You wouldn't just talk about calculus because that doesn't teach students calculus.

When you just talk about the rules,
that doesn't teach students how to follow the rules.

Just talking about the rules is ineffective because so many youngsters don't have the
requisite needed skills to comply.

So, instead of just saying
poster203 "Dress appropriately" or "Don't miss class," provide specific instruction about what to wear, what not to wear, as well as attendance and punctuality.

Include skill training on key elements such as how often to wear dirty and stained clothes, how to be sure to have clean school clothes available, and so on.

Poster #203, pictured above, gives an unmistakable image of the problem behavior, and makes it tough for students to claim "But I didn't know what was considered saggy pants."

Poster #226, shown at left, can start the conversation about attendance. In the discussion, assist students to develop quantifiable guidelines, such as the number of times per class period to use the rest room during class, and how to plan to use the bathroom in between classes, and so on.

Stating the rules should always be just a small part of the process. To gain compliance with your rules, and have satisfactory classroom management, the main thrust must be to provide on-going instruction that gives students the skills they need to follow the rules.

This intervention begins to debunk students' beliefs that they'll never need education because they're going to become rock stars, models, or sports stars. Doesn't it frustrate you when students spend class time in the
bathroom?

Here is an unexpected way to improve that reality. This technique is so unusual, it may catch students off-balance, and accomplish more than conventional
approaches ever could.

Post this device on the wall, or make your own. It looks a bit
like a sign showing where the bathroom is. Students will be laughing when they read it. While they're laughing, they can't be oppositional so the message on the poster may have impact.

STUDENT ATTITUDE ADJUSTER


"I Don't Care About Anything"

students, but what if "The Universe" reached out directly to
turnaround these youngsters? This attention-grabbing intervention can be implemented in many ways, but perhaps the most effective way is to make a card or note that resembles Poster #237, shown at
right, and give it to your discouraged students. You can add personalized text if you wish.

This intervention can also be done verbally, or you could record the message. If you do use a recording, you can add sci-fi sound effects to make this strategy even more humorous and light.

Be sure to keep this activity light and don't let it get upsetting. Check with a mental health counselor for guidance if you aren't sure you can keep it fun, and take no risks using this device with vulnerable, upset, troubled or younger  students.

A good follow-up activity is to ask the student to make a list of all the good things "The Universe" might have in store for them if they were open to the possibilities. To order Poster #237, click here.

 

ATTITUDE ADJUSTER for ADULTS


"This is a Rough Time to Be a Teacher or
Counselor"
 

There is a tiny, little-known winery hidden on the Oregon coast. Inside, there are all the usual amenities one might expect to find in a winery, but instead of attempting to get you to open your wallet to buy wine, the owner attempts to get you to open your wallet to donate to orphaned children in Calcutta.

Where you might expect to see wine lists, you find  inspiration. In today's rough economy, it's understandable
that educators and counselors struggle to stay positive. You will be more effective evoking positive attitudes from your students if you are able to stay positive yourself.

All around the winery, there are pretty paper cards that should advertise the vineyard's newest bottles. Instead the cards feature a poem that the winery owner found on the wall of Mother Theresa's children's home in Calucutta. These inspirational words probably weren't written with teachers and youth workers in mind, but they could have been. An edited excerpt from the poem "Anyway" is below.

Innovative Classroom Management Techniques to

Here is the most overlooked solution to win education's "race to the top": Train kids to be successful students. It's the classroom management technique that makes sense and isn't just another passing fad.

Kids are not born instant students, magically knowing what to wear to school, how to interact with teachers, work hard, arrive on time, and be motivated.

Years ago, parents taught all that, but many families don't reliably prepare students in that manner any more. That means that many teachers are working with untrained, unmotivated, uninterested students, who act untrained, unmotivated, and uninterested. Since families no longer reliably provide this preparation, and schools don't offer it on a formal, comprehensive basis, it is unrealistic for educators to expect kids to have and use School Skills.

Without being formally and systematically taught all the specific School Skills they need, kids can no more just "know" how to be students, than they could just "know" geometry or spelling. For kids of any age to succeed as students, they must be provided training, and all the consequences in the world won't compensate for the lack of skills.

