Mellow Fellow
Here's a very unusual, but effective way to help students ease extreme anxiety. You can use this device with entire groups, or with just a single student at a time. Ask students to stretch out one arm, and to tense that arm as tightly as they can, for as long as they can. It is exhausting to maintain that position for long periods of time so eventually the students will be forced to relax their arms, and to some degree, relax a bit overall. This intervention is also a powerful way to assist children to understand how taxing it is to be very anxious a lot of the time. This device can also be used to show the potential benefits that learning to reduce anxiety can offer.

You may have seen it in the headlines this week: Many new teachers quit during their first three years. In Oregon, where we are based, a whopping one-quarter of beginning teachers don't stay in the field beyond their third year. Many novice teachers cite serious classroom management problems as a reason for leaving the profession. Here is some help for that concern.

You probably have at least one student who is your top classroom management nightmare, and nothing you do seems to help. When you were in college, you got lots of theoretical training, but you probably weren't offered a wide array of practical, targeted tools to manage unmanageable youngsters. The consequence of that is that you may not have been sufficiently trained to manage unmanageable students. The practical tools and information certainly do exist, and have been around for a long time, but are still not routinely offered to educators in college. If you had received your education in counseling, mental health, social work, or psychology, this information would have been offered, and it would have been routinely offered as early as your freshman year in college. Practical information on controlling extremely difficult students is out there, just not necessarily "out there" where everyday teachers can find it.

Mental health professionals often receive extensive training on the different types of out-of-control kids, and how to manage each type. Counselors, social workers and psychologists can name the different types and the methods that must be used with each type of youngster. They know better than to use generic or one-size-fits-all methods with different types of acting-out kids. They know that there is no one approach that will work with a variety of misbehaved youngsters. So, most mental health professionals would never rely on one single management style, like character ed, a point system, or standardized consequences, for example. Unfortunately, because many educators haven't been exposed to practical training on managing unmanageable students, many school districts, schools, and classrooms rely on a single approach for working with all acting-out students. Since one style of intervention will never work with all misbehaved youngsters, it is a course of action that will always fail with some extremely misbehaved students.

If you have come to one of our Problem-Kid Problem-Solver Workshops, --which are coming in the next few weeks to many cities around the U.S., click for details-- , or if you have been a subscriber to this magazine for a while, then hopefully you have learned from us about some of the types of severely acting-out kids. Hopefully, you already know that the most misbehaved student of all is a "conduct disorder." If you have been a workshop participant, or loyal subscriber, you hopefully have learned that conduct disorders (CDs) are a significant part of your population, about 11-14%. You may also remember that while only a mental health professional can diagnose CD, anyone can be concerned that a child may fit that category. Anyone, not just mental health workers, can use the methods that are designed to work with CDs. Here is the big secret to classroom management: If you use conventional, commonplace methods to control CDs, you will find nothing works. You simply can not use ordinary interventions with CDs. Those methods will inevitably fail. If you have had the experience of nothing works to control the student who is your biggest problem in your classroom, this is your explanation for what has happened. You must switch to methods that are designed to work with CDs if you want to get in control of this impossible-to-manage youngster. If you control this child, you will find the rest of classroom management becomes instantly easier because you are now controlling the ringleader.

To give you just a glimpse of why you must use targeted methods with CDs, consider this information: Conduct disorders are "wired" differently than other students. The heart of being a conduct disorder is that there is no heart, no compassion, no remorse. That means that they are not able to care. Because of that, the following interventions will fail: character ed, values clarification, empathy building, second chances, making amends, and more. These approaches are fine for other types of children, but will never be of value with C.D.s. In fact, using these methods with CDs normally makes the situation worse. If you have been using these methods, now you understand why they fail.

You are probably now wondering "So what do I do instead?" It would take a lot of space to answer that question so here are just a couple of key points, although you will need more than just these headlines. First, stop using interventions that require that the child care. Stop saying: "Manual, that makes Joshua feel bad when you slap him." For a C.D., with those words, you just painted a target on Joshua's back. Second, use approaches that are designed to work with children who appear to lack empathy and compassion. There are lots of methods to replace the conventional approaches that fail with C.D.s. Here is just one example of the hundreds of targeted interventions that exist: Make sure that all your communication with the conduct disordered child focuses on the one thing that the CD does care about-- I-Me-I-Me-I-Me. So, you want to keep the costs of misbehavior very high, but "high" must mean what's costly to the child. Don't assume detention, time-out, losing points, or any standard consequence is costly to a child. You have to individualize by learning what this one student cares about. If you focus on anything else, you will be ineffective. Although this is just a single example of how to switch to methods that will be effective with CDs, it is a really critical, central example that should underlie everything you do when interacting with this child.

