Many wannabe sports stars truly believe they will never need school or education. They're so certain that they're going to be pro athletes, not much reaches them to convince them otherwise. For years, teachers and others have asked us for interventions that might convince these students that they'll still need school and an education-- whether they become sports stars or not. Here is a brand new device that you can use verbally, or if you grab the intervention from our Facebook page, you can print it as a worksheet or poster. We'll be releasing this intervention as a poster in the next few months, but our Facebook fans get it now. The printable says "Less than one in a million guys get into the NFL. There is that one guy and even he needs a diploma." That's right. NFL players need a high school diploma to get in. Shouldn't your students know that?

For Students Who Say
"I Won't Need School When I'm in the NBA"

wannabe NBA players So many students yearn to get into the NBA, that we couldn't leave out that sport. For years, one of our best-selling posters has been Poster #35, pictured here. You can click to purchase that poster here, or to see it full size. Here is the information shown on that poster; you can use the information verbally: "Only 1 in 150,000 guys gets into the NBA. This is that one guy and even he needs a diploma."

For a follow-up activity, have students research which offers the best odds: Winning the lottery, being struck by lightening, or getting into the NBA. In our workshops (click), we also have strategies for helping students understand that they will need education whether they make it as a sports star or not, but these methods should at least offer you some innovative, compelling strategies to start using today.

Free Student Worksheet
INSPIRE SELF-DESTRUCTIVE STUDENTS

Get This Worksheet at No Charge
inspiration Take these 2 quick steps by 11-15-09:

1) Click here to become a Facebook fan of Youth Change Workshops. inspire students

2) At the top our Facebook fan page (click), you'll see this: "Here's the worksheet you read about in the current issue of the Problem Student Problem-Solver magazine." Click the blue link below that sentence; it says www.youthchg.com.

To get the worksheet without any charge, you must have a Facebook account, or you can open a new account without any fee. It takes about 30 seconds. Start a
Facebook account here.

It can be tough to inspire students who are "anti-self" but this creative intervention can be a good start. The quote on the worksheet has been attributed to the late Les Paul. It says "The same power you have to destroy yourself, you have to save yourself." You can use this device verbally; it can quickly start a productive discussion. You could also enlarge the worksheet into a poster. Here is a wonderful alternative activity: Ask your students to research the life of Les Paul, who overcome many challenges to reach great heights as a musician and inventor.

Free Student Worksheet
INSPIRE UNMOTIVATED STUDENTS

Get This Worksheet at No Charge
inspirational If you followed the 2 quick steps shown directly above, you will also find this no-cost worksheet on our Facebook fan page too. Our fan page also has video tutorials, insider information, event updates, and problem-stopping behavior change tools and information that you won't find anywhere else.

The little thumbnail picture at left does not adequately capture the special graphic effects on this worksheet. As you will see when you go to get this item on our Facebook fan page (click), when shown full-size, the word "DIPLOMA" appears more hidden in the background, creating a bit of a subliminal effect. When students realize that the background also contains the answer, they may have an "Aha!" moment that you might not accomplish with a more straightforward approach.

This intervention hinges on the reality that each degree doubles the dollars that students earn. A high school diploma tends to generate about $329,000 more income for graduates compared to dropouts. This handout highlights that in a very memorable fashion. If you read this worksheet to young students and non-readers, this intervention can work with almost everyone. This device will work best as a worksheet but you can also use the information verbally. If you prefer experiential approaches, use $329,000 in play money to make the activity more vivid.

INSPIRE HONESTY

You are going to love this enjoyable, potent activity that can reduce lying. While this device works with almost any age group, it won't be useful to use with the 11-14% of your class that may be conduct disordered. However, this terrific experiential activity can have a lot of impact on the balance of your students.

