school success

This is a rough time for many families. That is why this issue will focus on ideas for helping children who are sad and depressed. Since depression often worsens around holiday time, it is always a good idea to be especially vigilant during November and December. Be sure to carefully watch over any children and teens who show signs of sadness, isolation, withdrawal, distress, or other marked changes in behavior. If you are not a counselor, be sure to seek help if you have any safety concerns about a child or teen; these strategies are not a substitute for that. On a happier note, be sure to grab one of the 5 FREE workshop guest passes worth $169 each, that we are giving out for our approaching 20th birthday. We gave out five slots in the last issue and have five more to give away now. It's fast and easy to get a completely free workshop slot so click here for details.

5 NO-COST WORKSHOP REGISTRATIONS --2 Steps

counselor professional development We're still celebrating our approaching 20th birthday, and want to give away 5 more workshop guest passes (worth $169 each) to our workshops coming to Los Angeles, CA on December 4-5, 2008, and Phoenix, AZ on December 11-12, 2008. To be entered for a no-cost workshop guest pass, it takes TWO quick steps. First, tell a colleague about our website using this link. Second, click here to tell us which city you would like to attend then send us your request. We will randomly select 5 people from all those who enter. We will pick the winners throughout the next few weeks so make sure your request reaches us before December 2, 2008. Note that we also have half-price $84 work study slots still open for these cities. Call 1-800-545-5736 to grab a work study spot before they are taken. You just have to say you want the slot; there is no paperwork or other requirements. You just let us tell you the details in a quick phone call then you'll be all set to get an awesome workshop at bargain basement prices.

Yesterday Once More
When children and youth spend a lot of the present being very upset about problems from the past, ask them to "bloom where you're planted."

Power Walk
Vigorous exercise can have almost a magical effect on depressed children and teens. Studies have consistently shown that exercise is one of the top three things that can help a child or youth stay ahead of depression. Don't forget that if you are not a clinician, be sure to immediately seek mental health guidance if you have any safety concerns about a depressed child. It is always better to play it safe as the severity of a youngster's depression is often not readily apparent.

Power Talk
Talk is the other intervention that studies have shown to be potentially quite useful to help depressed children and adolescents moderate the amount of sadness they are experiencing. We recommend that you combine this intervention with the preceding method-- exercise. For example, you and the student can walk rapidly around your site while the child gets to talk about any issues that may be of concern. You can "Power Talk while you Power Walk". Children who "talk it out", are far less likely to "act it out". They are also less likely to "act it in"-- to hurt themselves with behaviors such as self-harm, self-endangering, substance abuse or other similar self-destructive actions. Depression can be both acted out and acted in. We tend to think of depression as just being acted in, but it can be either.

For Right Now
For children who are sad about things from the past or future, ask them "What's wrong with this moment?" If they say that nothing is wrong right now, then ask them "Why would you waste the present worrying about what's done...or what may never happen?" Assist students to avoid squandering the present moment for a problematic past or potentially problematic future.

Depression Solves What?
For children and adolescents who are often mired in depression, ask them to tell you exactly what depression solves. Assist the students to understand that depression solves nothing, and can make things worse when the child neglects responsibilities or shirks work due to sadness.

Cancel Stinkin' Thinking
Now that you have your students realizing that depression never solves anything, teach them to notice and stop depressing thoughts by thinking "Cancel" whenever they notice negative thinking. You can call the negative thinking "stinkin' thinking." If students protest that they will never be able to turn off all the negative thoughts, reassure them that just noticing the negative thinking is a huge first step. "Sell" the idea of reducing negative thinking by emphasizing that students will be probably more comfortable and experience less pain by simply reducing the amount of negative thoughts.

Take Action
Train depressed students to take an action rather than just wallow in sadness. This intervention is the perfect follow-up to the two approaches shown immediately above.

Depression Time
For students who really hesitate to take steps to stop their negative thoughts, suggest to these youngsters that they simply try to reduce the number of minutes spent on negativity. Next, point out that there will always be plenty of time to be depressed later, that students aren't giving up anything, they can always choose to be sad again later. Alternatively, have students determine how many minutes per day they spend dwelling on sad thoughts, then have them reduce the time by a percentage that is acceptable to them.