Now, you have a couple key pointers to help you work with your hardest-to-manage youth. There are so many more methods to use, so to guarantee success, you must more fully update your skills as soon as possible rather than rely on the limited information we have been able to squeeze in here. A couple quick solutions: Come to one of our Spring 2007 workshops (click here), or consider getting our All the Best Answers for the Worst Kid Problems: Anti-Social Youth and Conduct Disorders. First, an update on the massive 18th Birthday Giveaway that we featured in the last issue of this magazine. Yes, there is another 18th birthday goodie in this issue, but you will have to pay attention to find it on this page. If you do find it, you will be treated to amazing 1989 prices for the next two weeks. Needless to say, we were absolutely flooded with requests for the freebies offered in the last issue. We're still working our way through the last requests but have already given out hundreds of The Quickest Kid Fixer-Uppers ebooks (click for details.) If you missed that issue, you can still read it online at our site by clicking here. We really appreciated the sweet comments and wonderful feedback that many of you included with your requests. It means a lot because we do put our heart and soul into helping you help your troubled and challenged students. Now, here's this issue's content...

In almost every workshop that we hold, a participant asks for ideas on how to manage class clowns. You know the youngster. It's the student who may be the next David Letterman or Rosie O'Donnell, but unfortunately, their comedy can seriously deplete your limited contact time. Some youngsters also use humor that would make even Lenny Bruce blush, and you may question whether the contributions count as humor at all.

The sounds that come from your class clowns can "make or break" nearly any class or group activity. Because of this, it is absolutely critical that students be able to manage their verbiage and conduct. Although most schools and agencies want students to consistently manage their verbiage and conduct, very few sites have a formal, written-down plan to teach their youngsters the specific nuts-and-bolts skills that they need to comply. So, self-control skills are expected in most schools and agencies, but not explicitly taught in most schools and agencies. Not surprisingly, students who aren't taught self-control skills, quite often lack those self-control skills.

Here are the initial four skills that your aspiring comedians and "wannabe" talk show hosts need to transform show time into school or work time.

1. FREQUENCY
The class clown may be dominating your group with frequent or constant contributions. It is completely unfair to expect any child to discern the number of times to talk out in your setting, so have your group establish a recommended number of times to speak per hour or class. Until given a quantifiable number of times to speak, many students will be completely unable to discern it. This will be particularly true for children with limited ability to do abstract or complex thinking; who are in crisis or have serious family problems; have disabilities or cultural barriers. If you consult the class on how to manage this issue, you will get considerably more cooperation than if you dictate the procedures to them. To motivate your class clowns to consider the value of moderating the frequency of their contributions, have them list jobs that they may wish to do. Elicit answers from talk show host to truck driver, then ask students to consider what can happen in each type of job, if an employee is dominating the verbiage so much that bosses, customers, guests and other workers can't get a word in edgewise.

2. DURATION
The class clown may also keep going and going and going once started. While you may want students to limit the length of their comments, many sites have no plan to teach that skill. Again, the child is expected to comply with a nebulous standard that may not be readily discernable. Think of all the times that you have listened to an adult drone on endlessly in a meeting. You may be expecting children to use skills that some adults haven't ever mastered. So, be sure to have your group establish a concrete guideline. Use an egg timer, stop watch or wall clock to aid students to become more aware of the duration of their comments. Without your intervention, your most talkative students will talk more and longer, and your quietest students will talk less and less-- exactly the opposite of what you wanted.

3. TIMING
It may seem that your class clowns choose the most inappropriate times to make their contributions. It can take a bit of discretion to know what is the right time to make that comment or joke. You may not be able to teach discretion, but you can provide boundaries that will help. Help students to identify the right and wrong times for these activities. You can have the class members make posters to illustrate the concepts. If your relationship with your class clown has become a battle for control, that is a big part of the problem, and you will need to end the power struggle before you get the improvement you want.