To conduct this activity, you need lots of big books, or other heavy objects. Dictionaries work really well. Before starting, remind students of the requirement for you to report any disclosures that include safety concerns. To begin the activity, initiate a discussion of lying. Part way into the discussion, ask for a student to volunteer to help with a demonstration. Select a student who has already revealed a lot of past lies-- but be sure to pick a youngster who revealed lies that are not serious, consequential, or personal. Do not select youngsters who reveal lies that are serious, intimate, or personal. Ask that student to briefly re-state the first lie. As they speak, hand them the first big book. Ask the student to say their second lie, and hand them another book. Continue the process until the student is having great difficulty holding all the books, or until the student drops some books, or the student declines to continue. Discuss with the class how lies weigh you down until they become impossible to carry. Thanks to special ed teacher, Chris Wells for this creative, fun device.

INSPIRE SAD STUDENTS

Students often face struggles that their teachers and counselors can only imagine. Many students don't disclose the nature of their distress, and that makes it very hard to intervene. Here is a powerful intervention that can help you better understand what your students face. If you have non-writers, you can do the writing portion of this activity as each youngster dictates to you. Ask students to capture their year as if they were writing a Twitter tweet, which is just 140 characters. Reducing a year to 140 characters may reveal information that could be more readily hidden in conversation. Once you know more about the child's world view, you will have a better idea how to reach and inspire them.

You can adapt this idea to Facebook by asking students to give a several sentence long status update summarizing their year. You may permit some students to use graphics or music instead of just words. Before using this intervention, be sure to remind students that if they reveal abusive situations, that you are required to take protective action. This intervention is better suited for use by counselors; if you are not a counselor, consult with one before using the device.

Attend Our Workshop Free
We know that the economy is very tough, so we are going to give away 5 no-fee registrations to our Portland, Oregon Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop on October 8-9, 2009. Just click here to email us and we will give away 5 no-charge slots to the first people who email us. You can come one or both days. You can get college credit and clock hours, but your email must reach us by October 7. You can not have initiated a registration with us already as this giveaway is intended for people who wouldn't have been able to attend otherwise; we won't be able to make exceptions. Since this magazine goes all over the world, and not just to the Portland area, your chances of getting a free slot may be very good. If accepted, you'll be asked your name, address, phone number, and to commit to you or a colleague using the slot so it doesn't go to waste. Oregon has 12.2% unemployment and its schools are in a world of pain-- we definitely want these free slots to be used not wasted.

As our world goes more and more high tech, your students need to be ready. There are a lot of fantastic strategies in this issue, and all of them help prepare youngsters to live in a wired, wired world.

Get This Worksheet Free
Take these 2 quick steps by 10-15-09:
teen drivers
1) Click here to follow us on Twitter then Twitter will send us a notice that you're a follower. If you already a follower, you can get the worksheet by just following Step 2, below. poster

2) Next, click here to email us, and that will get our computer to automatically send you this device as a worksheet.

The intervention line, shown in the picture at left is: "Your phone called. It said 'Hang up and drive.'" You can have your students make a poster using this line, or you can just use this device verbally. You could also enlarge the worksheet into a poster. Hopefully, this catchy line will impact your young drivers.

Grades by Facebook
This intervention helps students realize that problematic postings can come back to haunt them forever. Begin by asking students what kind of content is posted on Facebook and other social networking sites. Allow them to note that students sometimes post about partying, substance abuse, personal problems, and so on. Next, ask the group who views the content. Assist students to realize that content may be viewed by colleges and universities, and that some colleges, universities-- and even employers-- are requiring candidates to give them access to all their social networking pages prior to being accepted or hired. Help students to realize that problematic posts can negate the value of good grades when it comes time to be accepted at college, or hired for a job.

Cyber Bullying: Your Anti-Social Network
Write the words "cyber bullying" on the board, and ask students to discuss what the term means. Assist students to identify strategies to cope, reduce, or eliminate the cyber bullying they may experience. For example, students can block bullying "friends" on Facebook. Give this guideline to help students recognize cyber bullying: "When it's no longer social networking but has become anti-social networking, that's cyber bullying, and means it's time to find a new network."