FREE HANDOUT --Just 1 Click
Destination Procrastination

free student motivation printable A single click will instantly download this full color handout on procrastination. It's the handout version of Poster #74 (click to view this as a poster) If you work with younger students, you can define "procrastination" as "putting off". To preface a discussion of this handout, you might want to tell your youngsters a personal story about a time you procrastinated-- and the consequences that resulted. For example, vividly capture the sights and smells that you encountered when you put off using up that open can of tuna fish. After the story, students will be much more receptive to information from you because they will perceive you as being just like them, that you sometimes share their difficulties performing tasks promptly.

In between trekking from school to school, conference to conference, and agency to agency all summer, teaching our popular Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop, we've been busy producing knock-your-socks-off, new handouts and posters. Some of these brand new handouts and posters are so new that they aren't even for sale yet on our website, but as a subscriber to this internet magazine, you can have some of these attention-grabbing worksheets now, for free.

Note that the cereal bowl is overflowing with dollar bills. That's because-- as noted on the box-- "Grads Earn Twice as Much." The picture (at left) shows our Poster 132 (click to view) but as a subscriber, you can get this item in handout form free. The handout version of this device leaves a blank spot for you to add students' faces to the cereal box, or students can make this addition on their own.

Teachers continue to face what some call "the perfect storm" (USA Today 08/14/03). Shrinking budgets and mounting state proficiency test requirements for both students and teachers continue to hammer educators. No Child Left Behind has created conditions that many teachers find tough to survive. In Texas, one vice-principal captured the worry by referring to the law as " No Child Left Behind, No Teacher Left Standing."

Throughout summer, we have been trekking from school to school to school teaching our popular Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop at each school as each team's start-of-the-year inservice. We have been doing this every summer for the past 19 years so we know what to expect from school staff who are returning for another year. But, this year is a bit different. Instead of finding tanned, relaxed, ebullient staff, excited to begin another school year, this year, at many schools, we also are seeing more apprehension and cynicism than is customary for those normally halcyon days prior to students returning.

If teachers face greater challenges than ever before, at a time when they are equipped with less resources than ever before, then it becomes crucial to fully use and mine every second of instruction time. However, the typical teacher loses about 22 minutes of every 50 minutes of instruction time to on-demand behavior management. That is time no contemporary teacher can afford to lose. Here are five of our innovative, one-of-a-kind methods to help you create your most productive school year ever-- even though you may face bigger hurdles than ever before.

1. START WITH A BANG TO BUILD A LASTING BOND

TRY THIS HANDOUT FREE!
school success book Especially if you work with students who are utterly sour and negative about teachers, you must establish a positive, powerful presence from the first second of class. Here's a sampling of a wonderful device that you can make-- or order it from us for $15. It's a humorous manual that shows students how to get their teacher to "work right." The full manual is in our book/ebook called A Student's Guide to the Care and Heeding of Teachers. The full manual is in our Last Chance School Success Guide book or instant ebook (click to view), but you can see and print part of the manual here for free (click). If you want the entire manual, order it here (click) or call toll-free to 1-800-545-5736. We suggest that you attach the little manual to a string and dangle it off your sleeve until one of your students asks about it. You can then tell the class that the item is a manual-- like those that come with a new computer or jacket-- and this one shows you how to make your teacher work properly. Our version is extremely funny, noting, for example, that "this teacher does not include optional mind-reading capabilities and cannot magically determine when you need help." The full manual has a reputation for engaging even the most negative youngster, but you don't have to get ours. You can construct your own version and make it say anything you want.

2. ORIENTATION ISN'T ENOUGH-- TEACH SKILLS INSTEAD

Organizations function best when each player has been trained and oriented to understand and meet standards. Note that stating the expectations is seldom sufficient to gain compliance. For example, students who have not been taught adult interaction skills by their parents, may lack the skills to interact properly with their teacher, principal, bus driver, etc. Stating the expectations may do little to teach what words to use, what words to not use, what voice tone, what voice level, how often to be non-compliant, and so on. You can expect whatever you want from students, but if you fail to teach it, it may be an unfair expectation, a lot like expecting students to have reading or math skills without having first taught those skills.

