is "The Breakfast of Graduates." Note that the cereal bowl is overflowing with dollar bills.
That's because-- as noted on the box-- "Grads Earn Twice as Much." The picture (at left)
shows our
Poster 132 (click to view) but as a subscriber, you can get this item in
handout form free. The handout version of this device leaves a blank spot
for you to add students' faces to the cereal box, or students can make this
addition on their own.

Our
Poster 120 (shown at left, or click here) always generates lots of laughter from students.
The poster pictures a newspaper headline that says "School: It Isn't Just for Dating Anymore."
You can purchase that
poster (click), or get the handout version here for free.
The handout version of this device leaves most of the newspaper blank so your
students can make the headline become anything they choose. For example,
students might write "School Isn't Just for Talking on Your Cell Phone Anymore."

Teachers continue to face what some call "the perfect storm" (USA Today 08/14/03). Shrinking budgets and mounting state proficiency test requirements for both students and teachers continue to hammer educators. No Child Left Behind has created conditions that many teachers find tough to survive. In Texas, one vice-principal captured the worry by referring to the law as " No Child Left Behind, No Teacher Left Standing."
Throughout summer, we have been trekking from school to school to school teaching our
popular Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop at each school as each team's start-of-the-year inservice. We have been doing this every summer for the past 19 years so we know what to expect from school staff who are returning for another year. But, this year is a bit different. Instead of finding tanned, relaxed, ebullient staff, excited to begin another school year, this year, at many schools, we also are seeing more apprehension and cynicism than is customary for those normally halcyon days prior to students returning.
If teachers face greater challenges than ever before, at a time when they are equipped with less resources than ever before, then it becomes crucial to fully use and mine every second of instruction time. However, the typical teacher loses about 22 minutes of every 50 minutes of instruction time to on-demand behavior management. That is time no contemporary teacher can afford to lose. Here are five of our innovative, one-of-a-kind methods to help you create your most productive school year ever-- even though you may face bigger hurdles than ever before.
1. START WITH A BANG TO BUILD A LASTING BOND
TRY THIS HANDOUT FREE!
Especially if you work with students who are utterly sour and negative about teachers, you must establish a positive, powerful presence from the first second of class. Here's a sampling of a wonderful device that you can make-- or order it from us for $15. It's a humorous manual that shows students how to get their teacher to "work right."
The full manual is in our book/ebook called
A Student's Guide to the Care and Heeding of Teachers.
The full manual is in our
Last Chance School Success Guide book or instant ebook (click to view),
but you can see and print part of the
manual here for free (click). If you want the entire manual, order it
here (click) or call toll-free to 1-800-545-5736. We suggest that you attach
the little manual to a string and dangle it off your sleeve until one of your students asks about it. You can then tell the class that the item is a manual-- like those that come with a new computer or jacket-- and this one shows you how to make your teacher work properly. Our version is extremely funny, noting, for example, that "this teacher does not include optional mind-reading capabilities and cannot magically determine when you need help." The full manual has a reputation for engaging even the most negative youngster, but you don't have to get ours. You can construct your
own version and make it say anything you want.

2. ORIENTATION ISN'T ENOUGH-- TEACH SKILLS INSTEAD
Organizations function best when each player has been trained and oriented to understand and meet standards. Note that stating the expectations is seldom sufficient to gain compliance. For example, students who have not been taught adult interaction skills by their parents, may lack the skills to interact properly with their teacher, principal, bus driver, etc. Stating the expectations may do little to teach what words to use, what words to not use, what voice tone, what voice level, how often to be non-compliant, and so on. You can expect whatever you want from students, but if you fail to teach it, it may be an unfair expectation, a lot like expecting students to have reading or math skills without having first taught those skills.
Students will not only lack adult interaction skills, but will need nuts-and-bolts skill training to develop and use appropriate skills for peer interaction, compliance, verbiage, punctuality, attendance, attitude, focusing, and so on. Unless you teach ALL the skills you expect, it's likely that you will continue to lose 22 minutes of each 50 minute period of instruction. By teaching these skills, you can get back all or most of that otherwise lost instruction time.
3. SURVEY YOUR CONSUMERS
People-- both young and old-- absolutely love to have a say in how things are run. Don't you? Want to grab your students' attention from the very start? Want them to view you and the class positively? Want them to feel hopeful and optimistic about what your class will cover this school year? Here is a quick, almost no-fail method: Survey your "consumers" and give them a voice. Include fill-in-the-blank questions like "The one thing I don't like about math is..."
and "The one thing I wish teachers would do differently is...." Have young students or non-readers? Read the
questions to your students, then have them simply circle happy and sad face icons in place of words to communicate their
answers.