We All Work in a Wired, Wired World
Inform students that nearly all jobs have a high tech component, from clocking in on an electronic time card system, to being operating a PDA, to using a barcode scanner, more and more work increasingly includes technology. Put two columns on the board, then ask students to list jobs not normally associated with high tech. Put their responses in the first column. Next, ask students to name how each low tech job might still require high tech skills. Put their answers in the second column. For example, waitresses may need to use computers and PDAs to key in orders, scan credit cards, and tabulate bills. Assist the class to realize that almost all jobs require tech skills because we are increasingly living in a high tech world.

Dude, What's Your Cyber Q?

Test students' Cyber Q-- "Q" is a shortened version of "IQ"-- by asking them to define high tech terms like these: PDA, Phishing, ISM, MB, pixel, SSL. They will need to know these terms to survive on our high tech planet. (Answers: PDA is Personal Digital Assistant; Phishing means a scammer is "fishing" for your passwords and confidential information; ISM is a high paying job of Information Systems Manager, and he or she oversees computer networks; MB is a unit of measurement that describes the size of a file or data; pixel refers to the composition of things like a photograph or monitor; SSL is short for Secure Socket Layer, and indicates whether a web page has been made secure for credit card transactions and other private activity.

This issue is filled with brand new interventions that you-- our blog subscribers-- are seeing before almost everyone else. Even better, we're giving you a wonderful motivational student printable worksheet when you sign up to follow Youth Change on Twitter. Plus, we have new video tutorials to help you solve student motivation problems before they start-- and it's all in this issue.

It Slices! It Dices! It Graduates!
This intervention can be used in dozens of ways. It's a play on the type of glib, hard-to-forget slogans you hear in infomercials. It's a big hit at our workshops. Our inservice will be in Portland, Oregon on October 8-9, 2009 (click) so you can get more strategies like this one at that conference. If you have a bad budget, you can still attend because our blog subscribers can come for just $84, which is half-price. Click here for details. Here's the strategy-- but remember that you don't have to use this method verbally-- it also works really well as a sign, poster, card, name tag, door hanger, t-shirt, or even as a note on your board. Say: "Ask me how to earn $329,000." (That is how much more students will earn if they get a high school dipoma.)

You Have the Power
Here are some inspiring words to urge your students to finish school. These words could be on a poster on your wall, or they can be used verbally. These words are intended for use with students who are in crisis, using substances, self-destructive, or involved in self-harming behaviors. Say: "The same power that you have to destroy yourself, you have to save yourself." The words are attributed to Les Paul, the legendary musician, who overcame enormous difficulty to reach his dreams. A good follow-up activity: ask students to read about Les Paul's determination.

It's Your Choice: Twice the Pain or Twice the Gain?
Hopefully you've already been teaching your students that being a high school dropout is like starting their race through life miles behind everyone else. As we've told you in past issues of this blog, dropouts are the last hired and the first fired. When economics are rough like right now, dropouts suffer disproportionately. Here is just one example. The higher the education level, the lower the unemployment rate. That may happen because grads have more education and skills to fall back on. How disproportionate does it get? Dropouts' unemployment is about twice that of peers who graduate-- and just one more of a million reasons to finish school.

There's No "Q" in Classroom
This intervention would work best as a poster on your wall. Write "There's no QUIT in this classroom. How can I help you succeed?" Next, dialogue with students about how you can assist them throughout this school year-- even when they feel like quitting because a task is hard, or they are faced with other kinds of problems. This is a perfect intervention for work refusers. Work refusers tend to be a very hot topic in our live workshops. We spend hours on them. If you can't attend a live inservice course with us, hopefully this intervention will help a bit.

A Back-to-School Intervention to Teach
Appropriate Dress
WHAT NEVER TO WEAR TO SCHOOL

Stop hassling with students about their inappropriate attire. Instead of reminding your students about the rules, actually teach them the skills they need to comply with your standards. Ask your class members to generate posters showing What Never to Wear to School, and be sure they include tiny skirts, teeny tank tops, slippers, pajama bottoms, and pants that are way to big. Post their art work on the wall so it becomes a lasting, vivid, concrete reminder of your standards. For the rest of the school year, no student will ever be able to say "But, I didn't know we couldn't wear swim suits to class!" Notice how this intervention can work even when parents don't teach their offspring about appropriate dress for school.

