Yes, sadly, we all know that there’s no magic answers when it comes to getting students to behave and follow the rules, but motivation just may be the fastest and best overlooked answer. Pictured at right is a bad behavior intervention that is very potent, and, even better, you can use it in a variety of ways. This is our Poster #724 but the best use of this device is to create a real version of that wheel that is pictured and have students play Wheel of Misfortune, where they spin to see what life challenges they may face as adults when life strikes. The wheel has bad breaks like “lose wallet,” “flood,” and “sick dog.” For each spin, as part of a class discussion, students can detail how a lack of education and skills could make the challenge even harder to deal with.

You can follow this game with a Wheel of Better Fortune, and in this version, students can describe how having education and skills can have them ready to conquer each incident of adversity. You are essentially using a game format to market and re-brand school and education as critical to surviving as an adult. Using this type of distracting format makes it difficult for students to maintain their oppositional behavior and contrary nature. When they get caught up in the game and discussion, your message about the incredible value of school and education may sink in a lot more than words could ever do. This type of modality will deliver your message infinitely faster than using mere verbiage that students can easily ignore or dismiss.

Motivation has the power to change everything, including and especially students’ behavior. Once students are more convinced of the enormous, lifetime value of school, their behavior can start to shift. Of course, you still need to teach the behavior skills that you want your students to have, but motivation makes a terrific first step towards less back-to-school bad behavior.

 

Take Repeat Behavior Problems Off Repeat

back-to-school successIt seems sometimes that the same kids are having the same bad behavior problems starting with back-to-school and well beyond. If you can reduce the repetitive problems, that can really make a dent in the amount of student behavioral issues you have to cope with each hour. So, for students who repeat problem behaviors and dig in their heels to stand behind their mistakes, we show you our Poster #740. You don’t need to buy the poster, but you will want to start using the phrase and concepts shown on this poster. The poster says: The First Rule of Holes: When You’re in One, Stop Digging. This phrase can introduce the idea that stopping bad behavior sooner is a success– versus continuing to persist in problem conduct. You can actually teach students that by stopping sooner, they are making valuable progress towards managing their acting-out issues. Students rarely just stop entrenched behavior problems. Any progress towards improvement is usually a very much up and down pattern.

By acknowledging and praising stopping bad behavior sooner, you are helping break the cycle that often is the source of the bad conduct in the first place. The cycle tends to look like this: The student uses problem behavior and is confronted. The student feels bad about having been caught and perhaps also feels bad that they misbehaved. Feeling bad creates the perfect condition to misbehave. It’s similar to you and that cake in the refrigerator. You ate one big piece and felt terrible about it. So, what did you do? Feeling awful about your over-consumption, you figure you may as well have another piece. Welcome to the First Rule of Holes. It works the same for us adults as it does for your students.

Feelings cause behavior. Feelings like frustration, hopelessness, discouragement and self-hatred can help create the perfect storm because they are the spark that ignites the behavior problems that you then have to manage. By helping students cope with or moderate their feelings, you dramatically lessen the fuel for the next meltdown or big behavior problem. One way to temper outbursts that stem from discouragement is to help students understand that they may not be as big failures as they feel they are. So many students are seriously down on themselves whether they voice it or not. Certainly, being unhappy with yourself predisposes a child to use problem behavior. Poster #551 gives you six examples to use to show students that most of the people who are big successes in life, first faced and overcame challenges that are similar to their own. Enlarge the picture to better read the details on the poster. You can also check out another similar poster, Poster #537, to see six more examples you can use to start a class discussion. By showing your students that their ups and downs are just like those of highly successful people, you remove a lot of the troubling feelings that contribute to behavioral issues.

I will never understand why adults allow chronic behavior problems to continue. For example, many teachers can struggle to get all their students to settle in at the start of class. They can spend minutes saying “Okay, settle down,” “Get in your seats” and “Stop talking please.” Instead, these same teachers could use structure to solve the problem before it happened. Poster #252 shows you one example of structure that transforms the problems at the start of class into no problems at the start of class.

