Controlling Unmanageable Students

Start with Excellent Follow-Through

Even if you want to have warm, friendly bonds with students, you absolutely need to start your school year with tight, firm, consistent classroom management. That means that if you set rules, you enforce those rules. Period. And, yes, that means no “not noticing” infractions that might be difficult to address. Students may be counting on just that reaction. Remember that many acting-out students read us like comic books and know us perhaps better than we know ourselves. Either you start off strong, or you will be stuck trying to fix classroom management problems that are much, much harder to fix than get right the first time. If you start off too tough, students won’t protest when you ease up. If you start off too weak, you’re in for a big battle when you attempt to tighten up.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

No teacher would ever attempt to put all students in a single size of desk, or have all students use a single math book. You are used to tailoring your classroom to meet the specific needs of each child. That approach now needs to be extended to student discipline. One-size-fits-all discipline doesn’t work with seriously misbehaved students. If “nothing” seems to work to rein in your most difficult students, now you know what is going wrong. Read below for more on how to fix it.

 

Test Your Classroom Management Methods Now

Here’s a quick test for you to gauge your classroom management intervention strategies: If you are using relationship-based approaches like character ed and values clarification, for example, you are using inappropriate strategies that are almost certainly doomed to fail. Many of your most out-of-control youngsters are “wired” differently than other students. Recent research into the brain has now confirmed what mental health and juvenile corrections staff have suspected all along: you must switch to interventions that avoid relationship elements. These youngsters will generally behave worse if you don’t. It’s critical that you learn the more effective, specialized techniques required with this type of student. Get a Mini Skills Upgrade

Here is a list of the most critical do’s and don’ts for working with the toughest students to manage. If you memorize these, and carefully adhere to the list, it’s a place to start. This mini skills upgrade is no substitute for more extensive learning, so more comprehensive professional development options are shown below.

DO: Provide far more than minimum sanctions so students can’t evaluate the risk of consequences for misbehavior. DO: Keep the sanctions very steep to minimize misbehavior. DO: Make sure every interaction with severely acting-out students includes a focus on the one thing they care about most– me-me-me. DO: Be wary of heartfelt apologies and don’t reduce sanctions for tears and “sorrys.” DO: Function as part of a cohesive team. Staff interaction problems result in students playing and winning at Divide and Conquer.

DON’T: Debate or discuss. Just talk then walk instead of being played during prolonged discussions. DON’T: Give second chances. DON’T: Be so predictable. When students can forecast your actions, they arrange their misconduct accordingly, perhaps misbehaving at 10 AM when you normally leave the room momentarily. DON’T: Interact in a mode other than businesslike; heart-to-heart is the path to being played. DON’T: Doubt your ability to manage acting-out students because they can smell uncertainty from afar. Find a boss or mentor to help if you are uncertain. No strategy can compensate for uncertainty.

I'm Youth Change Workshop's Director, Ruth Herman Wells. As a staff trainer who has led professional development workshops in every corner of North America, I have to say that very few school districts have a formal plan to train kids to become successful students. Years ago, parents routinely taught their offspring to look, act, and sound like students. Now, many families can't or won't give their children the motivation, attitudes, and specific School Skills they need to succeed in school. For all the research, fads, opinions, debates, and testing, this is the elephant in the classroom– that School Behavior Skills are universally expected but seldom taught.

It doesn't take years of research to determine that it is probably completely unrealistic to expect children to perform tasks they've never been taught. Schools expect a wide range of skills from students, from attendance and punctuality to recognizing the value of education, from showing respect for the teacher to wearing appropriate attire, from chair-sitting skills to homework management skills, and from class discussion skills to interacting with peers.

Can you imagine what would happen if schools expected students to know academic skills that were never taught? A plan like that could only end in disaster– but everyday, teachers expect children to use School Skills that they were never taught. Unsurprisingly, many youngsters fail to perform these untaught skills, and that is a big part of why there are so many  serious, persistent behavior problems in today's schools. Having never been taught essential School Skills, it is inevitable that violence, bullying, work refusal, tardiness, dropping out, truancy, disrespect, and misconduct dominate many classrooms and campuses.