A Back-to-School Intervention to Teach
Discussion Skills
WHAT TO SAY WHEN...

Don't just expect students to figure out the nuances of being in a class discussion-- teach them those skills instead. So, have the students devise responses to situations that they are likely to encounter in classroom discussions. For example, have students identify and memorize what to say when...they don't know what to say; they don't want to participate; they don't understand the question, etc. Post their responses on the wall so students can use the information all year long. You may be surprised how much bad behavior can be avoided using this simple intervention all school year.

A Back-to-School Intervention to Teach
Appreciation for School
FIND OUT NOW WHAT YOU'LL LEARN LATER

Students often see school as a waste of time. Show them that school is actually their key to survival. To potently convey how difficult life will be without an education, give each student a page of text that is written in a foreign language that is unfamiliar. Offer each student a terrific prize for explaining what the page says. This will really motivate your class members to read the document, but of course, none will be able to. Let your students vent about being very frustrated, feeling angry and incapable of completing the task. After the students have finished venting, note that this experience is similar to what life may be like without education.

In our professional development workshops, we always ask participants to identify the top cause of school shootings. Bullying is usually named. There is no doubt that bullying is a huge problem in nearly any setting where children and youth congregate, but you won't be able to stop or moderate bullying by focusing on that issue alone. Yet, often that is what happens. When youth professionals focus solely or primarily on bullying, it may be a bit like seeing the forest but not the trees. Or, perhaps another analogy-- one that might resonate especially well with mental health workers-- is that a primary focus on bullying is a lot like just focusing on an alcoholic's liquor consumption while neglecting to address any factors that caused the excessive drinking in the first place. Here is a completely different way of viewing and addressing bullying, one that you may find far more effective than conventional approaches that focus on the symptom of bullying while overlooking the factors that cause and sustain it. Read on to discover the real truth about bulling.

MYTH
To address bullying, use character education or values clarification approaches.

TRUTH
While character education and values clarification approaches can have merit, as a reader of this internet magazine, hopefully you have learned that these methods always fail with about 11-14% of youngsters. Do you remember the information presented in past issues on this topic? If you have been to our workshop, you definitely should know the truth on this topic, because we devote hours to it during class. As any of our workshop past participants should be able to tell you, character ed and values clarification approaches always fail with conduct disordered youth. These are the students we covered in Issues 2 and 3 of this magazine. As you may recall, these youngsters lack a conscience or remorse, so character ed and values clarification simply won't work since those methods require that the child be able to care and have compassion. Since conduct disorders are the most misbehaved students of all, they are also often your bullies. Now, you know why conventional approaches may have limited success reducing bullying. To get better results, switch to methods designed to work with conduct disorders. To review our introduction to controlling conduct disordered students, covered in Issues 1 and 2 of this internet magazine, click here and here.

MYTH
Bullying is the primary cause of school shootings.

TRUTH
The media loves simple, black and white explanations, and this very simplistic sound bite is just not a very accurate or thorough explanation. While some school shooters were partially motivated by being bullied, to zero in on just the bullying misses the point-- and misses the point on how to prevent an incident. A more accurate way of viewing these youngsters who shoot, is to note that they tend to be clinically depressed, and that in addition to the bullying that they may endure, they are very sad and extremely frustrated. Better than viewing them as worn down by the bullying, it is far more accurate to view them as worn down by many things. Let me explain why this distinction is so important. This distinction is critical because it doesn't require an act of bullying to set this child off. Like a pressure cooker, this student is building up to blow. Certainly bullying could be the thing that causes the blow up, but it could be any event that lights the fuse. When you train your attention on seriously depressed youth (who may be bullied a lot, irregularly, or not at all) you can more readily and precisely identify the youth who could some day explode.

