Some of our best ideas aren't really our ideas. The first couple of interventions in this issue were inspired by Dr. Matthew Meyers from LAUSD. By the way, if you are planning on catching our L.A. workshop on April 17-18, it is so full, we had to change venues. The workshop is now being held at the Radisson LAX. Click here for details. If you still haven't signed up, you should contact us as soon as you can.

Shaquille on Line 1

This is such a great idea. This strategy is one of the terrific ideas suggested by Matthew from LAUSD. Staff at his site are working to create celebrity wake-up calls for students. It fits L.A. perfectly and you can easily make it fit your part of the world. Get local or national celebrities to record wake-up calls for your students and start their day with a bang. No one sleeps through a call from a big name star. Their eyes will be wide open.

Put Your Doors to Work

Get These 2 Resources Free!
student learning resource student testing help
For years we have been recommending that you put your walls to work by using behavior change posters-- to see our posters, click here. At LAUSD, they don't just work their walls, they even work their doors too. They have created door hangers that they leave on the homes of absent students. We liked that idea so much that we created door hangers for the classroom (pictured above). As you can see, the door hangers focus on instruction and testing, and are very motivational. To get these door hangers for free, please tell a co-worker about our site using this link (click here), then click here to send us an email requesting the door hangers. You will receive the door hangers by email and will be able to immediately print them on your printer. You must contact us by April 9.

Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates

They put really successful athletes on the cover of a box of Wheaties, the Breakfast of Champions. Have your students put themselves on the cover of "Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates." To do this, purchase boxes of Wheaties and have your students alter them, or provide them the art supplies to create mock-ups. If you have a digital camera, have students take head shots then transfer them to your computer. Next, print the pictures and have students add them to the cereal boxes. This activity is a lot of fun and potentially inspirational. Plus, it's hard to stay sour and negative about school when you are involved in a fun project like this.

Put Your Shirt to Work

In this issue, we've already discussed putting your walls and doors to work. If you're a teacher, now it's time to put your clothing to work too. Create buttons or stickers that say "Call Me Banker" or "Don't Call Me Teacher" and attach to your shirt. Inevitably, students will ask why your button or sticker makes such a bogus claim. Reply by noting that since graduates earn $329,000 more than dropouts, you prefer to be called "Banker."

iPod Planet

Like many people who work with children and adolescents, you probably don't know which you hate more: iPods in class or cell phones in class. Instead of waging a constant battle against distracting technology, prevent problems before they start. First, have students make a list of The Worst Places to Use Your iPod or The Worst Places to Use Your Cell Phone. Include suggestions like "during surgery" and "at church." Be sure to include your site on the list. Post the lists on the wall, then warn students that they will face unimaginable consequences if they use their iPod or phone in class. Be sure to convey this message using humor because students will face humorous sanctions. Students will be required to switch to an obsolete version of the offending device for the rest of the class or day. So the iPod will be traded for a cassette player or clunky 8 track tape player. The cell phone will be traded for a dial phone. The trades should be done using lots of humor to ensure that you avoid the usual power struggles that iPods and cell phones can normally cause. If you don't have ancient cassette players and phones at home, you can pick them up inexpensively in thrift shops. Students are often intrigued to use low tech technology like dial phones that they may not have seen or heard of before; that intrigue can even distract them from arguing. Ultimately, students who use prohibited devices will come to expect that they will have to trade their cute little iPod for a dusty, over-sized record player.

It's our 19th anniversary. To help us celebrate, we have two free things included in this issue.

5 Free Workshop Registrations

First, we are giving away 5 free workshop guest passes (worth $169 each) to our workshops coming to Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; and Kansas City, Missouri. To be entered for a free workshop guest pass, it takes two quick steps. First, tell a colleague about our website using this link. Second, click here to tell us which city you would like to attend then send us your request. We will randomly select 5 people from all those who enter. We will pick the winners March 5 so make sure your request reaches us before then. Due to space concerns, the guest passes will only be accepted in Atlanta, Seattle, and Kansas City. While Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon do not have enough space left for us to accept guest passes, note that we do have half-price $84 work study slots still open for these cities. Call 1-800-545-5736 to grab one before they are taken.

girls self-esteem worksheets Have you ever noticed that most interventions are geared for boys, or are generic, one-gender-fits-all interventions. This intervention worksheet is intended just for girls, although you can use it with boys if you wish. This provocative handout is the perfect conversation-starter for girls' counseling groups, health classes, contemporary issues classes, and living skills courses. It also works well with individual students. It tackles a tough problem area: body image. It also raises issues of weight, self-image, beauty, culture and societal expectations of girls. This handout will start important conversations and provoke insights when mere words and generic methods can't. Click here or on the picture to get this handout now.

