ON-SITE WORKSHOP INFORMATION

We know our workshop methods work because we've documented the results. Results like this: 10% recidivism on multi-offender teens, 90% on-time class and group attendance, 90% return to school rate for longtime dropouts, 100% employment for older adolescents preparing for independent living. We've even seen school districts win awards after incorporating our methods. We've seen decreases in attendance problems, punctuality problems, detention, expulsion, and in-school suspension. We get calls from staff members with stories of violence avoided because of what they learned in our workshop. We get repeat participants who tell stories of work refusers who now actually show up and complete assignments. We get letters and emails from administrators telling us how our workshop helped shape positive changes in their kids, and even more dramatic changes in staff, who now feel better prepared to effectively work with today's difficult and challenging youth-- proven results we can bring to you.

Proven methods, designed for your setting.
Our methods weren't created in an office but in youth centers, schools, treatment programs and sites just like yours. These approaches will fit perfectly with your existing rules, philosophy, and policies. This is not another trend that will come and go. Instead, this workshop will turn your staff into walking encyclopedias of the newest and best interventions that exist. They will gain a deeper understanding of what makes each youngster "tick", and will discover how to choose the right intervention for the right kid. This workshop takes the guesswork out of youth work, and provides the practical, real-world training that was omitted from your staff's college training. These methods were created in classrooms and offices just like yours so they're designed for your exact setting.

Our presentation is tailored to fit your participants.
Our Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop has been everywhere, from north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska to the southern part of Florida. We've trained youth professionals from Grand Falls Windsor, Newfoundland, Canada to southern Texas border towns. We've trained everyone and anyone who works with troubled and challenged youth and children: from Orange County, Florida teachers to Marion County, Oregon juvenile detention workers; from El Paso, Texas Headstart teachers to New York social workers; from Oklahoma Job Corps trainers to New Orleans charter school teachers. On-site workshops have been sponsored by schools, agencies, conferences, associations, and universities. No matter where you are, or who you are, if you want the most effective methods to turnaround difficult and troubled youth and children, you've found your best solution.

Keynotes, workshops, and breakouts for conferences
We can't promise tears, but our keynote is just that good. So good, that some of your listeners will be moved to tears. Whether used as a rousing opening keynote address or unforgettable, closing send-off, our keynote speaker will grab your participants' attention and give them a conference experience they won't soon forget. Our workshop and customized breakout sessions will be top-rated by your participants who are tired of more theory, and grateful for practical, no-nonsense behavior interventions that actually work. Finally, a refreshing, lively change of pace for your conference, a change that can yield big results for problem and troubled kids.

For more information on breakout sessions go to our Conference Breakout Workshop page. It has a list of our many breakout workshop topics. Click here and a new window will open.

On-site sessions have been held throughout N. America.
We've trained conferences like the Texas Alcohol and Drug Counselor Conference (TACADA), Louisiana Families in Need Conference, Iowa Family and Children Coalition, WAVE Youth Professionals Conference, Rochester Alliance for Mental Health Conference, California Court School Educators Conference, California Counseling and Development (CACD) Conference, Oregon Alternative Ed Conference, WA Primary Intervention (PIP) Conference, and the Alliance For Excellence Conference.

We've trained all kinds of schools and agencies from Forks, WA to Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. We've trained Job Corps, Civilian Conservation Corps, juvenile courts, day treatment centers, counseling centers, foster parent programs, group home programs, special ed sites and juvenile justice programs. Recent trainings include Waveland-Bay St. Louis, MS School District; Education Service Ctr. 4, Houston, TX; Maple Lane Juvenile Detention School, Centralia, WA; Tongue Point Job Corps, Astoria, OR; Northside ISD, San Antonio, TX; Boise ID School District; Jefferson County School Counselor Association; Volunteers of America, Portland, OR; PACE Center for Girls, Tallahassee, FL; Ferry Co. Community Services, Republic, WA; and the Youth Development Institute, Minneapolis, MN.

We can even provide the names of past Canadian sessions and participants. We've trained Canadians from Moncton, NB to to Grand Falls-Windsor, NL to Vancouver, BC We get an especially rousing response from Canadian participants who seem convinced that the course was crafted especially for Canadian kids. The class can be an especially successful fund-raiser in Canada as we don't host Canadian sessions ourselves. When you host a class in Canada, and open it to area youth professionals, it can draw a big crowd of people who otherwise would have to travel far south into the U.S. to attend. Request an on-site information packet via e-mail, or call 1-800-545-5736, which is an easy toll-free call from Canada.