Further, there may be other populations of youth who are statistically far more likely to cause an extremely violent incident. However, if three-- not just one-- types of youngsters are at highest risk of violence, that's a more complicated idea, a complex assertion that the popular media may never fully appreciate and disseminate. Although you won't hear it in the media, the bullied child is probably not the youngster at highest risk of extreme violence. If you want to read introductory information on the
three students who are at highest risk of serious violence, click over to this article on our website. Want more than headlines? Click here to check out our book, All the Best Answers Conduct Disorders and Anti-Social Youth. It is available as a book, ebook or podcast.

MYTH
When teaching bullying prevention, keep the focus on the bullying.

TRUTH
While it is fine to focus directly on the bullying, if you stop there, you may be unhappy with the results. To stick with the analogy used earlier, it is like focusing on the amount of liquor consumed rather than helping the alcoholic to understand why he drinks excessively. In addition to teaching that bullying is wrong, there needs to be a greater focus on teaching the skills youngsters need to behave differently. Further, you need to modify the skills of not just the bully, but also the victims and peers. Typically, we do not necessarily provide specific skill instruction to all three of those groups. The bully needs training to learn new peer interaction skills, but so do the victims and bystanders. If you focus solely on one or two of those groups, you may not get the results you sought. Remember, teaching skills does not mean re-stating expectations or rules. Teaching skills means that you creatively and effectively show students the exact skills that they need to be different. So, for example, you might teach the bully some new "Opening Lines" to use when initiating peer contact, perhaps aiding the youngster to stop threatening, and instead say something less aggressive.

Here are other key areas that are often not taught as part of bullying prevention programs: personal space and distance, interacting with peers who are different, managing hands and other body parts, and how to avoid peer set-ups. There are many more critical skill areas that often are overlooked and left unaddressed, including motivating bullies to stop bullying. All unaddressed areas will be an endless source of bullying problems so be sure you cover it all. Skill training doesn't have to be boring. For example, to motivate bullies to be different, you can use innovative, humorous interventions like our popular bullying prevention posters (click.) Poster #100 is shown above.

It's Spring. That means you may work in The Hormone Zone. Let us help you find a way out. If it is challenging trying to teach and counsel "hormone-poisoned" youth, here are some absolutely terrific interventions to help your teens use their heads instead of their hormones.

On-the-Job Kissy-Face and Coffee Breaks
When kids debate your site's standards regulating romantic contact, inform them that the standards derive from the work world, not your personal preferences. Advise your youngsters that as soon as business work places commonly permit hugging, kissing, etc., you will too. So, in our part of the world, we tell kids that the very instant that our large employers like Nike and Intel, start offering Coffee and Kiss breaks, we'll do it too.

Work a Little, Kiss a Little
Ask students to name all the jobs they can successfully do and gaze longingly into someone's eyes while working; there may be none. Ask your youngsters to guess what happens-- especially in a bad economy-- to people who work a little, kiss a little.

That Other Fire Will Have to Wait
Have your students name the jobs or businesses they may one day wish to do. Ask them to identify the results of kissing, hugging, etc. while working these jobs. For example, what could result from a fire fighter, surgeon or air traffic controller being distracted by romantic activity at work? Have students answer that question humorously by determining what the distracted worker might say when asked to concentrate on work. Elicit silly answers, such as the fire fighter responds with "That other fire will have to wait."

Stop the Affection Connection
girls and boys behavior poster
As you can see pictured at left in Poster #41, you can give a clear name to your expectations for social conduct. Inform students that your site is a "No-Cuddle Zone", and follow through on that standard. That very humorous term will be far more effective than more conventional approaches; students will often begin to use the term themselves. To view or purchase Poster #41 or one of our other PDA (Public Display of Affection) posters, click here.

Teach the Rejection of Affection
Work with both partners who are involved in problematic displays of affection, and give them memorable, crystal-clear standards so that it is hard for students to even begin to claim that they forgot the rules. A very quick, hard-to-forget guideline for social contact at your site: Touch only from the elbows to fingertips, and only after asking.