If schools did teach kids School Skills, what would it look like? Below is a quick glimpse of School Skills Training 101: How to Be a Student, the most important class that schools never offer.

Have you ever stopped to consider the massive number of skills kids are expected to have in order to become successful students? They must arrive on time, hear the homework assignment, bring required school supplies, raise their hands to be called on, maintain focus, and take tests and quizzes. That long list is just a fraction of the key skills students need to succeed, so you may wonder where do you begin to train kids to be students. You can start anywhere you want. Whether talk-outs or  disrespect or tardiness is your top concern, it's fine to start there. Ideally, there would be a formal game plan for Pre-K through Grade 12, so the training would be more systematic, but in the meantime, start with whatever skills are most critical to you to successfully teach. Here is an example of one school district's Pre-K through Grade 12 School Skills Training Curriculum plan.

MOTIVATION


Whenever I train teachers and principals, there often seems to be a bit of a sense of resignation about the apathy and disinterest many students evidence, almost a "there's nothing that can be done" reaction. While most educators may never have been offered extensive training to discover effective strategies to motivate very unmotivated students, powerful, compelling interventions do exist to turnaround the rampant apathy and disinterest. Stop and think about how different your students might be if they saw the tremendous value of education. Motivation– or the lack of– underlies almost everything you attempt to accomplish with students. Talking alone probably won't improve the problem. You must choose interventions that are lively and so attention-grabbing that they can compete with cell phones, video games, TV, movies, and all the other contemporary attractions that vie for your students' attention. motivational poster 143Just as many educators appear resigned to their students' lack of motivation, many also seem resigned to the negative attitudes that are
equally common. Like motivation, students' attitudes color every activity you attempt to do with them. Like motivation, if the students' attitudes were improved, that improvement would have positive impact on all aspects of education because the youngsters would be so transformed. Despite the huge impact of students' attitudes, few schools have any formal plan to address the negativity, and few educators have received any practical training to learn specific strategies to engender more positive outlooks. That omission from educator training is truly discouraging, because so many forceful, effective intervention strategies exist to help students have more positive attitudes about school and education. Yes, bad attitudes may be commonplace now, but they don't have to be commonplace tomorrow. Pictured above is just one intervention (Poster #143) from our collection of hundreds. These potent, unexpected strategies are especially designed to work with resistant, oppositional students, and to work when more conventional methods would fail. Obviously, no single intervention will reverse the negativity, but this sample strategy does provide a great example of the powerful attitude adjustment methods that exist but unfortunately, may not be in wide use.

HOW AND WHEN TO TEACH

Studies suggest that the typical teacher loses 22 minutes per hour to on-demand behavior management. That is a loss of several hours per day. School Skills Training instruction requires just minutes per day but can give you back so many of those lost 22 minutes per class period in return. Some teachers set aside a block of time each day, others take just 5 minutes at the start of each class. It doesn't matter how you structure the training, so long as you offer the training pro-actively. No longer are you vulnerable to students' misbehavior because you have thoroughly and systematically taught your youngsters to look, act, and sound like students. They can become veterans at managing the behaviors, attitudes, and motivation they've previously struggled with. It's your choice: You can continue to work with untrained, unmotivated students who evidence bad attitudes, or you can turn all that around with School Skills Training, and as an added bonus start to love your job again.

The U.S. education system is perpetually stuck, darting from trend to trend, while enmeshed in unhealthy, distracting politics and high-stakes testing. A common sense, real-world approach like School Skills Training could solve a lot of what's wrong with K-12 education, but since School Skills Training can't be described in a quick sound bite, isn't a new educational fad, isn't politically connected, and has nothing to do with testing, it probably doesn't have much of a chance of ever gaining widespread national notice. That shouldn't stop you from using School Skills Training to transform your classroom and school.