4. CONTENT
Your class clowns may make contributions that are of great concern because the content is wildly inappropriate, a guaranteed source of disruption. Prior to expecting socially acceptable content, you must first teach your students this skill. That is the first of two steps. The second step is to work with the "audience," those students who instantly "lose their grip" when the class clown makes an inappropriate comment. It is important to teach those youngsters to maintain self-control. With less reaction, the class clown will often become less motivated to say inappropriate things. For both of these steps, you can again use potential job choices as a way to illustrate why it is important to choose appropriate content. Discuss what happens when people make inappropriate comments on the job, and what can result when co-workers become involved. Be sure to note how vigorously sexual harassment, bias, and libel laws are being applied in the work place, that it has become quite easy to say something that results in termination, sanctions or legal action.

A DIFFERENT GOAL FOR CLASS CLOWNS
Class clowns are often viewed as a disruption, a threat, a hassle. Here's a completely different outlook for you to consider. If a young person has the poise, spunk and interest in enlivening ordinary activities, that is not necessarily a bad thing. If you can help the child control frequency, duration, timing and content, then that youngster may develop tremendously valuable skills using humor appropriately in the work place.

A Blast From the Future

Ask students to read these headlines from their future birthdays, then discuss if they'll be ready. If you wish, you can use a computer graphics program like Photoshop to alter your local newspaper to actually contain the new date and headline. Include headlines like these:

2011: Mandatory New Test Detects All Substance Use in Job Seekers
2017: Total Automation of Homes Nears: Those With Poor Computer Skills Locked Out
2020: All Jobs Now Require Diploma

Just 'Cuz You Breathe

Have students make posters to illustrate this catch phrase: "Just 'cuz you breathe, doesn't mean you'll receive," then post the posters on the wall and discuss them. If you preface this activity by giving a few stats on the value of a diploma, this activity can focus on graduation. For example, you can tell students that dropouts often earn too little to pay for a new car, an entire house or apartment, utilities, medical care, and transportation. Or, you can just provide the phrase and let students each choose their own focus.

20 Birthdays Later

Ask each students to write you an email as though it was 20 birthdays later. Ask them to describe their lives 2 decades worth of birthdays from today. You may be amazed at the profound content you receive as students describe their imagined lives 20 years away. You may wish to save the letters to return to students years later. The long forgotten letters can become a blast from the past that transforms students in the future, but be sure to also use the letters now to discern the hopes and dreams of youngsters who appear to have no hopes and no dreams. You may want to discuss the emails one-to-one or in groups, and include in the discussion how your site can assist the students to make their hoped-for futures actually happen. You can also save these emails to use whenever a student needs a boost of inspiration.

Can You Read Your Birthday Greetings?

To show students the increasing importance of education in the future, create birthday greetings that might come by email, then ask students to explain the email and say what they would do. To best implement this intervention, create actual emails that you email to students or print out for students to read. Here are two examples to start you off. Although students may not spot it, both of these sample birthday emails are actually scams that could infect their computers, steal their identities, or otherwise do great harm. If students don't spot the scams, you might mention that education could help.

Happy Birthday. Your friends at electostuff.com have a free birthday gift of the latest game console system for you. It's valued at $239 in stores but free for you. Here are some brand new interventions for the brand new year.

Do You Know Where You're Going?

student motivational strategy Give students pictures of a luggage tag. (You can use the one shown if you wish. Just click "Save as" then save it. Next, print it from nearly any word processing or graphics program. You can also alter it using those programs if you wish.) You can cut out the tag to look like an actual luggage tag if you want. Tell students that they are beginning a trip. Tell them that it is a trip through life. Ask students to write down on the luggage tag exactly where they will end up. Many students will insist that they don't know for sure. You can reply "If you don't know where you're going, then you should be sure to take with you everything you could possibly need. Do you agree?" Most students will agree that they should take everything from a bikini to a winter coat so they will be ready to function wherever they arrive. Once students acknowledge the need to take everything they might need, let them expand on their assertions, emphatically noting how vulnerable a person might be without that winter coat or without that passport. Next, write on the board: "Don't Know Where You're Going? Education Will Take You There." (Other options: "Education: Don't Leave Home Without It" and "Education: Will You Have It When You Need It?") Discuss with students if they don't know exactly where they are going, might education be needed when they arrive?

Can You Pay the Cost of Living?