Students will not only lack adult interaction skills, but will need nuts-and-bolts skill training to develop and use appropriate skills for peer interaction, compliance, verbiage, punctuality, attendance, attitude, focusing, and so on. Unless you teach ALL the skills you expect, it's likely that you will continue to lose 22 minutes of each 50 minute period of instruction. By teaching these skills, you can get back all or most of that otherwise lost instruction time.

3. SURVEY YOUR CONSUMERS

People-- both young and old-- absolutely love to have a say in how things are run. Don't you? Want to grab your students' attention from the very start? Want them to view you and the class positively? Want them to feel hopeful and optimistic about what your class will cover this school year? Here is a quick, almost no-fail method: Survey your "consumers" and give them a voice. Include fill-in-the-blank questions like "The one thing I don't like about math is..." and "The one thing I wish teachers would do differently is...." Have young students or non-readers? Read the questions to your students, then have them simply circle happy and sad face icons in place of words to communicate their answers.

4. ATTEND TO THIS FIRST

The time to teach attendance and punctuality is Day 1, Week 1. The minute they arrive is the time to ensure that students keep on arriving. Don't rely on families to teach this. As discussed above, it is not sufficient to orient students by reminding them of the times that they are to arrive. You must teach them EVERYTHING they need to know to meet the expectation. Be sure to include how to wake up, wash up, eat up, dress up, and leave for school. If you expect specific attendance skills, you need to teach those skills first, then expect the skills second.

5. MOTIVATE THE MOTIONLESS

school success book When you were in college, did they offer you course after course on motivating students? Probably not. Could you have used courses like that? Absolutely. Luckily, we have maximum- strength motivation-makers that shock students into realizing that they can't even make it through the morning without education. We cover it all, and so should you! Be sure to cover all the excuses that you hear including, "I'll never need school because...I'll marry a wealthy man...go on welfare... be a rock star...be a sports star...win the lottery...my family will take care of me...the tribe will take care of me..." The fastest way to see our newest, knock-your-socks-off, over-the-top motivators is to look at our posters (click). You don't have to buy anything to use the interventions pictured. For example, you can immediately use the words on Poster 128 (shown above), or quickly make a version for yourself. Click here to view one of our best motivators, Poster 128.

Our Spring '08 workshops were really packed with participants so we read a lot of evaluations. Many of the evaluations from the Spring inservice tour included requests for us to post favorite interventions. We noticed that many workshop participants requested the same handful of interventions. By popular request, we are posting your favorite interventions right here.

# 1 Favorite Intervention
Where Will Your TV Watching Skills Be Needed?

Any intervention that used a classified ad format was very popular. The method listed here was the most popular of the bunch. The intervention is to ask students to write Help Wanted ads based on the set of skills they are acquiring. Many participants liked the examples we gave in class of the ads students create and wanted copies. They like how these silly ads may leave students wondering "Where will my TV watching skills be needed?"

Here are some of the examples that drew the most comment:

Experienced TV Viewers Needed for High Paying Jobs

Large company seeks TV viewers to work long hours in a horizontal position. Must like donuts and chips.

    National Firm Needs Nappers Now

If you like to sleep, this job opportunity will open your eyes. If you wake at the crack of noon, we can wait. On-time applications not accepted.

Mall Rats Wanted for Executive Positions

Years of leaning against the wall or sitting on a bench required for exciting opportunity with major corporation. If you know how to hang out for hours, then your future as one of our hard-driving employees is simply unlimited. If you can demonstrate the ability to say something really nasty about everyone who walks by, then you may be that special person we need in customer relations. Put those valuable years of experience as a mall rat to work with us.

Violent Video Game Pros Needed for Government Espionage

If you can navigate mazes, break codes or kill the beast, then a career with the CIA or FBI may be for you. We need people like you who can get to the highest level no matter what vicious dragons or pre-historic dinosaurs get in the way.