To expect kids to know how to be students without providing them any training, is no different than expecting kids to swim without providing them any training. Just as some youngsters might go down in the water, you see some youngsters going down in your school or agency.

To help more of your youngsters to stay afloat, you need to teach them the skills, motivation, and attitude they need to succeed in school.

So, make a resolution for the new year: Resolve to stop working with untrained students, and instead provide your students the School Skills training they need. You might spend the rest of your year working with trained, motivated, prepared students. That's the way to win your race to the top.
 

Improved Classroom Management Techniques


Train Kids to Be Students:
 

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUE
STEP 1– Motivate, Motivate, Motivate
 

grammar posterIf you were enrolled in a class called "Everything You Need to
Know About Funeral Insurance," you'd run from the class as fast as you could because you saw no relevance. Sadly, some of your students view your class in the same light.

The difference is that the content you offer is critical for survival. It is critical that you use innovative, effective techniques to motivate students to appreciate the value of your content area before you start to teach it.

Otherwise, those students may absorb about the same amount of information you would learn in a semester of Funeral Insurance class. Without motivating students before commencing instruction, your race to the top, can quickly become a race to the bottom.

Poster #216 (shown above) uses humor to slip by any resistance students have, and can begin to convince youngsters that learning grammar could have importance. This device works great as a poster, worksheet, or written on your marker board. You can buy it here, or make your own.

 

Train Kids to Be Students:
 

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUE
STEP 2– Skills, Skills, Skills
 

school rules poster 197Have you ever added up how much time you spend hassling unending School Skills problems instead of providing instruction? If you're typical, you lose a whopping 22 minutes of instruction time per hour hassling frustrating, nonstop problems like punctuality, attitude, participation, disruption, and not following the dress code.

What a waste of precious instruction time, yet that loss can be avoided if you teach School Skills prior to expecting them.

Shown above is Poster 197. It actually begins the process of teaching students how to follow your school's dress code policy. Use this item as a worksheet or poster, or discuss its content with students. However you use this technique, be sure you are teaching dress code skills in the same comprehensive way you teach academic skills.

Just stating expectations is not sufficient for successful academic instruction, and it's not sufficient for successful School Skills Training instruction either. Poster #197 is just a start; to teach students to follow the dress code, you have to teach them as thoroughly as you would teach any academic area. One quick intervention will not do the trick.

STEP 3– Attitude, Attitude, Attitude

Insurance class, what's your attitude looking like right about
now?

Pretty horrible, right?

The same is true for students who have now spent 4 months in school, an experience they find as useless as your Funeral Insurance class. Until you adjust the negative attitudes, your content instruction can just be "blah-blah-blah" to students who view you and your class as completely bogus.

Cut through the negative attitudes by convincing students of the tremendous value you are offering them. Since grads earn $329,000 more than everyone else, be sure to "wow"
students by telling them that.

Poster 168, shown above, illustrates the point. You can use the phrase pictured on the poster, or make your own. Notice that the diploma on the poster is actually made of money. That might make an excellent discussion starter. Purchase Poster #168 here.

Here's the motivational strategy– but remember this intervention works really well in lots of different ways– as a sign, poster, card, name tag, door hanger, t-shirt, or even as a note on your board.

Write on the sign, poster, or whatever modality you choose: "Ask me how to earn $329,000." (That is how much more students will earn if they get a high school dipoma.)

You Have the Power

Here are some inspiring words to urge your students to finish school. These words could be on a poster on your wall, or they can be used verbally. These words are intended for use with students who are in crisis, using substances, self-destructive, or involved in self-harming behaviors.

Say: "The same power that you have to destroy yourself, you have to save yourself." The words are attributed to Les Paul, the legendary musician, who overcame enormous difficulty to reach his dreams. A good follow-up activity: ask students to read about Les Paul's determination.


It's Your Choice: Twice the Pain or Twice the Gain?

Hopefully you've already been teaching your students that being a high school dropout is like starting a race miles behind everyone else. As we've told you in past issues of this blog, dropouts are the last hired and the first fired. When economics are rough like right now, dropouts suffer disproportionately.