It's expensive just to live. Dropouts and people with less education and skills often earn minimum wage, currently $5.15 per hour in many states. Help your students to do a little math. Based on the current estimated cost of living of $40,000 for an urban family of four, a minimum wage worker must work 150 hours per week-- but there are only 168 hours in a week. That means working all but 2-1/2 hours of every day! If instead, two adults in the family both work at minimum wage, each must work 75 hours a week, or about 11 hours per day, way more than a typical eight hour day. To potently convey the concept to students who think a school day is long, have them imagine going to school from 8 AM to 7 PM seven days a week. This intervention works best if you help your students discover these facts by doing the math with them. Consider adding in this last fact once you have thoroughly discussed this data. Note that the numbers are actually worse than indicated because they do not include the tax burden that shaves about one-third off of take-home pay. That fact offered late in the game can really get students' attention.

The Cost of Staying Alive

This intervention is the perfect follow-up to the preceding strategy. Put this statement on the board, then discuss: The average cost of health care is $300 per month, then it gets expensive. This data is based on a family of four. To adjust this data for smaller families, you can deduct only a small amount-- just 10% per person. Ouch. It can be expensive to just stay alive. Be sure your students discover this.

You May Get a Free eBook

We love getting subscriber and workshop participant suggestions like the one that prompted the topic for this issue. To encourage you to send us more suggestions for issue topics, we will give 5 free ebooks to the 5 subscribers who mail in the best ideas. The winners will get The Quickest Kid Fixer-Uppers, Volume 1 eBook, click here to view this series. Here is a chance to have your ideas used in a future issue, and the chance to receive a completely free ebook. To qualify for a free ebook, you must be a U.S. youth worker. Email your ideas by 1-30-07 by clicking here.

Like Trying to Tame the Ocean

This intervention is for students who attempt the impossible. For example, a youngster can strive to fix their deeply troubled family, or a student may want to undo his family's recent move to a new state. This intervention is to help students to consider letting go of things that they can not change or improve anyway. To use this device, ask the student if they would ever try to control the ocean. The student will say that no one can control the ocean. After you receive that response, you can let the student know that their efforts are the equivalent of trying to tame the ocean of its waves. Instead battling the ocean, encourage young people to ride the waves so they end up in a new and better place.

Where to Keep Your Diploma

This intervention can be used in an off-the-cuff manner, or you can have students make posters to illustrate it. Be sure to put the completed posters on the wall as on-going motivators. The idea is based on the fact that grads earn $329,000 more than dropouts per lifetime. Teach your students-- "Your diploma: So valuable, it belongs in your wallet."

         Article continues here...

No Such Thing Called Regret

There are so many times that youngsters decide to engage in problematic behavior only to then later express regret about their decision. Certainly expressions of regret are important, but you may be troubled when the regret appears to be offered as a way to moderate or avoid the normal consequences. Here is a wonderful conversation starter from a practicum student at a girls' residential treatment center. I'll let her explain: "I don't believe in the word regret. It allows you to cover up your choices with that one word. I feel like it allows you to not own up to what you did. If I punch someone in the face, they may hit me back, I regret that I got hit back...You can't have your cake and eat it too."

While this intervention will only work with students who can process abstract information, it can be the start of an intriguing discussion. You may want to have your group advise you on how regret should be considered in decisions to moderate-- or not moderate-- consequences. You can relate this discussion to how the "real world" reacts to expressions of regret. If you decide to incorporate references to some of the recent incidents involving well-publicized celebrity misbehavior, that could draw a broader range of students into the discussion.

Have Happy New School Year

This intervention isn't new but it is such a good intervention that we do like to give it out annually. This device is designed for youth who are negative or discouraged about school. (This device can be altered to work in treatment centers and other settings by simply changing the focus from school to your setting.) Because it is the start of a new year, hold a Happy New School Year party. Don't just have a party; be sure to make new school year resolutions. Have paper ready so the students can write down specific commitments for the new year that they are ready to make. It is very hard to be negative and sour when you are "toasting" your resolutions. To be creative, you can have the students insert the resolutions into balloons, then blow the balloons up and release. (Be sure to be release the balloons indoors or in a way that won't damage the environment.) You can also have students make small wooden boats out of popsicle sticks or wood scraps, then put the resolutions on the boats. Next, release the boats on a lake or other body of water.