Beginning with a high five clap, students join the teacher at the start of class by making motions that show they have two eyes watching, two ears listening and one mouth shut. This structure replaces the pleas for seats and quiet. For older grades, a simple rhythmic clap sequence can perform the same magic. I have seen educators at the start of an assembly, instantly quiet hundreds of noisy students without saying a single word. They simply initiate the clap sequence and instantly have perfect quiet. Why would anyone continue to beg for quiet when they can clap and instantly get it?

Structure is the solution for many chronic problems. Getting quiet at the start of class is just one example of how structure can solve it all. Structure also can help solve problems with hallway behavior, talk outs, attendance, verbiage, discussion skills– and almost any other chronic problem you face this school year.

#1. Silly Classroom Management Idea
       for Sensitive Topics

fast classroom management strategiesIf you know a topic is loaded with tension and emotion, that’s the perfect time to employ humor. The human brain has trouble holding two conflicting emotions at once so what typically happens is that the student will grin or laugh before the negativity kicks in. That brief moment of understanding the silly sign or poster, puts you one small step closer to perhaps ultimately changing attitudes for the better. Racism is one of the toughest issues to tackle because students may already have entrenched built-in bias from home or their community. That makes a silly approach much smarter than a more straight-forward one. You don’t have to buy Poster #668. Instead of buying it, wait for a time when you need a creative consequence for a creative student. Instead of giving a traditional consequence, have the student make a silly poster similar to Poster #668 that is pictured at right.  If you wish, you can print or display the picture of that poster for use as inspiration for your student.

#2. Silly Classroom Management Idea
       Help Students Follow the Rules

fast classroom management helpYou don’t have to spend your entire school year reminding students to follow your classroom and school rules. Here is a very fun and silly classroom management idea that tends to reduce the amount of reminders and sanctions you have to give because your students “didn’t know the rules” or “forgot.” Students will normally learn infinitely faster from an enjoyable game than from another lecture or stern reminder. This game is fun and even better, it provides a fast and effective way to help students remember and follow classroom and schools rules and policies. It’s called Classroom Excuses Bingo. To use this intervention, simply create a bingo card (or cards), and replace the letters and numbers typically found on a Bingo card with the excuses you hear from your students. You may want to have a few fun prizes to the winner of Classroom Excuses Bingo to ramp up involvement and interest to the maximum possible. Alternatively, ask students to design the Classroom Excuses Bingo cards. That task would make a wonderful alternative consequence for any student who has broken a rule or policy. #3. Silly Classroom Management Idea
       Build Motivation for School and Education

classroom management ideaIn our workshop that is coming to Seattle in a couple weeks, we will spend hours giving creative, surprising and fun motivational methods for the most unmotivated students. One of our favorites is pictured at right. It looks like a lottery ticket but the text has been redone to make a complete eduction the ultimate prize. You can see this example enlarged; it’s our Poster #496. You can use a picture of Poster #496 as an example for students to make their own lottery tickets that promote education, or, you can discuss the poster as shown. Either way, you are going to be practically “sneaking” your motivational message into your students’ brains. Information presented in silly ways is just so much faster and easier to send and receive. You will see that for yourself once you try some of our silly classroom management ideas with your students. Plus, a side benefit is that it isn’t just more fun for students. Most teachers would much rather teach a silly lesson than have to give another lecture or consequence for some classroom issue.

#4. Silly Classroom Management Idea
       Address Cultural and Gender Norms

K-12 classroom ideasCultural norms and gender expectations are not normally very easy to rapidly change or improve. Many girls see STEM courses as “too hard” or “not for girls,” but STEM skills are likely to be the most in demand in the future. Lacking those skills will likely be a serious deficit. Possessing those skills will likely be a major asset as STEM careers typically pay more than many of the occupations viewed as “for girls.” This idea is perfect to chip away at the restrictiveness of gender and cultural norms that many girls may follow– probably without even realizing. The image at right is Poster #413. There are at least two ways to use this silly poster to start to change female students’ resistance to STEM classes. First, you can print a picture of the poster and use it as a discussion-starter. A second idea is to ask your students to make their own version of Clamor Magazine. This task can work really well to effect change because to make their creations, girls must be able to identify the restrictiveness of cultural and gender norms and their impact on assumptions and thinking. Having to create something similar to the example poster forces students to think differently than normal. That’s a great first step to help female students move away from some of the cultural or gender norms that may be holding them back from giving STEM classes more of a chance, and a bigger effort.