Here is just one example that makes a great motivational strategy. The higher the education level, the lower the unemployment rate. That may happen because grads have more education and skills to fall back on. How disproportionate does it get? Dropouts' unemployment is about twice that of peers who graduate– and just one more of a million reasons to finish school.

 

There's No "Q" in Classroom

This intervention would work best as a poster on your wall. Write "There's no QUIT in this classroom. How can I help you succeed?"

Next, dialogue with students about how you can assist them throughout this school year– even when they feel like quitting because a task is hard, or they are faced with other kinds of problems.

This is a perfect intervention for work refusers. Work refusers tend to be a very hot topic in our live workshops. We spend hours on them. If you can't attend a live inservice course with us, hopefully this intervention will help a bit.

This is such a great idea. This strategy is one of the terrific ideas suggested by Matthew from LAUSD.

Staff at his site are working to create celebrity wake-up calls for students. It fits L.A. perfectly and you can easily make it fit your part of the world. Get local or national celebrities to record wake-up calls for your students and start their day with a bang.

No one sleeps through a call from a big name star. Their eyes will be wide open.

 

Put Your Doors to Work

At LAUSD, they don't just work their walls, they even work their doors too.

They have created door hangers that they leave on the homes of absent students. We liked that idea so much that we created door hangers for the classroom (pictured above).

As you can see, the door hangers focus on instruction and testing, and are very motivational. You can make your own by downloading a blank outline of a door hanger image. That's how we made our versions.

Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates

This behavior management method is like nothing you've ever seen before.

They put really successful athletes on the cover of a box of Wheaties, the Breakfast of Champions. Have your students put themselves on the cover of "Succeedies: Breakfast of Graduates."

To do this, purchase boxes of Wheaties and have your students alter them, or provide them the art supplies to create mock-ups.

Use a digital camera, have students take head shots then transfer them to your computer. Next, print the pictures and have students add them to the cereal boxes.

This activity is a lot of fun and potentially inspirational. Plus, it's hard to stay sour and negative about school when you are involved in a fun project like this.

 

Put Your Shirt to Work

In this issue, we've already discussed putting your walls and doors to work. If you're a teacher, now it's time to put your clothing to work too.

You're going to love this unusual behavior management strategy.

Create buttons or stickers that say "Call Me Banker" or "Don't Call Me Teacher" and attach to your shirt.

Inevitably, students will ask why your button or sticker makes such a bogus claim. Reply by noting that since graduates earn $329,000 more than dropouts, you prefer to be called "Banker."

 

iPod Planet

This is one of my favorite student behavior management interventions ever.

Like many people who work with children and adolescents, you probably don't know which you hate more: iPods in class or cell phones in class.

Instead of waging a constant battle against distracting technology, prevent problems before they start.

First, have students make a list of The Worst Places to Use Your iPod or The Worst Places to Use Your Cell Phone. Include suggestions like "during surgery" and "at church." Be sure to include your site on the list.

Post the lists on the wall, then warn students that they will face unimaginable consequences if they use their iPod or phone in class. Be sure to convey this message using humor because students will face humorous sanctions.

Students will be required to switch to an obsolete version of the offending device for the rest of the class or day. So the iPod will be traded for a cassette player or clunky 8 track tape player. The cell phone will be traded for a dial phone.

The trades should be done using lots of humor to ensure that you avoid the usual power struggles that iPods and cell phones can normally cause.

If you don't have ancient cassette players and phones at home, you can pick them up inexpensively in thrift shops. Students are often intrigued to use low tech technology like dial phones that they may not have seen or heard of before; that intrigue can even distract them from arguing.

Ultimately, students who use prohibited devices will come to expect that they will have to trade their cute little iPod for a dusty, over-sized record player.

Poster 147 is intended just for girls, although you can use it with boys if you wish. It's also a great reminder to use gender-proficient interventions when needed. You're student behavior will definitely improve as a result.

This provocative poster is the perfect conversation-starter for girls' counseling groups, health classes, contemporary issues classes, and living skills courses.

It also works well with individual students. It tackles a tough problem area: body image. It also raises issues of weight, self-image, beauty, culture and societal expectations of girls.