# 2 Favorite Intervention
Gallons for Graduates

Participants really like interventions that sell the value of school, and wanted some more. Here is a new one. Right now it is a particularly easy sell if you relate school to the price of gas. Here is the connection. The typical dropout earns about $500 per month working minimum wage at one or more jobs. With gas currently approaching $4 a gallon, and minimum wage approaching $7 an hour, have students calculate how many hours a dropout must work to buy a tank of gas. To make the numbers come to life, have students determine how long they must work to just drive to a neighboring city, nearby state, or popular regional destination. Have them determine how much they will spend just to go to their job each day.

With gas expected to top $5 a gallon in the near future, be sure to help students discover that one dropout with one job may not be able to afford a tank of gas while also paying housing, medical bills, car payments, clothing, recreation and so on. Help students to discover that if gas prices continue to rise, dropouts may be able to afford a car they can't afford to drive. By contrast, graduates earn roughly twice the salary of dropouts and may be better prepared to stay on the road. You are re-shaping students' image of school by making it critical to being able to afford to drive.

A fun follow-up intervention: have students illustrate the phrase, "Gallons for Graduates." They can use art supplies or computer clip art to create fanciful images like a merged diploma and gas pump, or by showing a gas station where everyone who is buying gas is wearing a cap and gown, or clutching a diploma.

Our Spring workshop participants commented a lot about our interventions for bullies. They liked that our interventions don't rely on remorse or compassion because so many bullies appear to lack those qualities. They appreciated how the interventions were always related to the bully's self-interest, and agreed with what we teach in class, that many bullies only care about I-Me, I-Me, I-Me, and nothing else. On the workshop evaluations, a number of participants asked us to post more examples of relating anti-bullying interventions to the self-interest of the bullies. Here are a couple of posters that illustrate that. They are good examples of how to always be sure that anti-bullying interventions are closely tied to what the student can lose or gain by using bullying behaviors. A lot of the counselors also liked the use of humor when working with bullies. An example of that is shown in the second poster. We do strongly encourage that humor be incorporated in anti-bullying interventions to streamline your interactions and improve your results.

Here are
Posters 71 and 97. You don't need to buy the poster; you can just use the technique pictured. If you do want to buy posters, they're $8 each; click here. If you want additional anti-bullying ideas, we have many more posters that you can view to get innovative methods that you can easily adapt and use; click here. Click on the posters below to enlarge it them for viewing.

Breaking News! All Jobs Now Require a Diploma!

dropout prevention handout poster
This intervention is so surprising that even your co-workers may react with shock. It is such a potent device that it won't just jar your students-- it may grab the attention of anyone who sees it-- even adults. As you can see from the picture at left, the poster proclaims that "All jobs now require a diploma." The small text at the bottom says "Think this poster is scary? Try life without a diploma." The text at the bottom may be small but it may also be haunting. This intervention works as both a handout or wall poster, plus you could use this device verbally.

Many students are quite vocal about not wanting to work in fast food. They may be equally vocal about not wanting to do anything in school. Here is a device that may propel students who disdain a career in fast food, to care a bit more about finishing school. This intervention and the next intervention below, will give you two new tools to transform students' dislike of working in fast food into renewed interest in school. These devices will only work with students who dislike fast food jobs, and should only be used with that portion of your students. This device can be used as a handout or poster and says: "Which Side of the Counter Do You Prefer? Get a Diploma, the Real-Value Meal." behavior modification

Some of our best ideas aren't really our ideas. The first couple of interventions in this issue were inspired by Dr. Matthew Meyers from LAUSD. By the way, if you are planning on catching our L.A. workshop on April 17-18, it is so full, we had to change venues. The workshop is now being held at the Radisson LAX. Click here for details. If you still haven't signed up, you should contact us as soon as you can.

Shaquille on Line 1

This is such a great idea. This strategy is one of the terrific ideas suggested by Matthew from LAUSD. Staff at his site are working to create celebrity wake-up calls for students. It fits L.A. perfectly and you can easily make it fit your part of the world. Get local or national celebrities to record wake-up calls for your students and start their day with a bang. No one sleeps through a call from a big name star. Their eyes will be wide open.