#5. Silly Classroom Management Idea
       Reduce Chronic Peer Problems

classroom management ideaIt’s spring. You know what that means: hormone-poisoned students who are more touchy-feely than you or your school wish. Instead of having to issue frequent reminders about your standards for contact, consider turning your classroom or school into a “No Cuddle Zone” and post appropriate signage. Now you have wall signs doing the heavy lifting 24/7, perhaps freeing you up to do more teaching and less reminding. An example wall sign is shown at right. It is our Poster #121. There is no need to buy the poster, just have one of your creative students whip up a few versions of their own. Creating No Cuddle Zone wall signs will also make a creative consequence for students who use problem contact in your No Cuddle Zone. The signs and the name make it difficult for students to say that they didn’t know that they were not supposed to engage in this type of behavior in school or class. The signs and the name tend to annihilate many of the excuses you hear all the time– and that’s a great result. So, stop battling students’ hormones this spring by employing some fun ideas to help them remember your class and school’s expectations. By incorporating some of these unusual, fun ideas into your classroom, maybe this spring, your students will be better prepared to focus more on the three Rs and less on PDA.

While you don’t necessarily want to discourage students from high level goals, they need to know the odds on achieving those goals, and maintaining their success. To teach them about the real odds of making it as a pro sports star, have them research the numbers. For example, only 1 in 150,000 guys will make it into the NBA. To teach them about the real odds of maintaining their success as a pro sports star, help them discover the real tasks that professional players actually do– and the real skills they need to do those tasks. Our brand new Poster #716 provides an example of how you could structure this motivational technique for use with your students. Similar to the poster, create two columns on your board then have students research sport stars for “What They Really Do” and the “Skills Needed.” Write students’ answers in the columns and discuss. Students will discover that becoming and staying a pro sports star takes a lot of education and skills. A good follow-up motivational technique: Have students research and discuss the average career length of sports stars in different fields. They may be surprised to discover that some pro athletes have very brief career due to concerns like age, injury, performance and behavior.

 

Show Education as Key to Winning

Make the realities of professional sports come alive by involving students in this motivational intervention technique. Assemble the types of documents and other items that pro sports stars may encounter. The items can include things like: the pro sport team’s contract to sign up their players, a sports agent contract, a lawyer contract, a sports publicist contract, an accountant contract, an assistants’ job application, tax forms, press releases, interview questions, and so on. You can use documents found on the internet, or, you can create mock-ups. Be sure the documents are complex, hard-to-read, have very small type, and a hard-to-read font. To ensure that your message hits a home run, select at least some items that would likely be difficult for even a well-educated adult to understand. Ask students to read and interpret the documents. When they struggle, you can help them discover that school can help.