"What do I do about students who get depressed around the holidays?" That's the top question we've begun hearing from the participants in our Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshops. We only have a few more presentations of the class this year, but we expect to hear this query a lot at those remaining general sessions. In case you won't be able to join us in Seattle, Phoenix or Austin for those final stops of 2006 (see the full schedule below), here is a peek at some of the interventions that we will be providing at those events to help with that problem.

Holidays Helpers for Depressed Students

The holidays may not be a time of happy celebration for many children and youth. Some face periods of prolonged isolation with family members who will be seriously impaired by alcohol or substance abuse, or consumed with rage or sadness. For other young people, the holidays can mean losing connection with their lifelines, the teachers, counselors, principals and youth workers who are the only sane, sober adults in their world. Other youth return to their families on leave from out of home placements, to find that new and old family problems await. For many children in pain, the holidays expose and exacerbate their wounds and vulnerability. The happy holidays can be an unhappy time of pain and hardship for many youth and children who struggle.

You have probably already noticed the pronounced deterioration that some children and youth show before, during or after the holiday season. Regardless of your role with youth, there may be much you can do to reduce the severity and duration of this predictable reaction. Here is a very brief sampling of some of our methods that you can use to help your children and youth who may find the happy holidays to be anything but happy.
Teach: Kids Can't Solve Family Problems
For children who attempt to regulate problem drinking or to stop family fights, teach them that young people are not equipped to solve serious family problems. The more you can lighten the heavy responsibilities that these children carry, the more you may be able to help lessen the depression, despair or withdrawal that the child experiences. By assisting the youngster to better manage holiday difficulties, you may also notice that the child will not have as many problems returning to their daily routine after the holidays have passed.

Teach: Happy Holidays Aren't Always Happy
Many youngsters believe that the holidays are or should be times of happiness. Teach your youth that the holidays can also be for many people, a time of struggle, and that is normal and understandable for those who face challenges. Assist children who are in families whose difficulties may not ease on one special day, to hold more realistic expectations for what will happen.

Teach: How to Anticipate and Manage Pain
Assist children to anticipate specific family problems, and determine what to do, and what not to do. For example, the child could be concerned about family members yelling, and could be aided to determine that screaming at family members to stop yelling, may just result in more yelling, while leaving the area, might help a bit better. For younger kids, have the kids sort the potential family problems into "Things I Can Change" and "Things I Can't Change."

    Teach: About Courage and Strength
To assist older youth to have a perspective about what they face, consider having them read about the lives of people who have managed to ultimately blossom after a very rough start. Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," Dave Pelzer's, "A Child Called 'It,'" or Mary Karr's "Liar's Club" are three powerful classics to consider if you find them appropriate. The timeless "Diary of Anne Frank" can help instill courage, wisdom and strength in some youth who are struggling. Her descriptions of her holidays in hiding, can convey so much more than mere talking to a child, could ever do.

Helping Others Can Help the Child
To further foster the sense of connection to the community, deter depression via continued activity, and give a deeper perspective, consider asking some youth and children from troubled homes, to give to others. Although it may seem paradoxical to ask youth who struggle, to give to others, the act of giving implies that life must go on despite the struggles. Giving can soothe the child's soul, offer the mind something productive to focus on, and instill a sense of purpose and success in a life that can seem without positive goals and results. Giving can mean making cards for elderly nursing home patients, baking some cookies for the police who work on the holiday, or delivering food baskets to families.

    Teach: About Feeling Management
Children who grow up in troubled homes, often learn little of value about managing anger, depression, sadness and other feelings that can be an unwelcome part of the holidays. Whatever your role is with the child, be sure that the child understands acceptable ways to manage anger, sadness or other emotions. Any emotion that the child doesn't already know how to manage, is likely to be acted out or acted in. That is part of why depression, substance abuse and domestic violence can increase or intensify during the holiday period. You may be able to ease some of this trend by giving your youth and children the tools they need to manage their emotions.