Put Your Doors to Work

Get These 2 Resources Free!
student learning resource student testing help
For years we have been recommending that you put your walls to work by using behavior change posters-- to see our posters, click here. At LAUSD, they don't just work their walls, they even work their doors too. They have created door hangers that they leave on the homes of absent students. We liked that idea so much that we created door hangers for the classroom (pictured above). As you can see, the door hangers focus on instruction and testing, and are very motivational. To get these door hangers for free, please tell a co-worker about our site using this link (click here), then click here to send us an email requesting the door hangers. You will receive the door hangers by email and will be able to immediately print them on your printer. You must contact us by April 9.

Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates

They put really successful athletes on the cover of a box of Wheaties, the Breakfast of Champions. Have your students put themselves on the cover of "Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates." To do this, purchase boxes of Wheaties and have your students alter them, or provide them the art supplies to create mock-ups. If you have a digital camera, have students take head shots then transfer them to your computer. Next, print the pictures and have students add them to the cereal boxes. This activity is a lot of fun and potentially inspirational. Plus, it's hard to stay sour and negative about school when you are involved in a fun project like this.

Put Your Shirt to Work

In this issue, we've already discussed putting your walls and doors to work. If you're a teacher, now it's time to put your clothing to work too. Create buttons or stickers that say "Call Me Banker" or "Don't Call Me Teacher" and attach to your shirt. Inevitably, students will ask why your button or sticker makes such a bogus claim. Reply by noting that since graduates earn $329,000 more than dropouts, you prefer to be called "Banker."

iPod Planet

Like many people who work with children and adolescents, you probably don't know which you hate more: iPods in class or cell phones in class. Instead of waging a constant battle against distracting technology, prevent problems before they start. First, have students make a list of The Worst Places to Use Your iPod or The Worst Places to Use Your Cell Phone. Include suggestions like "during surgery" and "at church." Be sure to include your site on the list. Post the lists on the wall, then warn students that they will face unimaginable consequences if they use their iPod or phone in class. Be sure to convey this message using humor because students will face humorous sanctions. Students will be required to switch to an obsolete version of the offending device for the rest of the class or day. So the iPod will be traded for a cassette player or clunky 8 track tape player. The cell phone will be traded for a dial phone. The trades should be done using lots of humor to ensure that you avoid the usual power struggles that iPods and cell phones can normally cause. If you don't have ancient cassette players and phones at home, you can pick them up inexpensively in thrift shops. Students are often intrigued to use low tech technology like dial phones that they may not have seen or heard of before; that intrigue can even distract them from arguing. Ultimately, students who use prohibited devices will come to expect that they will have to trade their cute little iPod for a dusty, over-sized record player.

It's our 19th anniversary. To help us celebrate, we have two free things included in this issue.

5 Free Workshop Registrations

First, we are giving away 5 free workshop guest passes (worth $169 each) to our workshops coming to Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; and Kansas City, Missouri. To be entered for a free workshop guest pass, it takes two quick steps. First, tell a colleague about our website using this link. Second, click here to tell us which city you would like to attend then send us your request. We will randomly select 5 people from all those who enter. We will pick the winners March 5 so make sure your request reaches us before then. Due to space concerns, the guest passes will only be accepted in Atlanta, Seattle, and Kansas City. While Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon do not have enough space left for us to accept guest passes, note that we do have half-price $84 work study slots still open for these cities. Call 1-800-545-5736 to grab one before they are taken.

girls self-esteem worksheets Have you ever noticed that most interventions are geared for boys, or are generic, one-gender-fits-all interventions. This intervention worksheet is intended just for girls, although you can use it with boys if you wish. This provocative handout is the perfect conversation-starter for girls' counseling groups, health classes, contemporary issues classes, and living skills courses. It also works well with individual students. It tackles a tough problem area: body image. It also raises issues of weight, self-image, beauty, culture and societal expectations of girls. This handout will start important conversations and provoke insights when mere words and generic methods can't. Click here or on the picture to get this handout now.

I'll Do It Someday

If you had a nickel for every time a youngster told you that they will do what you ask...someday. This is a light, fun intervention. The next time you hear "someday" in answer to a request to a student, escort the student to your calendar and say: "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Where's Someday?" Your goal is to teach students that someday doesn't exist.