In Case of Hormone Overdose
Years ago, families reliably taught their offspring what they needed to know about appropriate interpersonal social behavior. Those social skills are not always reliably taught at home any more. You may want to make it your job to teach what the family should have taught. Remember that telling youngsters "what not to do", may not be enough to change the problem social behaviors. Be sure to teach them "what to do" instead. Be sure to cover these social skills that are necessary to stopping public displays of affection: Hand Control, Mouth Control, Distance Control and Clothes Control.

MOTIVATIONAL
PRINTABLE WORKSHEET
Here is a very timely printable worksheet. If there is anything good to come out of the rough economic times, perhaps it is that a diploma is an easier "sell" than ever before. When bosses have 700 applicants for a single job, name one legitimate, legal reason why they would hire a dropout or uneducated person over a high school graduate?

Click here to view and get this printable worksheet without charge. The worksheets is a PDF and you should have no problem opening and printing it. We regret that we can't offer tech assistance for no-fee items so consult your site tech support for help if you have problems. We also sell this item as Poster 149; click to view this worksheet as a poster. The printable shows a laptop screen that says "Will Work for Electricity." The caption says "Meet the Competition. Any job you can do without a diploma, a computer can do better."

Obviously, this printable makes a compelling discussion-starter. For an interesting discussion focus, ask students to name all the problems that human employees can generate that a computer doesn't. For example, computers don't arrive late or take bathroom breaks ever. Make sure that your students notice that computers don't ever make excuses.

The Obama administration has already begun questioning whether contemporary teacher professional development training sufficiently prepares teachers to best educate contemporary students. As one of the nation's premier providers of innovative teacher professional development, we share that concern. At our workshops, teachers often express dismay that their training did not adequately prepare them to win the race for the top. We also hear a lot of comments that educator training prepares teachers for a world where guns meant water pistols and gangs meant West Side Story. Many of our course participants say that conventional teacher training is stuck in the past, with an all-consuming focus on content, testing and theory. Since practical training takes a back seat to the theoretical, many teachers are left feeling unprepared to manage today's students who present significantly greater behavioral, emotional, familial and social problems than youngsters in the past. If teachers can't manage these huge contemporary roadblocks to learning, then training on content, testing and theory is somewhat wasted. A teacher fighting a losing battle to stay in charge of an out-of-control classroom isn't able to effectively teach content-- never mind test students on what they've learned.

Practical answers geared to work with today's students can help. If you have attended our professional development course or closely followed this internet magazine, you may find that you do have the answers you need to win our 21st century race for the top. Here's a quiz to test your readiness for the 21st century classroom.

Questions:

1. Who is the hardest-to-manage, most potentially violent kid, and how must you work with him differently than everybody else?

Bonus Question: If you work with this hard-to-manage child using the same approaches you use with everyone else, what is likely to happen?

2. There may be just 3 major ways that kids can respond to adult directions. Name the 3 ways.

Bonus Question: What is the only effective way to get children to comply with adult directions?

3. Name the student most likely to drop out.

Bonus Question: What other problems will this child quite likely face?

4. Who are the kids at highest risk of extreme violence?

Bonus Question: Why do you work differently with each of these kids?

5. Other than violence prevention, name the single most important school readiness skill to teach to students. (Hint: Most schools don't have a formal plan to teach it, but they all require it)

Bonus Question: When is the time to teach this skill?

Answers:
Detailed, follow-up resources follow the Scoring section

1. CONDUCT DISORDERS
"Conduct disorder" is a mental health term that essentially means that the child is sociopathic. A whopping 11-14% of today's students may be conduct disordered vs 2-3% years ago. That means you have at least one or two of these unmanageable youngsters in your classroom. Conduct disorders can be the 1% of students who take 99% of your time. While you can continue to successfully use relationship-based approaches with any other child, these methods inevitably fail with conduct disorders who, by definition, can't relate normally to others. Use yesterday's methods with conduct disorders and you will quickly discover "nothing works."

Bonus Question: If you use conventional relationship-based approaches with conduct disorders, it conveys to them that you do not understand them. It may be close to painting a target on your chest. Actions that are normally appropriate under some circumstances, such as giving one more chance, can be dangerous-- even disastrous-- with conduct disorders. If you do not know this child backwards and forwards, you may lack key tools to ensure your safety and the safety of other children.