This professional development workshop delivers what it promises to teachers, counselors, juvenile corrections workers, school safety police, social workers, and foster parents: Ready-to-use, "must have" tools-- even for extreme violence. We give you the 3 types of kids at highest risk of extreme violence like school shootings, then show you how to intervene completely differently with each type. We give preventive strategies that every contemporary youth professional must have in these turbulent times. This is the one training workshop that actually delivers exactly what it promises.

We cover any problem that you request-- even the most serious problems, everything from extreme violence to serious family problems to delinquency to withdrawal to child abuse and self-harm. We'll even provide the "must-have" safety tools you need to understand and intervene with today's severely disturbed and distressed youth. These are real-world answers that you probably didn't learn in college, but need right away to safely do your job.

This continuing ed workshop delivers the newest and best answers, methods that you can use right away. WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

"I learned more in two days than in 4 years of college"
Stuart Swenson, Director, Arlington TX Youth Services

"I just want to say how much I learned in the seminar. Ironically, as I was sitting in the seminar, a threat of violence was written on the wall at the high school. I know from the previous seminar I attended by you, that I would have been able to identify suspect students fairly easily...I want to thank Ruth Wells and Youth Change for giving me these tools." Lisa Chreten, Teacher, Oregon

All comments are quoted from unsolicited letters and workshop evaluations sent to us by on-site workshop sponsors and course participants. We can send you copies of the entire letters and complete evaluations upon request.

"4 years ago I took a group of teachers to your workshop. It changed my life. I gained a new understanding of the students I work with and now share your strategies as part of my new teacher training each year. Your workshop ranks as my number one ever in all my years of education." Kristie McCuston, Vice Principal, Garland, TX

"I have a better understanding of non-compliant behaviors. Now that I realize that it's not a choice they make, I can adjust my reaction to them-- and diffuse them to get more positive results." Leslie Kill, Teacher, Jackson Junior High School, Sundusky, Ohio.

"Thank for presenting at our annual conference. We thought you might enjoy some of the written comments as reflected in the evaluations: 'Very well done,' 'Good ideas,' 'Speaker was wonderful.'" Maria Campisteguy, Executive Director, Council for Hispanic Advancement, Oregon

"I attended a workshop led by Ruth Wells several years ago in Columbus. It was one of the best I ever attended." Cindy Morehead, School Counselor, Zanesville, Ohio

"Really enjoyed the conference where Ruth Wells spoke. I could have listened to her speak for a week..." Katie Riddle, Group Leader, Clarinda Academy, Clarinda, IA

"Everyone without exception, gave high marks to your training. Everyone came up and thanked us and talked about finally having someone help them figure out what to do with some of their students." Bernice Cummings, Director, Career Preparation, Job Corps Operations, Georgia

"I want to thank you for the inservice you presented to my staff...I have been told by several staff that it was the best inservice ever." Catherine Brooks, Director of Education, Children's Center, New Haven, CT

"My staff at PACE Center have incorporated your suggested interventions with great success." Neil Kalthenecker, Program Manager, Leon, Florida

"Ruth's workshops normally have standing room only. She always receives outstanding reviews from workshop participants and conference-goers always ask for us to bring her back." Ann Harrmann, Coalition for Family and Children Services, Des Moines, Iowa

"Most interesting, useful workshop I've ever been to." Phyllis Eccles, Special Ed Teacher, Hillsboro, TX

"I want to thank you for doing an excellent job...A number of staff praised the workshop. One, generally critical staff offered it as the best he had heard." Ed Cavaille, Marion County Family Court Alternative Programs, Salem, Oregon

"Incredibly useful. Inspiring." Caryn Curry, Counselor, Lincoln Elementary School, East Chicago, IN

"Instructor stuffed full of practical, immediately useable ideas." Arthur Fox, Whitworth School, Dallas, OR

"Fantastically practical!" John Taracko, Ohio Dept of Youth Justice Services, Columbus, OH

"Absolutely phenomenal! Very useful information." Jami Giammusso, Lead Trainer, WA Learning Disability Association

"Excellent! These techniques will work with even the most difficult students." Chris Adams, Teacher, Lockhart, TX Schools

"Bam! Pow! Instructor hits you right between the eyes with lots of new approaches, ideas and information." Patty Boland, McGrath School, Napa State Hospital, Napa CA.