Interventions for Drama Queens-- and Kings

You don't work in a theater, but you are surrounded by drama. If you are tired of the theatrics at your school or agency, this very simple intervention can become your new mantra. Teach your students: "No Extreme Emotions." If you prefer to say it more positively, "Moderate Emotions Only." If you work with adolescents, it may seem like you are saying "cool it" to a raging fire, but this saying can help. It is uncomfortable for youngsters to be in perpetual chaos, anger, anxiety, or distress. Market "No Extreme Emotions" as a way out of the constant discomfort. Remember that children and teens don't necessarily realize that their conduct is out of the norm so teach them "Drama only belongs in theaters." Consider having students make posters that illustrate this caption: More School, Less Drama.

The Recession or Depression? Game

There is an old saying about bad economic times: It's a recession when other people lose their jobs. It's a depression when you lose your job. Teach your students about the terms "recession" and "depression," then help them determine if they are prepared to keep regularly occurring, ordinary recessions from becoming disastrous depressions. Play the "Recession or Depression?" game. Divide students into two groups then ask each group to determine the truth about what can happen to people during economic downturns. Reward correct answers by giving students play money. Penalize wrong answers by taking away money, or having the group "go into debt." The purpose of using the play money is to make the game more concrete and real than you can achieve just using verbiage. Ask students to determine which of the following facts are true. (All are true.)

-No diploma? You double your chances of
       being unemployed
-Dropouts are the first fired, last hired
-Graduates often send the layoff notices that
       everyone else opens
-Graduates can do and understand more than everyone
else so they can do better than everyone even when
       the economy does worse
-Jobs that don't require a diploma are disappearing
-In bad economic times, there are more people than jobs
so grads take the jobs dropouts could otherwise

school guide

We continue to get the same questions on discipline again and again at our workshops that are touring the country, and coming soon near you (click). In this issue we will give you our best answers. If you would like to come to a live session, for a limited time, subscribers can take $50 off the live or recorded seminar fee (click for details). In both our live and recorded professional development courses, we give you hundreds of strategies that answer "How do I get kids to behave?" In the meantime, here are some of our best tips and tricks to get you started on improving discipline in your classroom or group room. There is even a free handout included below so be sure that you don't miss it.

Here is the surprising truth about discipline: Discipline and consequences are often ineffective. Yes, every school or agency needs both, but alone, they don't work. Alone? Yes, if you have a discipline and consequence structure set up, but have not first taught your students the skills, motivation and attitudes that they need to perform the desired behaviors, you will almost certainly find your discipline is ineffective.

Children and youth often can not do behaviors that they were never taught. Further, those youngsters who have bad attitudes and no motivation may have no interest in performing to your satisfaction. Yet, teaching students to have the desired skills, motivation and attitude is almost universally over-looked at most sites. If you want to remedy that oversight, here are the 3 essential elements that must preface or accompany your discipline and consequences:

STEP #1
Want Discipline? Teach Skills

Years ago, families taught their offspring the basic skills required in school and other settings. Now, many students have never been taught the necessary nuts-and-bolts behaviors that are essential to functioning. They may see bad behavior at home and bring it with them to your site. That's why many youth seem to have no sense of acceptable anger control, verbiage, or personal space and distance. Set up any discipline and consequences you want, but if the child lacks the key skills to comply, discipline can't make much difference.

The list of necessary skills is long, and includes attendance, discussion skills, respect for teachers, respect for peers, punctuality, homework management, hallway behavior, how to sit at a desk, how to use a locker, and on and on and on. Expecting these skills before teaching them is like expecting snow in summer. It's not very likely. Notice how consequences and discipline can not compensate for missing specific skills like those listed above. Get more examples of how to teach these skills by clicking here.

STEP #2
Want Discipline? Teach Motivation

Get This Handout FREE
printable handout If a child believes that your service is unimportant, their behavior is likely to reflect that belief. Children once learned at home about the value of school or your service. If contemporary students don't learn that at home, and you don't teach it at your site, the child's behavior may reflect their contempt despite any disciplinary efforts.

Here is a sample handout to teach motivation (click here or on the picture). The handout illustrates what we mean when we say "motivate students." This worksheet markets math like it was a pair of jeans or an MP3 player. Yes, it is sad to have to do that, but discipline without motivation is like summer without heat: you may wish it was different, but wishing doesn't change anything. This handout opens in your Adobe PDF viewer, which almost everyone has in their computer. Don't have it? Get it here free.