4. ATTEND TO THIS FIRST
The time to teach attendance and punctuality is Day 1, Week 1. The minute they arrive is the time to ensure that students keep on arriving. Don't rely on families to teach this. As discussed above, it is not sufficient to orient students by reminding them of the times that they are to arrive. You must teach them EVERYTHING they need to know to meet the expectation. Be sure to include how to wake up, wash up, eat up, dress up, and leave for school.
If you expect specific attendance skills, you need to teach those skills first, then expect the skills second.
5. MOTIVATE THE MOTIONLESS
When you were in college, did they offer you course after course on motivating students? Probably not. Could you have used courses like that? Absolutely. Luckily, we have maximum- strength motivation-makers that shock students into realizing that they can't even make it through the morning without education. We cover it all, and so should you! Be sure to cover all the excuses that you hear including, "I'll never need school because...I'll marry a wealthy man...go on welfare... be a rock star...be a sports star...win the lottery...my family will take care of me...the tribe will take care of me..." The fastest way to see our newest, knock-your-socks-off, over-the-top motivators is to look at our
posters (click).
You don't have to buy anything to use the interventions pictured. For example, you can immediately use the words on
Poster 128 (shown above),

Our Spring '08 workshops were really packed with participants so we read a lot of evaluations.
Many of the evaluations from the Spring inservice tour
included requests for us to post favorite interventions. We noticed that many workshop participants requested
the same handful of interventions. By popular request, we are posting your favorite interventions right here.
# 1 Favorite Intervention
Where Will Your TV Watching Skills Be Needed?
Any intervention that used a classified ad format was very popular. The method listed here was the
most popular of the bunch. The intervention is to ask students to write Help Wanted ads based on
the set of skills they are acquiring. Many participants liked the examples we gave in class of the
ads students create and wanted copies. They like how these silly ads may leave students wondering
"Where will my TV watching skills be needed?"
Here are some of the examples that drew the most comment:
Experienced TV Viewers Needed for High Paying Jobs
Large company seeks TV viewers to work long hours in a horizontal position. Must like donuts and chips.
National Firm Needs Nappers Now
If you like to sleep, this job opportunity will open your eyes. If you wake at the crack of noon,
we can wait. On-time applications not accepted.
Mall Rats Wanted for Executive Positions
Years of leaning against the wall or sitting on a bench required for exciting opportunity with
major corporation. If you know how to hang out for hours, then your future as one of our
hard-driving employees is simply unlimited. If you can demonstrate the ability to say something
really nasty about everyone who walks by, then you may be that special person we need in
customer relations. Put those valuable years of experience as a mall rat to work with us.
Violent Video Game Pros Needed for Government Espionage
If you can navigate mazes, break codes or kill the beast, then a career with the CIA
or FBI may be for you. We need people like you who can get to the highest level
no matter what vicious dragons or pre-historic dinosaurs get in the way.

# 2 Favorite Intervention
Gallons for Graduates
Participants really like interventions that sell the value of school, and wanted some
more. Here is a new one. Right now
it is a particularly easy sell if you relate school to the price of gas. Here is
the connection. The typical dropout earns about $500 per month working minimum
wage at one or more jobs. With gas
currently approaching $4 a gallon, and minimum wage approaching $7 an hour,
have students calculate how many hours a dropout must work to buy a tank of gas.
To make the numbers come to life, have students determine how long they must
work to just drive to a neighboring city, nearby state, or popular regional destination.
Have them determine how much they will spend just to go to their job each day.
With gas expected to top $5 a gallon in the near future, be sure to help students discover
that one dropout with one job may not be able to afford a tank of gas while
also paying housing, medical bills, car payments, clothing, recreation and so on.
Help students to discover that if gas prices continue to rise, dropouts may be
able to afford a car they can't afford to drive. By contrast, graduates earn
roughly twice the salary of dropouts and may be better prepared to stay on the road.
You are re-shaping students' image of school by making it critical to being
able to afford to drive.
A fun follow-up intervention: have students illustrate the phrase,
"Gallons for Graduates." They can use art supplies or computer clip art to create
fanciful images like a merged
diploma and gas pump, or by showing a gas station where everyone who is buying
gas is wearing a cap and gown, or clutching a diploma.

# 3 Favorite Intervention
The Best-Liked Bully-Busters
Our Spring workshop participants
commented a lot about our interventions for bullies. They liked that our interventions don't
rely on remorse or compassion because so many bullies appear to lack those qualities. They
appreciated how the interventions were always related to the bully's self-interest, and
agreed with what we teach in class, that many bullies only care about I-Me, I-Me, I-Me, and
nothing else. On the workshop evaluations, a number of participants
asked us to post more examples of relating anti-bullying interventions to the self-interest
of the bullies. Here are a couple of posters that illustrate that. They are good examples of
how to always be sure that anti-bullying interventions are closely tied to what the student
can lose or gain by using bullying behaviors. A lot of the counselors also liked the
use of humor when working with bullies. An example of that is shown in the second poster.
We do strongly encourage that humor be incorporated in anti-bullying interventions to
streamline your interactions and improve your results.
Here are
Posters 71 and 97. You don't need to buy
the poster; you can just use the technique pictured.
If you do want to buy posters, they're $8 each; click here. If you want
additional anti-bullying ideas, we have many more posters that you can view to
get innovative methods that you can easily adapt and use; click here.