It could change your life, your classroom management, and the lives of your students.

School Skills Training means that you teach your youngsters how to be students, just like you teach your youngsters academic subject matter.

Your school district has a carefully planned curriculum for teaching academic content, but no curriculum at all to teach the foundation School Skills that youngsters need to take advantage of the academic offerings.

Even though all schools want students to be motivated, have a good attitude, be appropriately dressed, arrive on time, have class discussion skills, and complete assignments, few schools have any plan at all to teach students how to do all that.

Then, we wonder why there are so many classroom management problems in so many classrooms.

Here it is, the start of a new school year, and all around the country schools are expecting students to have basic School Skills that they've actually never been systematically taught.

That is why so many kids don't look, act, or sound like students. They haven't been taught.

If you are tired of the endless classroom management problems that gobble up a whopping 22 minutes of each 50 minute period of instruction, then be sure you develop and follow a School Skills Training game plan for transforming kids into prepared, motivated students with positive attitudes.

You wouldn't just talk about calculus because that doesn't teach students calculus.

When you just talk about the rules,
that doesn't teach students how to follow the rules.

Just talking about the rules is ineffective because so many youngsters don't have the
requisite needed skills to comply.

So, instead of just saying
poster203 "Dress appropriately" or "Don't miss class," provide specific instruction about what to wear, what not to wear, as well as attendance and punctuality.

Include skill training on key elements such as how often to wear dirty and stained clothes, how to be sure to have clean school clothes available, and so on.

Poster #203, pictured above, gives an unmistakable image of the problem behavior, and makes it tough for students to claim "But I didn't know what was considered saggy pants."

Poster #226, shown at left, can start the conversation about attendance. In the discussion, assist students to develop quantifiable guidelines, such as the number of times per class period to use the rest room during class, and how to plan to use the bathroom in between classes, and so on.

Stating the rules should always be just a small part of the process. To gain compliance with your rules, and have satisfactory classroom management, the main thrust must be to provide on-going instruction that gives students the skills they need to follow the rules.

You need to actually "sell" school to your students. That's right. To provide thorough

Here is the most overlooked solution to win education's "race to the top": Train kids to be successful students. It's the classroom management technique that makes sense and isn't just another passing fad.

Kids are not born instant students, magically knowing what to wear to school, how to interact with teachers, work hard, arrive on time, and be motivated.

Years ago, parents taught all that, but many families don't reliably prepare students in that manner any more. That means that many teachers are working with untrained, unmotivated, uninterested students, who act untrained, unmotivated, and uninterested. Since families no longer reliably provide this preparation, and schools don't offer it on a formal, comprehensive basis, it is unrealistic for educators to expect kids to have and use School Skills.

Without being formally and systematically taught all the specific School Skills they need, kids can no more just "know" how to be students, than they could just "know" geometry or spelling. For kids of any age to succeed as students, they must be provided training, and all the consequences in the world won't compensate for the lack of skills.

To expect kids to know how to be students without providing them any training, is no different than expecting kids to swim without providing them any training. Just as some youngsters might go down in the water, you see some youngsters going down in your school or agency.

To help more of your youngsters to stay afloat, you need to teach them the skills, motivation, and attitude they need to succeed in school.

So, make a resolution for the new year: Resolve to stop working with untrained students, and instead provide your students the School Skills training they need. You might spend the rest of your year working with trained, motivated, prepared students. That's the way to win your race to the top.

Train Kids to Be Students:

STEP 1– Motivate, Motivate, Motivate
 

grammar posterIf you were enrolled in a class called "Everything You Need to
Know About Funeral Insurance," you'd run from the class as fast as you could because you saw no relevance. Sadly, some of your students view your class in the same light.

The difference is that the content you offer is critical for survival. It is critical that you use innovative, effective techniques to motivate students to appreciate the value of your content area before you start to teach it.