I'll Do It Someday

If you had a nickel for every time a youngster told you that they will do what you ask...someday. This is a light, fun intervention. The next time you hear "someday" in answer to a request to a student, escort the student to your calendar and say: "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Where's Someday?" Your goal is to teach students that someday doesn't exist.

Interventions for Drama Queens-- and Kings

You don't work in a theater, but you are surrounded by drama. If you are tired of the theatrics at your school or agency, this very simple intervention can become your new mantra. Teach your students: "No Extreme Emotions." If you prefer to say it more positively, "Moderate Emotions Only." If you work with adolescents, it may seem like you are saying "cool it" to a raging fire, but this saying can help. It is uncomfortable for youngsters to be in perpetual chaos, anger, anxiety, or distress. Market "No Extreme Emotions" as a way out of the constant discomfort. Remember that children and teens don't necessarily realize that their conduct is out of the norm so teach them "Drama only belongs in theaters." Consider having students make posters that illustrate this caption: More School, Less Drama.

The Recession or Depression? Game

There is an old saying about bad economic times: It's a recession when other people lose their jobs. It's a depression when you lose your job. Teach your students about the terms "recession" and "depression," then help them determine if they are prepared to keep regularly occurring, ordinary recessions from becoming disastrous depressions. Play the "Recession or Depression?" game. Divide students into two groups then ask each group to determine the truth about what can happen to people during economic downturns. Reward correct answers by giving students play money. Penalize wrong answers by taking away money, or having the group "go into debt." The purpose of using the play money is to make the game more concrete and real than you can achieve just using verbiage. Ask students to determine which of the following facts are true. (All are true.)

-No diploma? You double your chances of
       being unemployed
-Dropouts are the first fired, last hired
-Graduates often send the layoff notices that
       everyone else opens
-Graduates can do and understand more than everyone
else so they can do better than everyone even when
       the economy does worse
-Jobs that don't require a diploma are disappearing
-In bad economic times, there are more people than jobs
so grads take the jobs dropouts could otherwise
       have gotten

We continue to get the same questions on discipline again and again at our workshops that are touring the country, and coming soon near you (click). In this issue we will give you our best answers. If you would like to come to a live session, for a limited time, subscribers can take $50 off the live or recorded seminar fee (click for details). In both our live and recorded professional development courses, we give you hundreds of strategies that answer "How do I get kids to behave?" In the meantime, here are some of our best tips and tricks to get you started on improving discipline in your classroom or group room. There is even a free handout included below so be sure that you don't miss it.

Here is the surprising truth about discipline: Discipline and consequences are often ineffective. Yes, every school or agency needs both, but alone, they don't work. Alone? Yes, if you have a discipline and consequence structure set up, but have not first taught your students the skills, motivation and attitudes that they need to perform the desired behaviors, you will almost certainly find your discipline is ineffective.

Children and youth often can not do behaviors that they were never taught. Further, those youngsters who have bad attitudes and no motivation may have no interest in performing to your satisfaction. Yet, teaching students to have the desired skills, motivation and attitude is almost universally over-looked at most sites. If you want to remedy that oversight, here are the 3 essential elements that must preface or accompany your discipline and consequences:

STEP #1
Want Discipline? Teach Skills

Years ago, families taught their offspring the basic skills required in school and other settings. Now, many students have never been taught the necessary nuts-and-bolts behaviors that are essential to functioning. They may see bad behavior at home and bring it with them to your site. That's why many youth seem to have no sense of acceptable anger control, verbiage, or personal space and distance. Set up any discipline and consequences you want, but if the child lacks the key skills to comply, discipline can't make much difference.

The list of necessary skills is long, and includes attendance, discussion skills, respect for teachers, respect for peers, punctuality, homework management, hallway behavior, how to sit at a desk, how to use a locker, and on and on and on. Expecting these skills before teaching them is like expecting snow in summer. It's not very likely. Notice how consequences and discipline can not compensate for missing specific skills like those listed above. Get more examples of how to teach these skills by clicking here.

STEP #2
Want Discipline? Teach Motivation

Get This Handout FREE
printable handout If a child believes that your service is unimportant, their behavior is likely to reflect that belief. Children once learned at home about the value of school or your service. If contemporary students don't learn that at home, and you don't teach it at your site, the child's behavior may reflect their contempt despite any disciplinary efforts.

Here is a sample handout to teach motivation (click here or on the picture). The handout illustrates what we mean when we say "motivate students." This worksheet markets math like it was a pair of jeans or an MP3 player. Yes, it is sad to have to do that, but discipline without motivation is like summer without heat: you may wish it was different, but wishing doesn't change anything. This handout opens in your Adobe PDF viewer, which almost everyone has in their computer. Don't have it? Get it here free.