This student behavior intervention will start important conversations and provoke insights when mere words and generic methods can't.

I'll Do It Someday

If you had a nickel for every time a youngster told you that they will do what you ask…someday.

This is a light, fun student behavior management intervention.

The next time you hear "someday" in answer to a request to a student, escort the student to your calendar and say: "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Where's Someday?"

Your goal is to teach students that someday doesn't exist.

 

Interventions for Drama Queens– and Kings

You don't work in a theater, but you are surrounded by drama. If you are tired of the theatrics at your school or agency, this very simple behavior intervention can become your new mantra.

Teach your students: "No Extreme Emotions." If you prefer to say it more positively, "Moderate Emotions Only."

If you work with adolescents, it may seem like you are saying "cool it" to a raging fire, but this saying can help. It is uncomfortable for youngsters to be in perpetual chaos, anger, anxiety, or distress.

Market "No Extreme Emotions" as a way out of the constant discomfort. Remember that children and teens don't necessarily realize that their conduct is out of the norm so teach them "Drama only belongs in theaters."

Consider having students make posters that illustrate this caption: More School, Less Drama.
 

The Recession or Depression? Game

There is an old saying about bad economic times: It's a recession when other people lose their jobs. It's a depression when you lose your job.

Teach your students about the terms "recession" and "depression," then help them determine if they are prepared to keep regularly occurring, ordinary recessions from becoming disastrous depressions.

Play the "Recession or Depression?" game. Divide students into two groups then ask each group to determine the truth about what can happen to people during economic downturns.

Reward correct answers by giving students play money. Penalize wrong answers by taking away money, or having the group "go into debt."

The purpose of using the play money is to make the game more concrete and real than you can achieve just using verbiage.

Ask students to determine which of the following facts are true. (All are true.)

-No diploma? You double your chances of
   being unemployed
-Dropouts are the first fired, last hired
-Graduates often send the layoff notices that
   everyone else opens
-Graduates can do and understand more than everyone
   else so they can do better than everyone even when
   the economy does worse
-Jobs that don't require a diploma are disappearing
-In bad economic times, there are more people than jobs
   so grads take the jobs dropouts could otherwise
   have gotten

There was definitely a theme to many of our Fall '07 workshops.

I'm the trainer for the live Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshops, Ruth Herman Wells, M.S.

In our live behavior and classroom management workshops, many of you continued to emphasize that your classroom and school have become seriously out-of-control.

To start off the new year, it only makes sense to give our top tips to repair serious problems at your school or agency.

Here are our initial suggestions for what to do to improve problematic classroom management enough to salvage a school year that has been unusually difficult or dangerous.

Start Over

Many professionals do not realize that it is always easier to stop the problematic class than to salvage it.

No, you don't have to board up your classroom and hang a "Closed" sign on the door, but understand that it is much harder to fix a broken class than to just start over.

To start over, you can declare the old class as done, and begin fresh in every possible regard. Scrap the rules and make new ones. Rearrange your furniture, develop a new seating plan, and even consider renaming your class. It will also be important to discuss the problems with the class, and to work with your students to make this new venture work better.

However, these initial changes will not be enough. You have to be different and teach differently. It's way past time to understand that "same-old-same-old" methods will not magically start working.

It may be time to realize that you must upgrade your skills and methods for working with out-of-control youth. Some specific suggestions to begin those upgrades are below.

It's Not Just About Relationships Anymore

You may really struggle to manage your most misbehaved students if you use relationship-based approaches with all of them.

While we love relationship-based methods with most students, youngsters are not one-method-fits-all creatures. Relationship-based methods (including character ed, values clarification, trust-building, and praise) will fail with the most unmanageable students, conduct disorders (CDs).

This blog's second and third issues gave you an introduction to conduct disorders. (Click the menu at the top of the page to view those Introductory blog issues.)

Those issues alerted you to avoid most relationship-based and conventional approaches with CDs. If you use just one style of behavior control methods with all your students, you probably have already discovered that "nothing works" to control your class.

Here are some resources that show you methods that will work far better.