If you are still expecting students to arrive with the skills they need to be successful, properly behaved students, you may have fallen behind the times. Yes, moms and dads used to reliably teach their offspring manners, civilized behavior, compliance skills, respect and so forth. These days, however, we can’t always count on parents to have taught their children to have the minimum behavior needed in your classroom and throughout the school. If you have tried to improve student conduct by setting rules and consequences, you probably have already discovered that quite often, rules and consequences don’t get the job done. While rules and consequences are essential, they are not nearly enough. If rules and consequences could get the job done, then I could require you to speak Swedish or face grave sanctions, and you would still be utterly unable to speak Swedish. Most of us have difficulty when expected to perform behaviors that no one has taught us. So, if you are serious about not wanting any more behavior management problems, then take the time to teach your students the exact skills they are not performing satisfactorily. Typically, those skills will include punctuality, hand raising, talking one at a time, compliance, chair sitting, managing school supplies and property, what to wear to school, what to bring to school, and so on. Your students’ classroom behavior management problems can quickly start to seem overwhelming. The volume and seriousness of the problems can seem substantial. You need an easy-to-implement game plan and here it is. First, start by writing down all the classroom management issues that you see. Second, prioritize the list. For the most part, there is no right way to prioritize beyond placing the issues that are most concerning to you at the top of the list. However, safety issues always get top rankings.  Now that you have your list sorted, you are ready to move forward. Few teachers have ever taken a class called Motivate the Most Unmotivated Students, but most teachers probably wish they had. Typically, many teachers see a plethora of unmotivated students when they look out at their class. Typically, most teachers don't feel like they have a plethora of awesome motivational methods to improve the situation. This article is going to change that a bit for the better.

You may not be aware that you can actually build motivation for school, education and class work. Initially, you should start the process of building motivation by relying on external items that are already very liked by students. Think of it this way. You can initially use a "carrot" to lead student to Literature, Algebra or History class, and once you've gotten and held their attention, you can reduce the reliance on external positives. It is sad that some families don't reliably teach their children the importance of school, but like any other area that is being overlooked in a child's life, teachers may be the ones to have to fill in the gap. That is certainly true here, but the good news is that improving a child's motivation is a lot easier than (figuratively) dragging a kid to school and forcing them to learn– which is what the situation may feel like now.

Money is a very effective external item that can serve to engage many unmotivated students to care more about school, class and education. Yes, ideally, children would come to love reading Hemingway, or find early American history enthralling, but money makes a great "hook" to start to transform how students view education. In the meantime, you are going to have to market school, classes and education like they were a pair of way cool jeans or a new iPad. You're going to be working to convince students that school is the only path to many of the things they very much need, want or value…which brings us back to money.

Our popular motivational poster, Poster #471 (shown above) does a great job of marketing school and education by linking them to something most students care a lot about: money. It shows students what they "earn" every second, minute, hour, day, month and year they spend in school. This poster is based on the belief that high school grads earn approximately $330,000 more per lifetime so it reflects life expectancy and earnings stats.

You can print this eye-catching, motivational school poster for free and post it in your classroom, or the hallways of your school. You can download the free motivational poster here. Feel free to share it with your colleagues. Obviously, one motivational strategy can't fix all the boredom, disinterest and yawns, but it's a terrific first step. Most strategies are free but you will find many in our books, in person professional development workshops and online courses too.

Yes, this "artificial" motivation may not start off being nearly as beneficial and reliable as the real thing, but now that you may have your students considering the possibility that school just might be important to them, while you have their attention, you can help them discover what they could love in the world of education.

Work Refusers


Some students don't start off unmotivated– but they sure end up that way. Among other university training classes that most teachers haven't taken but may wish that they had is Work Refusers 101. Some of your youngsters become so discouraged or frustrated by school that they stop working altogether or do as little school work as they possibly can get away with. Often, these are very well-intentioned students who have learned over time that doing nothing seems a lot less painful than taking a test or completing a homework assignment. Since teachers often have little real-world training or tested strategies for work refusers, these youngsters can quickly become a nightmare to teach. They may appear to be your most unmotivated student since they do so little actual school work, and require constant help to complete almost any academic task.

Here's the secret to successfully engaging your work refusers in school: They are not necessarily unmotivated. They can have great motivation but the child has simply learned that shutting down and doing nothing seems to yield better results than taking action. In your Psychology classes, this pattern was described as Freeze, Flight or Fight. Work refusers camp out in Freeze. That makes these students seem passive-aggressive or oppositional when really they just freeze and have trouble moving beyond that. To best understand, look back in your life for a time you crawled into bed and wouldn't come out. It may have been after a traumatic experience or a romantic setback or a job loss, and for you, a short-term thing– but for these students, freezing up has become a long term, entrenched pattern.