Otherwise, those students may absorb about the same amount of information you would learn in a semester of Funeral Insurance class. Without motivating students before commencing instruction, your race to the top, can quickly become a race to the bottom.

Poster #216 (shown above) uses humor to slip by any resistance students have, and can begin to convince youngsters that learning grammar could have importance. This device works great as a poster, worksheet, or written on your marker board. You can buy it here, or make your own.

STEP 2– Skills, Skills, Skills
 

school rules poster 197Have you ever added up how much time you spend hassling unending School Skills problems instead of providing instruction? If you're typical, you lose a whopping 22 minutes of instruction time per hour hassling frustrating, nonstop problems like punctuality, attitude, participation, disruption, and not following the dress code.

What a waste of precious instruction time, yet that loss can be avoided if you teach School Skills prior to expecting them.

Shown above is Poster 197. It actually begins the process of teaching students how to follow your school's dress code policy. Use this item as a worksheet or poster, or discuss its content with students. However you use this technique, be sure you are teaching dress code skills in the same comprehensive way you teach academic skills.

Just stating expectations is not sufficient for successful academic instruction, and it's not sufficient for successful School Skills Training instruction either. Poster #197 is just a start; to teach students to follow the dress code, you have to teach them as thoroughly as you would teach any academic area. One quick intervention will not do the trick.

STEP 3– Attitude, Attitude, Attitude

Insurance class, what's your attitude looking like right about
now?

Pretty horrible, right?

The same is true for students who have now spent 4 months in school, an experience they find as useless as your Funeral Insurance class. Until you adjust the negative attitudes, your content instruction can just be "blah-blah-blah" to students who view you and your class as completely bogus.

Cut through the negative attitudes by convincing students of the tremendous value you are offering them. Since grads earn $329,000 more than everyone else, be sure to "wow"
students by telling them that.

Back-to-School Strategies That Build Success


It's back-to-school time. This issue is filled with terrific back-to-school interventions to stop classroom management problems before they start.

Our new back-to-school ideas are crafted to work with elementary, middle and high school students, and are great for special ed students too.

The back-to-school interventions included in this issue work so much better than just re-stating the school and classroom rules. These lively devices actually teach kids how to be prepared, motivated students. Best of all, these intervention tools prevent classroom management problems before they ever start.

 

A Back-to-School Intervention to Teach
Motivation for School
WILL WORK FOR ELECTRICITY

You can add audio effects as well. This is a great intervention for elementary school students who may not read once you add the audio element.

 

 

 

A Back-to-School Intervention to Teach
Motivation for School
STAY OR PAY

Teach students that dropouts can afford 1/2 the house, 1/2 the possessions, 1/2 the necessities, 1/2 the fun that grads can afford. Ask students if they would rather "Stay or Pay," meaning would they prefer to "stay" in school or "pay" forever for dropping out.

For elementary school students, use toy houses or paper houses to illustrate the concepts, and do the same for the other elements too. You can skip this addition for middle and high school students.

 

A Back-to-School Intervention to Teach
Appropriate Dress
WHAT NEVER TO WEAR TO SCHOOL

Stop hassling with students about their inappropriate attire. Instead of reminding your students about the rules, actually teach them the skills they need to comply with your standards.

Ask your class members to generate posters showing What Never to Wear to School, and be sure they include tiny skirts, teeny tank tops, slippers, pajama bottoms, and pants that are way to big.

Post their art work on the wall so it becomes a lasting, vivid, concrete reminder of your standards. For the rest of the school year, no student will ever be able to say "But, I didn't know we couldn't wear swim suits to class!"

Notice how this intervention can work even when parents don't teach their offspring about appropriate dress for school.

 

A Back-to-School Intervention to Teach
Discussion Skills
WHAT TO SAY WHEN…

Don't just expect students to figure out the nuances of being in a class discussion– teach them those skills instead. So, have the students devise responses to situations that they are likely to encounter in classroom discussions.