The bottom line: Until you learn about conduct disorders, regaining control may remain impossible.
 

Become a Fearless Manager

You know the teachers– the ones who can manage almost any class or group.

No one can simply hand you techniques and make you one of those teachers. Even the most updated methods can't hide any fear or worry you may have. Our strategies will help, but they won't alleviate the need to become one of those fearless managers who know that they can manage any class, no matter how difficult.

The truth is that students have amazing radar. They read us adults like open comic books. If part of you is really worried about successfully controlling a group, that fear becomes like neon, and everything else you do is reduced to a whisper.

You need to develop that internal fortitude and certainty that you can manage even the most unmanageable group. To gain that, we suggest watching the true pros of class and group management.

We especially recommend that you find someone with a similar personality and style. Juvenile court and corrections staff, vice-principals, alternative ed teachers, and special ed teachers often provide some of the best models because they have honed their skills with the toughest students.

 

Students Wanted, No Skills Required

Since most schools have no formal curriculum to train kids how to be students, you are expecting students to have skills they may never have been taught.

That's like expecting students to know how to swim even though they've never been taught.

You have to actually teach the school behavior skills that you want students to use in your classroom. Otherwise, you set rules that many students are untrained and unprepared to follow.

You absolutely must teach all the school skills that students need. A few of the most important on a long list include: respect for teachers, how to be part of a class discussion, what words to use, how often to talk out during class, how to get help from teachers, and how to interact with other students.

Be sure you work on students' motivation too. Skill training alone isn't enough. You must convince students that school is incredibly important.

Need dynamic ways to do that? Use the motivational interventions pictured on our posters. You don't have to buy the posters; just read the ideas and use them.

 

Set Behavior Standards and Ensure Compliance

You can not permit the kind of behavior problems that have been occurring at some sites this school year. Some of the participants in our workshops  have described students who are inappropriately touching teachers, openly defying teachers, and entering and leaving classrooms at will.

You can not allow the standards for behavior to slide. There is no way back if you do. Right from the very start, you must have high expectations and compel your students to live up to those standards.

We have heard from teachers who just keep teaching while students refuse to quiet down or pay attention. Imagine the chaos if other compliance-based settings operated in such a manner. For example, would there be any order in a grocery store if the clerk just handed you your groceries after you announce that you'll be taking your groceries but not paying?

You are the "brakes" for out-of-control students. When you don't provide acting-out students with help to stop misbehavior, there is nothing to slow them down.

You must stop instruction and address misconduct. Ideally, you will get to the point where you can prevent disruption before it starts. For now, if you are someone who does need to repair a "broken" school year, be sure to promptly acknowledge and effectively address misbehavior. The longer you wait, the worse it will get.

Stop Yelling at Students:
No-Scream Classroom Management Strategies Offer Improved Methods

In our workshops, in our email, and on the phone, we have been hearing the same complaint over and over and over: "I can't scream loud enough and long enough to control my class."

In the nearly 20 years that Youth Change has been a national resource for teachers and counselors with troubled students, we have never been so inundated with inquiries about how to scream louder and longer to get back in control.

My name is Ruth Herman Wells, M.S. O'm the Director of Youth Change Workshops. I'm also the trainer for Youth Change's live and online workshops.

What would you think if your son or daughter's teacher managed by screaming?

You would be appalled and demand the screaming stop. If you are one of the professionals who is screaming at kids, you need to remember that you are screaming at someone's son, someone's daughter.

If you wouldn't want your offspring to be yelled at, then you shouldn't be yelling at someone else's children.

When my daughter Meagan was told by her middle school music teacher that Meg was "a loser" and would be "a failure in high school," I confronted the teacher. The teacher replied "Meagan can take it."

It doesn't matter if students "can take it." Screaming at students is abuse, and abuse can cost you your job, your self-respect, and your career. Even more importantly, no student should have to "take it."

Think about this next sentence: You have no way of knowing if you are screaming at a child who was beaten or incested last night. Now, how do you feel about the screaming?

Yelling is destructive and always inappropriate– unless you are yelling "Go Team" at a football game, or screaming "Stop" because a student is about to run in front of a bus.