Teach: Connections to Others Can Help
To moderate the general deterioration that children from troubled homes may experience during the holiday season, find a way to maintain contact. Studies show that children who maintain a sense of connection to their community, do better on everything from teen pregnancy rates to graduation rates. Consider giving your students postcards to send to you throughout the holiday vacation. Also, consider mailing cards to students who may urgently need that connection. Younger students can be helped to make calendars to show that the vacation time is passing. Youth of any age can be assisted to locate community youth groups like Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and Boys and Girls Clubs, that continue to provide services throughout the holiday season. If you ever need help helping your troubled youth, remember that Youth Change provides free expert help to youth professionals during the holiday season and all year long. You Can Tailor Nearly Any Intervention
to Fit Nearly Any Age Group

It's a question we get all the time. People are constantly asking if our methods fit the age group they work with. We always give the same answer, that most of our interventions can be easily tailored to fit any age group. We do tend to put what we call a "hook" or "edge" on some interventions. Adding that element can often make the intervention work better with an older student. To use that intervention with younger students, you simply drop out that aspect of the strategy.

When crafting interventions for younger students, we tend to aim for a more gentle approach. Those interventions may look too tame or "too young" for "slicker" older students. To make a more gentle method become more potent with older students, add an edge to it. As you look at the methods below, remember that we don't necessarily intend you to use our approaches "as is." We intend that the intervention is your starting place, and that you always adapt our methods to fit your specific youngsters. To see more methods that were devised especially for older and younger students, but easily adapted for any age group, click here to go to our huge, free Solution Center section of our web site.

That's the bottom line: with just a bit of tailoring on your part, nearly any of our methods can quickly and precisely fit nearly any age group. Please remember that as you look at the interventions below.

To Get & Print the Free Worksheets
Shown in this Issue
You use PDF software all the time. It's the most common way that documents are shared on the internet. The free worksheets in this issue are in that familiar PDF format. Like most people, you almost certainly have Adobe PDF software in your computer. If you do, then getting and printing this issue's handouts will be as simple as a single click. If you click on the free worksheets and there is a problem, that means you are missing the Adobe PDF software. Simply click here to quickly download that software free, then you can get and print the free handouts.

An Intervention for Younger Students

school skill poster

Many younger-- and older-- students want their teacher to immediately provide help the second that help is requested. Like any school behavior skill, you will have to teach youngsters how to properly request , wait for, and accept help. Students sometimes become badly behaved when help is not provided instantly, or the help doesn't instantly solve their dilemma. This handout has just a few words on it so it is great for younger students and poor readers. The picture says it all so that reading and understanding the words becomes less necessary. We suggest you use the handout to start a class discussion about how to wait for and receive help. Notice how the worksheet could also be used with many older students as well.

To get and use this handout, simply click on the picture of the handout, shown above. The full color worksheet should pop up and you can immediately print it. If you use a color printer, it will print in full color just like the picture. If you use a black and white printer, it will look good in black and white too. If you school skill poster love instantly getting handouts, here is how to get more-- including more free samples. These handouts are from our ebooks, which open and print exactly like these samples. A source for worksheets like this is our Behavior Change Handouts: Becoming a Prepared and Motivated Student and Worker book or ebook (pictured at right). If you like getting free worksheets, note that there are quite a few free sample printables from that book on our site's information page for that volume (click here). This particular worksheet is available as Poster 25 (click if you want to view it.)

An Intervention for Older Students

school skill poster

Regardless of the age group you work with, you inevitably work with at least a few rude, disrespectful youngsters. This handout has a definite edge to it. A fun follow-up to a discussion of this handout is to ask your students to name all the jobs and businesses they can do-- and be rude whenever they want. They aren't many jobs like that.

This worksheet is clearly intended for older students, but those of you with younger students can still use the technique but with different content. So, you can still use the idea of a humorous help wanted ad, but use smaller words, and drop out the edginess. You would also first need to teach young students about help wanted ads. So, for younger students you might preface the use of this intervention by first introducing your youngsters to the concept of classified ads. For example, you could start with this ad: "Fire Fighters Needed. Must climb buildings really fast." Once your students have the concept solidified, then you can make humorous classified ads for them, only your ads will not have the edgy humor. You could still use rudeness as the topic, as portrayed in our worksheet, but you could use any topic you wish. Here are some additional variations: Instead of you making an ad for your students, you could create ads collaboratively as a group activity. A variation for students who are older: have students each create ads either individually or in teams. If you want particularly enthusiastic participation, you can even turn this activity into a contest.

Just click on the picture of the handout, shown above, and the worksheet opens, then you can print it. Here is the source for that handout, plus dozens more: disrespect handout This worksheet is taken from the second volume of our Behavior Change Handouts. This volume is called Controlling Myself and My Feelings book or ebook (click here). This worksheet is also available as Poster 37 (click to view it.)