So, motivational methods will only take you so far with this population. And, as you may have noticed, it is so easy to get caught in a power struggle with them. So there's what won't work. Here comes what will work: step-by-step, slow transition from doing nothing to gradually doing something. So, if the student typically does two paragraphs of handwriting, maybe we aim for two paragraphs and one more sentence. The next step might be two paragraphs of handwriting and two sentences…and so on. The steps need to be tiny and when the student balks at a step, consider dropping back a bit and carefully observing for anxiety. When this student's anxiety goes up, their work production goes down. Over time, you will learn to calibrate their work load with their anxiety. The more you can create a cooperative team feeling while avoiding increasing their anxiety, the more work you will ultimately get out of this youngster.

We devote entire classes to teaching about work refusers so we are just skimming the surface here for what you can do, but we thought it was important that you realize that the student who may look the most unmotivated, can be much more accurately viewed as a child rife with anxiety issues.

We have been getting the same classroom management questions over and over again at the Live Expert Help area of our web site (http://www.youthchg.com). Many of you have been asking how to get young people to behave in class and group settings. Many of the counselors have passed along requests from teachers who want to know how to stop the non-stop discipline problems that disrupt the learning process.

K-12 Keynote Speaker Ruth Herman WellsI'm the director of Youth Change Workshops, Ruth Herman Wells, M.S. I've spent my whole career amassing the best classroom management methods that exist. I'm going to share five of my favorites here, along with a couple bonus methods.

Kids are not born instinctively knowing how to talk one at a time, keep their hands to themselves and stay quiet when others are talking. In fact, most– if not all– of the behaviors that adults want to see in their class or group setting, must be taught. Years ago, a teacher, for example, could count on most families to train their offspring to talk one at a time, keep their hands to themselves, etc. Now, many of you may find that many of your students appear to have little preparation from home on how to behave appropriately in the classroom. That's part of why classroom management has been getting harder and harder.

Although perhaps it should be the parents' job to train their offspring to have basic behavior management and self-control skills, it's quite clear that many families cannot or will not provide this essential training. So, to get the discipline and order you want in your classroom, school or site, you will have to provide that training.

You must be thorough, covering everything from attendance and punctuality to when to talk and what to wear to school. Plus, remember that stating expectations is never enough. You must drill skills into habits, and don't forget to defuse the apathy and adjust negative attitudes so students are sufficiently motivated and disposed to perform the behaviors that you want. You must cover all three areas: skills, motivation and attitude. We call this essential preparation to be a student School Skills Training.

5 Fast Strategies to Stop
Classroom Management Problems
Before They Start

 

1. Finish What You Started

classroom management methodsGetting students to finish their work can be a year-long battle. Win the war on task completion by helping students see the value in finishing their work. Our Poster #323 provides a quick way to give you a motivational technique to help students understand why it is critical that they finish class assignments. You don't need to buy the poster, you can simply say the phrase pictured, although the poster offers a constant reminder instead of a transitory one. Of course, it takes more than one intervention to motivate students, but you can find hundreds of additional methods on our site.

BONUS METHOD: Motivating students to care about finishing their work is a necessary first step but you will also have to teach task completion skills. Be sure to teach: How to hear assignments, how to remember assignments, when to start assignments, how to remember to bring homework back to school, and so on. There are actually a lot of skills that must be taught if you want students to be able to complete their work once they have become more motivated to do so.

 

2. Take Out Talk-Outs

Your students may feel that they can talk out at will, and say whatever they want whenever they want, even though you have set a different standard for your classroom. To convincingly teach children and youth that talk-outs are a problem, reverse roles. Have a young person assume the job of teacher, for example, and then have that youth attempt to complete an easy task such as teaching the class to remember a five digit number– but the task will be tough to accomplish amidst many talk-outs. Offer the role play teacher a big prize for successfully completing the task, but coach the other students to talk out at will. The role-play teacher will be unable to successfully complete the task. Ask the class to suggest a rule regarding the amount of talk-outs.