Further, yelling is not acceptable in most work settings, and have you ever noticed that when you yell at students, you are using behaviors that you won't permit them to use?

Ultimately, your job is to prepare students for the real work place– and screaming isn't permitted there.

One more point: You have an obligation to report screaming if you hear it. There aren't exceptions given if it will be difficult or uncomfortable to report. Your first obligation is to your students not your comfort.

Finally, yelling doesn't work anyway. With that in mind, please consider these alternatives to screaming:

Anticipate and Avoid Predictable Problems

Many of the professionals who have been contacting us to say that screaming isn't working, have noted that they are struggling with the same misbehavior over and over and over.

If you know that students predictably struggle in a given area, then use that information to prevent it from repeating endlessly. That is how you would manage a chronic academic concern, and that is how you must manage behavioral problems.

Instead of continuing to have problems with inappropriate items coming into your site, train  your students on what to bring and wear.

If you use humor, students may actually absorb far more information. A non-confrontational approach will also result in much more success than an antagonistic one.

That is why this type of intervention can succeed when screaming has failed. Here's a very fun intervention to use. Have students name occupations, then list those jobs in a column on the board, Next, have students list items that shouldn't come to work for those particular jobs.

Encourage humorous contributions like a chef bringing worms to work at a restaurant. Now that students are relaxed and at ease, discuss silly items not to bring to your site, and the results that can occur.

Students can make a master list of Items Not to Bring to School. Our Poster #62 provides a visual example if you need ideas to get your group started.
 

Identify, Prioritize Then Teach Missing Skills

You would never yell at a student who lacked math skills. Yelling would not help the youngster gain math skills.

Similarly, yelling at students who lack specific classroom behavior skills will not help youngsters gain those missing skills.

In place of yelling, consider teaching the missing skills.

Where to start? Pick the one problem that interferes the most with your classroom management. Once that skill is mastered, move onto the next missing skill, and so on.

Example Strategy:
Teach students how to properly manage transition times. For example, perhaps students need to rehearse walking into the room without sounding like a herd of buffalo.

Once they can enter "quieter than a herd of buffalo," you can tell them that they've mastered the skill. Next, offer occasional rewards for good transitioning, especially for punctuality and quickly quieting down.

Teachers can give the first five students who are quiet and ready to work, passes to get out of class a few minutes early. A counselor can bring a pack of gum and give the five sticks out to the first five youngsters who are quiet and ready to work.

Be sure to teach the skills before expecting them though, and remember, re-stating the rules isn't teaching skills.

 

The Most Important, Fastest Fix

Teacher and counselor training still tends to be heavily theoretical instead of practical, and still tends to prepare professionals to work with compliant, willing students.

You may find yourself with few compliant and willing, and many non-compliant and unwilling. If your training hasn't given you tools for the non-compliant and unwilling, you need to update your skills to equip you to work with extremely acting-out youngsters, especially conduct disorders.

Until you do, nothing– that's right– nothing will substitute, especially not yelling. Conduct disorders are cagey, manipulative, smart, and devoted to playing you.

When you yell, they feel like they own you, that they are the boss of you. When you yell at conduct disorders, you have made a bad situation far worse.

We get many effusive emails and letters from teachers, vice-principals, counselors, and social workers saying that learning about conduct disorders "opened their eyes," to quote one principal. If you truly want the problems to stop, learn about your most misbehaved students, your conduct disorders.

Example Strategy:
Conduct disorders care about only one thing. Do you know what it is? If you don't, classroom and group management will remain enormously problematic.

They care about only Me-Me-Me-Me. Every intervention you use with a conduct disorder must center on what the student loses by misbehavior or gains by good behavior.

Do not heed advice that others may give that you should just ignore this most unmanageable of all youngsters. Conduct disorders need you to be their "brakes". When you abandon or can't play that role, that student has all the control of a speeding car with no way to stop.

Yelling at this youngster has the same results as yelling at a speeding car. Upgrading your skills doesn't have to be time-consuming or hard. It's no fun to work with kids who know it all already. Some of these youngsters can be quite arrogant and disdainful. Others will convey a sense of superiority that serves to effectively isolate them from their peers. Many adolescents routinely believe they know more than adults, so if you work with teens, you may need every one of the approaches listed below.