STEP #3
Want Discipline? Build Positive Attitudes

teacher worksheet If a child has a negative attitude about your site, that's likely to be reflected in problematic conduct. Discipline usually can't compel a child to change, but adjusting the child's attitude to be more positive, can create results that by comparison, seem almost magical.

Here is a sample technique: Ask students to write Help Wanted classified ads that start with "Desperately Seeking Someone Mean to Join Our Team." Discuss the ads that students produce and help students consider if bosses hire and keep surly employees. Want an example to show students to inspire them to create great ads? Look at Poster 37 (click) and use it as your example.

If your students believe that your site exists just for dating purposes, we've got some delightfully different, unusually effective interventions that you may want to use right away. You can even get a couple of free innovative handouts from us that you can print and use with students. (Scroll below or click here for details.) If you are tired of the constant public displays of affection (PDAs) that don't belong in a school or agency setting, our new interventions can help. Because these new methods rely heavily on humor, they may work much better than conventional approaches.

worksheet handout When adults confront students about inappropriate displays of affection, students often become angry, argumentative and disagreeable. The best way to avoid that type of reaction is humor. This funny handout can provide that humor. Click here to enlarge the picture. This handout is also available as a poster. It's Poster #118, $8; click to view. To avoid some of the arguing, emphasize to students that you are only concerned about "the right time and right place" for dating activities, that you are not against dating activities in the correct setting. Assist students to determine that the cinema is an appropriate setting but your site is not.

Exit the Hormone Zone

peer interaction poster It's not even close to spring but you may already feel like you work in the Hormone Zone. Conventional, straight-forward interventions may not help the situation. Give this humorous alternative a try instead. Label your classroom or group room a No Cuddle Zone. You can have students create signs to warn all who pass through the door that they've entered a No Cuddle Zone. Our Poster #121 can provide an example. Click here or on the poster to enlarge it.

But Everyone Does It

One of the most common excuses students offer for engaging in PDAs is that "everyone is doing it too". That's hardly true. Help your students discover that for themselves. Here is a most engaging and provocative way to convey that reality. When students say that "everyone else is doing it," ask students if their parents act that way. Most students groan and say they would never want to be around their parents acting like that. Once students have that insight, turn the tables on them, and note that parents, siblings, peers, teachers, and many others prefer not to watch students' PDAs every bit as much as students prefer not to watch parental affection. Be sure to use this intervention very carefully as it could unintentionally strike a nerve in children with family problems. This intervention should be done with great lightness and lots of humor to avoid that. An important tip to avoid problems: Rather than have children think about their own parents, have them think about parents in general. Unless you are 100% sure that you can use this device successfully, skip it entirely. If you want to use this strategy without risk, change "parents" to specific other adults like pilots, plumbers, or cashiers, and have students identify if these adults are engaging in PDA on the job.

Work Place Kissy Face

Students are often quick to assert that your site's rules regarding PDA are unrealistic, outmoded and out-of-date. When students make that claim, reply that they might be right. Next, note that since your job is to prepare students for the real world, all your rules mirror the major employers in the region. Ask students to identify major employers in the region and their standards for PDA. Students will quickly discover how few work sites permit dating activities during what is supposed to be work time. Be sure to conclude the discussion by noting that as soon as the biggest employers in your region schedules daily Coffee and Kiss breaks, your site will too.

There was definitely a theme to many of our Fall '07 workshops. Many of you continued to emphasize that your classroom and school have become seriously out-of-control. To start off the new year, it only makes sense to give our top tips to repair serious problems at your school or agency. By the way, for those of you who did attend one of our Fall seminars, we have a new page full of the resources you heard and saw in the workshop. This Past Workshop Participants Only page is just for those of you who have attended the workshop. Reach it by clicking here.

Here are our initial suggestions for what to do to salvage a school year that has been unusually difficult or dangerous.