All Jobs Now Require a Diploma!

This intervention is so surprising that even your co-workers may react with shock. It is
such a potent device that it won't just jar your students-- it may grab the attention
of anyone who sees it-- even adults. As you can see from the picture at left, the poster proclaims that
"All jobs now require a diploma." The small text at the bottom says "Think this poster is scary?
Try life without a diploma." The text at the bottom may be small but it may also be haunting. This
intervention works as both a handout or wall poster, plus you could use this device verbally.

You can make your own version of the intervention detailed above. Better yet, get a free, printable

Your Diploma: The Real Value Meal
Get This Handout/Poster Free! (Click)
Many students are quite vocal about not wanting to work in fast food. They may be
equally vocal about not wanting to do anything in school. Here is a device that
may propel students who disdain a career in fast food, to care a bit more about
finishing school. This intervention and the next intervention below, will give you
two new tools to transform students' dislike of working in fast food into renewed
interest in school. These devices will only work with students who dislike fast food
jobs, and should only be used with that portion of your students. This device can be
used as a handout or poster and says: "Which Side of the Counter Do You Prefer?
Get a Diploma, the Real-Value Meal."

Some of our best ideas aren't really our ideas. The first couple of interventions in this
issue were inspired by Dr. Matthew Meyers from LAUSD. By the way, if you are
planning on catching our L.A. workshop on April 17-18,
it is so full, we had to change venues. The workshop
is now being held at the Radisson LAX.
Click here for details. If you still haven't signed up, you should contact us as soon as
you can.
Shaquille on Line 1
This is such a great idea. This strategy is one of the terrific ideas suggested by Matthew from LAUSD. Staff at
his site are working to create celebrity wake-up calls for students. It
fits L.A. perfectly and you can easily make it fit your part of the world. Get local or national celebrities
to record wake-up calls for your students and start their day with a bang. No one sleeps through
a call from a big name star. Their eyes will be wide open.
Put Your Doors to Work
Get These 2 Resources Free!
For years we have been recommending that you put your walls to work by using
behavior change posters-- to see our posters, click here. At LAUSD, they don't just
work their walls, they even work their doors too. They have created door hangers that they leave
on the homes of absent students. We liked that idea so much that we created door hangers for
the classroom (pictured above). As you can see, the door hangers focus on instruction and testing, and
are very motivational. To get these door hangers for free, please tell a co-worker about our
site using this link (click here), then
click here to send us an email requesting the door hangers. You will receive the door hangers by
email and will be able to immediately print them on your printer. You must contact us
by April 9.

Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates
They put really successful athletes on the cover of a box of Wheaties, the Breakfast of
Champions. Have your students put themselves on the cover of "Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates."
To do this, purchase boxes of Wheaties and have your students alter them, or provide them the
art supplies to create mock-ups. If you have a digital camera, have students take
head shots then transfer them to your computer. Next, print the pictures and have students add them
to the cereal boxes. This activity is a lot of fun and potentially inspirational. Plus, it's hard to stay sour
and negative about school when you are involved in a fun project like this.
Put Your Shirt to Work
In this issue, we've already discussed putting your walls and doors to work. If you're a teacher,
now it's time to put your clothing to work too. Create buttons or stickers that say "Call Me Banker" or
"Don't Call Me Teacher" and attach to your shirt. Inevitably, students will ask why your button or sticker
makes such a bogus claim. Reply by noting that since
graduates earn $329,000 more than dropouts, you prefer to be called "Banker."

iPod Planet
Like many people who work with children and adolescents, you probably don't know
which you hate more: iPods in class or cell phones in class. Instead of waging a constant
battle against distracting technology, prevent problems before they start. First, have
students make a list of The Worst Places to Use Your iPod or The Worst Places to
Use Your Cell Phone. Include suggestions like "during surgery" and "at church." Be sure
to include your site on the list. Post the lists on the wall, then warn students that they
will face unimaginable consequences if they use their iPod or phone in class. Be sure
to convey this message using humor because students will face humorous sanctions.
Students will be required to switch to an obsolete version of the offending device for the
rest of the class or day. So the iPod will be traded for a cassette player or clunky 8 track tape player.
The cell phone will be traded for a dial phone. The trades should be done using lots of humor to ensure
that you avoid the usual power struggles that iPods and cell phones can normally cause. If you don't
have ancient cassette players and phones at home, you can pick them up inexpensively in thrift shops.
Students are often intrigued to use low tech technology like dial phones
that they may not have seen or heard of before; that intrigue can even distract them from
arguing. Ultimately, students who use prohibited devices will come to expect that they
will have to trade their cute little iPod for a dusty, over-sized record player.