These unexpected classroom management interventions are some of the methods that my Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth Workshop participants love the most. These novel classroom management intervention methods can moderate the amount of time you have to spend each day convincing students that they don't know it all already. These lively interventions may actually help some of your know-it-all students realize that they might still have something to learn from you and your site.

The Email Hoax That Isn't

Some students believe that they know all there is to know about…everything. Here is a fun way to show them that none of us know it all. You get an email from a friend saying that they found lost money for you, and all you have to do is go on-line to get it. What do you do? Some of your "slicker" students may say that this is a con, and often it would be, but this time it isn't. There are legitimate sites on the web where people can search to see if they have unclaimed money. The friend went to one of these sites and input the student's name, and actually discovered a bank account that the student had opened and forgotten. Without any fees, the student will be able to claim the money by visiting that web site. (Based on the answer you get from your students, you can play this one either way as a hoax or valid, as most times this type of email would be a hoax.)
 

The Dictionary Game

Some youngsters act like they are way above their peers, and the adults too. They may speak in esoteric terms and appear snobbish. Here's a fun way to put everyone on the same level. It's called The Dictionary Game.

Ask one student to find a big word in the dictionary and write it on the board. Next, ask everyone to make up definitions for the term, and to write them on slips of paper. The student who knows the real definition should write the correct answer on a slip. The slips are collected and read, then the group guesses at what the word really means, then the true meaning is revealed.

At the end of the game, all class members will know lots of big words and definitions, putting them more on par with the elitist student. This game may also help some of these youth who believe they know it all, to recognize that they don't when they fail to correctly identify the actual definition for many of the terms.
 

Let's Get Ready to Humble

Are your taxes done? April 15 is just a couple months away. For all those students who believe they know it all, bring them your tax forms (or simulated ones), and let them complete your taxes. It can be a humbling experience. Your students may be wishing they had focused more in math class, or absorbed more about reading comprehension as they untangle and interpret IRS code.
 

Messages on the Door

Some youngsters act like they are ready now to just be on their own, that they don't need your site. Offer these students an apartment, then ask them to manage the messages on the door to the apartment. Use messages like this note from the apartment manager: "We have found another tenant for your apartment. You must move out by the end of the week."

Unless your students know tenant law, they may not know how to handle this situation, or the other problems that show up as messages on their door. When they fail to successfully manage all the situations, you can note that even when the youngster is given an apartment, she may still need the education and help that your site offers.

Ask your students who already know "everything," to manage your mail. Include mail that says you've won a trip to The Bahamas (if you pay a $800 fee); official-looking, but bogus hospital bills; and enticing record club offers for free items that require you to buy only 22 more items in the next month. You can substitute email spam for junk mail if you prefer.

For a follow-up intervention, use the phrase shown on our Poster #168 to highlight a key monetary benefit of staying in school and getting an education and a diploma.
 

Your Net Knowledge

The internet has provided creative, new ways for all of us to learn that perhaps we don't know it all. Ask your students to solve this: You receive an email saying that you have a virus that will wipe out your computer unless you delete one file right away. What do you do? Well, the wrong answer is to say you will delete the file. This time it is a hoax, and you can have some serious repair work to do if you delete that file. That file was something that you actually need to run your computer. (This is another intervention that you can play either way– as a hoax or not, depending on which you prefer.)
 

Are You Web Wise?

You receive a notice from your bank saying that they are going to now charge you a lot for mailing you the statements for your checking account. They will be free on-line in PDF format. Every job you try to apply for, will only give out applications on-line via PDF. Describe what you need to do to read or print PDF documents. Computer class could have helped, but the answer is that you download a plug-in that is free, and then view the document via the free software. Most sites that use PDF, have a link to the download available. If necessary, substitute other file formats for more web-savvy students.

For very savvy students, make a compelling challenge by testing their knowledge about backward compatibility. Pose challenges involving outmoded technology (like DOS, floppy disks or dot matrix printers, typewriters, for example) that can still be in use in some companies, industries and businesses.