STEP #3
Want Discipline? Build Positive Attitudes

teacher worksheet If a child has a negative attitude about your site, that's likely to be reflected in problematic conduct. Discipline usually can't compel a child to change, but adjusting the child's attitude to be more positive, can create results that by comparison, seem almost magical.

Here is a sample technique: Ask students to write Help Wanted classified ads that start with "Desperately Seeking Someone Mean to Join Our Team." Discuss the ads that students produce and help students consider if bosses hire and keep surly employees. Want an example to show students to inspire them to create great ads? Look at Poster 37 (click) and use it as your example.

If your students believe that your site exists just for dating purposes, we've got some delightfully different, unusually effective interventions that you may want to use right away. You can even get a couple of free innovative handouts from us that you can print and use with students. (Scroll below or click here for details.) If you are tired of the constant public displays of affection (PDAs) that don't belong in a school or agency setting, our new interventions can help. Because these new methods rely heavily on humor, they may work much better than conventional approaches.

worksheet handout When adults confront students about inappropriate displays of affection, students often become angry, argumentative and disagreeable. The best way to avoid that type of reaction is humor. This funny handout can provide that humor. Click here to enlarge the picture. This handout is also available as a poster. It's Poster #118, $8; click to view. To avoid some of the arguing, emphasize to students that you are only concerned about "the right time and right place" for dating activities, that you are not against dating activities in the correct setting. Assist students to determine that the cinema is an appropriate setting but your site is not.

Exit the Hormone Zone

peer interaction poster It's not even close to spring but you may already feel like you work in the Hormone Zone. Conventional, straight-forward interventions may not help the situation. Give this humorous alternative a try instead. Label your classroom or group room a No Cuddle Zone. You can have students create signs to warn all who pass through the door that they've entered a No Cuddle Zone. Our Poster #121 can provide an example. Click here or on the poster to enlarge it.

But Everyone Does It

One of the most common excuses students offer for engaging in PDAs is that "everyone is doing it too". That's hardly true. Help your students discover that for themselves. Here is a most engaging and provocative way to convey that reality. When students say that "everyone else is doing it," ask students if their parents act that way. Most students groan and say they would never want to be around their parents acting like that. Once students have that insight, turn the tables on them, and note that parents, siblings, peers, teachers, and many others prefer not to watch students' PDAs every bit as much as students prefer not to watch parental affection. Be sure to use this intervention very carefully as it could unintentionally strike a nerve in children with family problems. This intervention should be done with great lightness and lots of humor to avoid that. An important tip to avoid problems: Rather than have children think about their own parents, have them think about parents in general. Unless you are 100% sure that you can use this device successfully, skip it entirely. If you want to use this strategy without risk, change "parents" to specific other adults like pilots, plumbers, or cashiers, and have students identify if these adults are engaging in PDA on the job.

Work Place Kissy Face

Students are often quick to assert that your site's rules regarding PDA are unrealistic, outmoded and out-of-date. When students make that claim, reply that they might be right. Next, note that since your job is to prepare students for the real world, all your rules mirror the major employers in the region. Ask students to identify major employers in the region and their standards for PDA. Students will quickly discover how few work sites permit dating activities during what is supposed to be work time. Be sure to conclude the discussion by noting that as soon as the biggest employers in your region schedules daily Coffee and Kiss breaks, your site will too.

There was definitely a theme to many of our Fall '07 workshops. Many of you continued to emphasize that your classroom and school have become seriously out-of-control. To start off the new year, it only makes sense to give our top tips to repair serious problems at your school or agency. By the way, for those of you who did attend one of our Fall seminars, we have a new page full of the resources you heard and saw in the workshop. This Past Workshop Participants Only page is just for those of you who have attended the workshop. Reach it by clicking here.

Here are our initial suggestions for what to do to salvage a school year that has been unusually difficult or dangerous.

Start Over

Many professionals do not realize that it is always easier to stop the problematic class than to salvage it. No, you don't have to board up your classroom and hang a "Closed" sign on the door, but understand that it is much harder to fix a broken class than to just start over. To start over, you can declare the old class as done, and begin fresh in every possible regard. Scrap the rules and make new ones. Rearrange your furniture, develop a new seating plan, and even consider renaming your class. It will also be important to discuss the problems with the class, and to work with your students to make this new venture work better. However, these initial changes will not be enough. You have to be different and teach differently. It's way past time to understand that "same-old-same-old" methods will not magically start working. It may be time to realize that you must upgrade your skills and methods for working with out-of-control youth. Some specific suggestions to begin those upgrades are below.