2. The child can become OPPOSITIONAL. The child can CAPITULATE if coerced to do so. The child can comply; that's ACCEPTANCE.

Bonus Question: Acceptance is really the only way to gain compliance. Power-struggling with oppositional kids means everyone loses-- especially you-- as no adult ever wins a power struggle with a kid. If you must hassle and harass a kid into capitulating, that is not a positive way of interacting that will work in the "real" world. Plus, imagine the harm you might do hassling a troubled child by coercing compliance from them. Acceptance is the standard that works everywhere and won't damage even a very vulnerable child while gaining their compliance.

The dropout rate for teen moms is the worst for any group of students.

Bonus Question: Teen moms also have the highest risk of poverty of anyone, and have a high need for welfare services. Shouldn't every contemporary teacher know who is the one child at highest risk of dropping out, and be aware of the potential additional litany of woes?

4. CONDUCT DISORDERS, THOUGHT DISORDERS, EXTREMELY DEPRESSED KIDS
Note how this answer is far more sophisticated and complex than the simple sound bites you hear in today's media. If a contemporary teacher doesn't know what these three mental health terms mean, that is a big impediment to ensuring safety.

Bonus Question: Each of these 3 children needs a very different kind of help. For example, the thought-disordered child might be able to benefit tremendously from medication, while there is no medicine for conduct disorders. Here is the bottom line: To best prevent extreme violence with today's students, teachers must understand how to work with different kids very differently.

5. ATTENDANCE
If the student isn't in your classroom, you can't work your magic on them. Every school expects attendance, but while many sanction poor attendance, very few schools routinely teach basic attendance skills to students.

Bonus Question: Start teaching attendance skills on Day 1 of the school year. It's that important.

Using Yesterday's Methods with Today's Kids
So many terrific teachers, principals and counselors are still using old-style interventions with new-style kids. Older methods are often ineffective when used to combat some more modern concerns like gangs, serious substance abuse, extreme violence, apathy, and cyber bullying. Here's a good test to see if you are using an out-of-date method for a youth problem. If the method was invented decades before the problem was, there is likely to be a mismatch. For example, combatting cyber-bullying with character ed may produce inferior results. Switching to more updated, lively, compelling contemporary approaches can enhance your results combatting contemporary problems. To use apathy as an example, relying on an old-style approach like mere words to combat apathy is often insufficient. Using methods from the 1950s to combat 21st century problems is the equivalent of using a record player instead of an iPod. You can certainly hear current songs on a record player but is the best, most reliable way? Just as record players and iPods exist in different universes, atomic age student intervention methods may not be the best fit for our new millennium.

how to motivate students Here's an example of an eye-catching, cutting-edge method to combat apathy. To view the image, click to enlarge. Contrast this method to mere words, and the difference in potential impact is obvious. This intervention is such a perfect match for these scary economic times. It is also our Poster #43, on sale for half-price, for an amazing $4 (click to buy), but you can just do the intervention pictured on the poster without buying anything. This intervention can also work as a handout.

Relying on Outdated Training
If your training prepared you to work with Beaver Cleaver, but you see Beavis and Butthead every day, you are relying on preparation that was geared for a world that no long exists. Teacher training has been consistently estimated at 80% on content, 20% on human factors. What teacher has ever had a day dominated by content problems? Teachers find their days are dominated by the human factors, things like student work refusal, disrespect, poor motivation, non-compliance, and huge classroom management problems. Yet teacher training continues to address those concerns in a minimal and often theoretical fashion. Teachers and other youth workers who attempt to stretch outmoded training to work with contemporary youth and children often discover that "nothing works". Teachers and other non-mental health staff who lack strong training on child and adolescent mental health often particularly struggle. Here is a quick quiz that can give you an indication of whether you might be using 20th century training with 21st century students.

1. Conduct Disorders are your most misbehaved students. 11-14% of all students fit into this mental health diagnostic category. Ordinary interventions fail to control this hard-to-manage youngster. What do you do instead? Read the answer here.