For example, have students identify and memorize what to say when…they don't know what to say; they don't want to participate; they don't understand the question, etc. Post their responses on the wall so students can use the information all year long.

You may be surprised how much bad behavior can be avoided using this simple intervention all school year.

FIND OUT NOW WHAT YOU'LL LEARN LATER

Students often see school as a waste of time. Show them that school is actually their key to survival.

To potently convey how difficult life will be without an education, give each student a page of text that is written in a foreign language that is unfamiliar. Offer each student a terrific prize for explaining what the page says. This will really motivate your class members to read the document, but of course, none will be able to.

Let your students vent about being very frustrated, feeling angry and incapable of completing the task. After the students have finished venting, note that this experience is similar to what life may be like without education.

These days, every teacher, every counselor, every social worker, every principal knows students who won't do their work. Some of these work refusers often fail to show up. When they do show up, they often say little, and some may be nearly mute. Some may not even make eye contact, or even look in your direction.

Typically, adults consider two options: pushing the child or backing off. All types of "pushing" can fail, whether rewards, consequences, pressure or logic are used. Backing off can't ever work because if you back off then you're not offering the child an education, or whatever your service is.

The world demands skills from every one of us. No exceptions are made for those who endured abuse or neglect, or have a good reason to seize up. Strategies to Help Work Refusers

 

It's Pain, Not a Game

Many work refusers face enormous challenges from severe family problems like violence or verbal abuse, to challenges like disabilities and emotional disorders. Work refusal can appear to be a game, but especially with victimized youngsters, it's not a game at all. Getting "stuck" is the only way they know to survive. It can keep them safe at home, and that survival mechanism comes in with them every day.

Strategy:
Few kids will ever say "I was beaten last night so math seems irrelevant. Can I skip the exam?" For distressed kids who don't wish to disclose the nature of their distress, simply allow them to say whether it's a "good work day" or "bad work day." How much work could you do after a beating? Deeply appreciative of accommodations, most of these traumatized students will work very hard on the days that they're able to.


You're a Life Line

You may be the only sane, sober adult some students know– a fact that you may want to keep in mind.

Strategy:
If you're a teacher, then you may live with on-going "testing mania," and other big pressures to produce results at school. It can be hard to remember that humanity is always more important than scores. Forget the humanity, you won't get good scores. Remember the humanity, you'll maximize your humans and their scores.

 

Tiny Increments

Traumatized kids have so little energy left for school: Surviving the beatings, homelessness, or neglect can demand all the child's resources.

Strategy:
Raise expectations in tiny increments. If a student says your goals are too easy, that's just right. Aim for lots of small successes rather than a big failure followed by seizing up and absences.


Understand: Work Refusal Isn't the Real Problem

Look beyond the work refusal to improve it. Work refusal is almost always a symptom of a bigger problem. It is not the cause. It is not the problem. You can't cure problems by focusing on symptoms, which are merely manifestations of the problem. Symptoms like work refusal are not the cause, they are the result. Focus on just the refusal, you will never get improvement. Focus on the refusal AND the causes, you can get improvement.

Strategy: Ask students why they don't work. When many say "I don't know," reply: "If you did know, what would it be?" This off- beat method can yield important answers. Be ready to arrange help for the serious issues students cite.

 

Listen for What You Don't Hear

Consider this true story as a way to understand your potential impact on vulnerable children who refuse to work: "Mom hasn't moved in three days. I'm worried," the first grader said when asked why he wouldn't work. Tragically, upon investigation, the boy's Mom had passed without any adult knowing. Looking back, would you want to have taken the time to ask, or would you be satisfied that you had only focused on getting the work done? Playwright Harold Pinter, who died recently, once said "The speech we hear is an indication of that which we don't hear." For shut-down, withdrawn work refusers, it is critical that you listen for "that which we don't hear."