Start Over

Many professionals do not realize that it is always easier to stop the problematic class than to salvage it. No, you don't have to board up your classroom and hang a "Closed" sign on the door, but understand that it is much harder to fix a broken class than to just start over. To start over, you can declare the old class as done, and begin fresh in every possible regard. Scrap the rules and make new ones. Rearrange your furniture, develop a new seating plan, and even consider renaming your class. It will also be important to discuss the problems with the class, and to work with your students to make this new venture work better. However, these initial changes will not be enough. You have to be different and teach differently. It's way past time to understand that "same-old-same-old" methods will not magically start working. It may be time to realize that you must upgrade your skills and methods for working with out-of-control youth. Some specific suggestions to begin those upgrades are below.

It's Not Just About Relationships Anymore You may really struggle to manage your most misbehaved students if you use relationship-based approaches with all of them. While we love relationship-based methods with most students, youngsters are not one-method-fits-all creatures. Relationship-based methods (including character ed, values clarification, trust-building, and praise) will fail with the most unmanageable students, conduct disorders. This internet magazine's second and third issues (click) gave you an introduction to conduct disorders. Those issues alerted you to avoid most relationship-based and conventional approaches with CDs. If you use just one style of behavior control methods with all your students, you probably have already discovered that "nothing works" to control your class. Here are some resources that show you methods that will work far better. These updated, targeted interventions are exactly what you need to establish control. Read: Teachers: Did Your Training Prepare You to Work with Difficult, Tardy, Truant and Conduct Disordered Students? by clicking here. If you want more than just introductory help, click here to get all the information you need on conduct disorders in one place, our Conduct Disorders: All the Best Answers for the Worst Kid Problems book. The bottom line: Until you learn about conduct disorders, regaining control may remain impossible.

Become a Fearless Manager

You know the teachers-- the ones who can manage almost any class or group. No one can simply hand you techniques and make you one of those teachers. Even the most updated methods can't hide any fear or worry you may have. Our strategies will help, but they won't alleviate the need to become one of those fearless managers who know that they can manage any class, no matter how difficult. The truth is that students have amazing radar. They read us adults like open comic books. If part of you is really worried about successfully controlling a group, that fear becomes like neon, and everything else you do is reduced to a whisper. You need to develop that internal fortitude and certainty that you can manage even the most unmanageable group. To gain that, we suggest watching the true pros of class and group management. We especially recommend that you find someone with a similar personality and style. Juvenile court and corrections staff, vice-principals, alternative ed teachers, and special ed teachers often provide some of the best models because they have honed their skills with the toughest students.

Students Wanted, No Skills Required

Since most schools have no formal curriculum to train kids how to be students, you are expecting students to have skills they may never have been taught. That's like expecting students to know how to swim even though they've never been taught. You have to actually teach the school behavior skills that you want students to use in your classroom. Otherwise, you set rules that many students are untrained and unprepared to follow. You absolutely must teach all the school skills that students need. A few of the most important on a long list include: respect for teachers, how to be part of a class discussion, what words to use, how often to talk out during class, how to get help from teachers, and how to interact with other students. Be sure you work on students' motivation too. Skill training alone isn't enough. You must convince students that school is incredibly important. Need dynamic ways to do that?
Use the motivational interventions pictured on our posters. You don't have to buy the posters; just read the ideas and use them. Click here.

Set Behavior Standards and Ensure Compliance

You can not permit the kind of behavior problems that have been occurring at some sites this school year. Some of the participants in our workshops (click for upcoming dates) have described students who are inappropriately touching teachers, openly defying teachers, and entering and leaving classrooms at will. You can not allow the standards for behavior to slide. There is no way back if you do. Right from the very start, you must have high expectations and compel your students to live up to those standards. We have heard from teachers who just keep teaching while students refuse to quiet down or pay attention. Imagine the chaos if other compliance-based settings operated in such a manner. For example, would there be any order in a grocery store if the clerk just handed you your groceries after you announce that you'll be taking your groceries but not paying? You are the "brakes" for out-of-control students. When you don't provide acting-out students with help to stop misbehavior, there is nothing to slow them down. You must stop instruction and address misconduct. Ideally, you will get to the point where you can prevent disruption before it starts. For now, if you are someone who does need to repair a "broken" school year, be sure to promptly acknowledge and effectively address misbehavior. The longer you wait, the worse it will get.