"I didn't realize how much useful information could be crammed into 2 days." Charles Groemer, Teacher, Bloomington, IN

"Can't wait to share your ideas with our staff. I loved the way you tailored the interventions to the type of student. It was refreshing to finally attend a workshop where the presenter actually presented and didn't fill the workshop with 'touchy feely' activities with little relevance." Sally McAfee, Coordinator of Alternative Education, Corvallis, OR

THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

Q: The Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop looks like exactly what our site needs, but we have no budget. Any ideas?

A: Our workshop may be more affordable than you expect so call us at 1-800-545-5736 and we'll give you an immediate quote. We have quite a few creative ideas to help with budget concerns. We don't just show up and present a workshop. We want to be a resource for you before and after your on-site workshop-- helping manage budget concerns is part of our service.

at risk at risk

First, did you notice that you can host the workshop as a fund raiser? That means that you charge area youth professionals to attend. You can charge any amount you wish, and you keep all the tuition you collect. We have extensive resources to assist you to attract participants and break even, or even make money for your budget. We can't promise you would break even or make some profit, but most groups do. We provide a flyer, mail list, and everything you need to publicize your event, all with no extra charge to you. You also can collaborate with another school or agency to sponsor the course, splitting the fee, then the staffs of both agencies attend. Our fee allows for "any" number of participants so you can involve several agencies or schools if you wish.
There is more information on this option on our site; click here.

A second suggestion: Ask your local ESD, ESC, SERRC, School District, School Corporation, local college or Board of Ed to host the event and allow your staff to attend. You can offer your facility and staff time to coordinate the event in exchange. National and regional conferences are always looking for excellent courses to include, so consider contacting your Counselor Association, Principal Association, Middle School Association, Social Worker Convention, or Child Welfare Convention conference planner to let them know that you want a practical, real-world offering like the Breakthrough Strategies Workshop to be included.

A third idea: Write a grant to get needed funding. The workshop easily fits for most grants that cover drug and alcohol problems, violence, school improvement, classroom management, special ed, and countless other areas because we cover all types of "kid problems."

Fourth, if you are fortunate enough to have a youth worker advocate group like the Indiana Youth Institute, you can ask that group for financial aid. Local, regional and national groups like the Kiwanis, Elks and Lutheran Brotherhood may be willing to assist, and sometimes media outlets and businesses will demonstrate their commitment to the community by sponsoring the event for you. Don't forget your church either. Groups like these have sponsored the course many times all over the country. Usually, we find that hard work and persistence will get you the funds you need to host the class.

Finally, Youth Change is a socially responsible entity. That means we exist for much more than our financial bottom line. Occasionally, we will donate a portion of our fee to groups who want the class but can't quite make it fit the budget. We prefer to make these donations in Oregon, our base, or in nearby Washington State, but will consider other regions as possible. Give us a call at 1-800-545-5736 so we can chat with you about this option and other innovative ways we can help bring our workshop to your front door.

PROBLEM-SOLVER TIP

When many of your staff were originally trained, gangs meant "West Side Story," and guns meant water pistols. Even though your students have changed dramatically in the past few years, youth professional training really hasn't. Most colleges do not offer classes like "Maximum-Strength Motivation-Makers" and "Controlling Uncontrollable Students". Because training hasn't kept up with the changes in kids, many staff may find their job difficult or impossible.

at risk at risk

Targeted, real-world, practical training may be exactly what your team members need to start liking their jobs again, and being as effective as they want to be. If your team members tell you that working with difficult kids is difficult, then consider giving them the new, updated tools they need to successfully teach and counsel contemporary youth. If retaining staff members is tougher than ever, let us help. Updating your team's skills is a far more affordable, positive option than having to hire new staff members. Plus, the benefits that will flow to your students may be immeasurable. Once staff have better tools, your children will instantly benefit. While it's true that frustrated workers can easily go elsewhere, this training can stop the frustration, and help your staff members renew their commitment and passion for working with youth and children. Keep your staff committed, empowered and on board by turbo-charging their skills: bring the Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop to your site. Give your team the new tools they need to successfully work with today's youth.