2. Work Refusers are becoming more common. Why do otherwise compliant, fairly well-behaved students refuse to do their work in school? Read the answer here.

3. Character Ed is a popular method to use to stop bullying but it will always fail with some students because these youngsters can only ever care about Me-Me-Me. Name these students and what to do instead. Read the answer here.

If you don't know the answers to these three questions, you don't have the skills needed to manage three of the most common school problems that exist today. To upgrade your skills, stay a subscriber to this free magazine and over time, we'll do our best to help. Or get all the answers you need right now from our live and DVD workshops, now on sale for half-price (click).

Our Live Expert Help Line (click or call 1-800-545-5736) gets more requests for help with this child than almost any other. Every teacher, every counselor, every social worker, every principal knows students who won't do their work. Some of these work refusers often fail to show up. When they do show up, they often say little, and some may be nearly mute. Some may not even make eye contact, or even look in your direction.

Typically, adults consider two options: pushing the child or backing off. All types of "pushing" can fail, whether rewards, consequences, pressure or logic are used. Backing off can't ever work because if you back off then you're not offering the child an education, or whatever your service is. The world demands skills from every one of us. No exceptions are made for those who endured abuse or neglect, or have a good reason to seize up. We spend hours thoroughly covering work refusers in our workshop, and can't fit all that comprehensive, step-by-step guidance here, but we'll give you some key tips. Consider coming to our workshop if you want more than just the starters offered here. For a brief time, all of our professional development workshops are half off (click for details.) Start reading a few of our best insider tips and tricks for work refusers below.

It's Pain, Not a Game

Many work refusers face enormous challenges from severe family problems like violence or verbal abuse, to challenges like disabilities and emotional disorders. Work refusal can appear to be a game, but especially with victimized youngsters, it's not a game at all. Getting "stuck" is the only way they know to survive. It can keep them safe at home, and that survival mechanism comes in with them every day.

Strategy:
Few kids will ever say "I was beaten last night so math seems irrelevant. Can I skip the exam?" For distressed kids who don't wish to disclose the nature of their distress, simply allow them to say whether it's a "good work day" or "bad work day." How much work could you do after a beating? Deeply appreciative of accommodations, most of these traumatized students will work very hard on the days that they're able to.

You're a Life Line

You may be the only sane, sober adult some students know-- a fact that you may want to keep in mind.

Strategy:
If you're a teacher, then you may live with on-going "testing mania," and other big pressures to produce results at school. It can be hard to remember that humanity is always more important than scores. Forget the humanity, you won't get good scores. Remember the humanity, you'll maximize your humans and their scores.

Tiny Increments

Traumatized kids have so little energy left for school: Surviving the beatings, homelessness, or neglect can demand all the child's resources.

Strategy:
Raise expectations in tiny increments. If a student says your goals are too easy, that's just right. Aim for lots of small successes rather than a big failure followed by seizing up and absences.

Understand: Work Refusal Isn't the Real Problem

Look beyond the work refusal to improve it. Work refusal is almost always a symptom of a bigger problem. It is not the cause. It is not the problem. You can't cure problems by focusing on symptoms, which are merely manifestations of the problem. Symptoms like work refusal are not the cause, they are the result. Focus on just the refusal, you will never get improvement. Focus on the refusal AND the causes, you can get improvement.

Strategy: Ask students why they don't work. When many say "I don't know," reply: "If you did know, what would it be?" This off- beat method can yield important answers. Be ready to arrange help for the serious issues students cite.

Listen for What You Don't Hear

Consider this true story as a way to understand your potential impact on vulnerable children who refuse to work: "Mom hasn't moved in three days. I'm worried," the first grader said when asked why he wouldn't work. Tragically, upon investigation, the boy's Mom had passed without any adult knowing. Looking back, would you want to have taken the time to ask, or would you be satisfied that you had only focused on getting the work done? Playwright Harold Pinter, who died recently, once said "The speech we hear is an indication of that which we don't hear." For shut-down, withdrawn work refusers, it is critical that you listen for "that which we don't hear."