BONUS METHOD: Students do not magically know how many times to talk out in your class or group. Plus, many of them lack the skills to discern it on their own– so be sure to have every group or class set a standard. It is unfair to expect youngsters to adhere to a standard that is unquantified.

 

3. How Do You Get Help Around Here?

Students don't start the school year magically knowing how to ask for help. This frequent event can become an on-going classroom nightmare when students don't know how to appropriately perform this basic classroom skill. Some students may believe that it's okay to act out when they're frustrated or want help. Turn that around with this fun intervention. Ask the students to devise "The Top 10 Ways the Teacher Can't Tell You Need Help." Elicit answers like: you glare, you mutter, and you run out of the room.

 

4. Who is Supposed to Be in Charge?

Some young people act like they are in charge. To provide clarification, ask the group to name all the qualifications that teachers, counselors, coaches– or whatever your job is– are supposed to have. List their responses on the board, eliciting answers like "a college degree" and "a teaching license." After the list is complete, have the group determine who has those qualifications, the adult or a student.

 

5. Pay Attention to This

Most teachers expect students to pay attention–classroom management strategies without ever teaching exactly how to do that, or why students should even comply with that expectation. Start by motivating students to see the importance of establishing and maintaining focus. To do so, have your students list all the jobs and businesses that they may wish to do. Write their responses in a column on the board. Ask your group to determine the potential consequences of inattention in those occupations. Write those answers in a second column. Encourage the group to craft amusing and dramatic answers that will convince students of the importance of staying focused. For example, have your students identify exactly what is likely to happen if a surgeon or truck driver is inattentive.

Educational Article on Character Ed by Classroom Management ExpertCharacter ed is becoming more and more popular in schools all over the U.S. But in our behavior improvement workshops around the country, more and more educators and counselors are complaining that character ed is not the solution for every youngster. They want to know what is wrong with character ed approaches.

I'm Author, Trainer Ruth Herman Wells and I think I have the answer. Even better, I think I know how to fix what's going wrong with character ed so your classroom and behavior management can improve right away.

First, let's make sure you know what character ed is. Character ed approaches attempt to use character-building to ensure or engender appropriate behavior. A character ed approach to bullying might require that the bully apologize and make amends to the victim of the bullying, for example.

Character ed methods essentially use a single force to elicit satisfactory conduct. The logic is that by building character, conscience and moral values, students' behavior can be improved or maintained at a satisfactory level. Unfortunately, human beings are not "uniform" creatures. Single-mode interventions of any type can be expected to fail with at least a portion of any group. Character ed is subject to this potential flaw just like any other style of student management.

The education world does tend to move from trend to trend, and character ed may be a current one. This educational article will explain the biggest flaws and serious safety issues you may encounter if you use character ed, and will explain how to supplement character ed approaches to make them more effective with different types of youngsters. We'll also look at how to avoid the predictable safety issues that character ed methods can engender.

WHO DOES CHARACTER ED WORK WELL WITH?
Ironically, character ed works best with the students who least need it. So, character ed can most impact youngsters who have a conscience, remorse and values. Obviously, youngsters who fit that description are not likely to be your worst bullies and agitators.

WHO DOES CHARACTER ED WORK WORST WITH?
The sentence above may not be grammatically correct, but that is the least of your problems. Character ed works worst with students who lack a conscience, remorse and compassion.

A whopping 11-15% of young people will fit this description. The mental health term that might be applied by a counselor or other mental health clinician to some of these youngsters is "conduct disorder," but the rather grim bottom line is that character ed is utterly ineffective with these students.

You can can't successfully use conscience-based approaches with students who lack a conscience. These students will be your worst bullies and agitators yet character ed is virtually powerless to control them. These students are likely to be the source of many of your worst classroom and group management nightmares but character ed is utterly ineffective when used with them– plus, even more discouraging, safety concerns are often generated by relying on character ed techniques.

HOW CAN CHARACTER ED CAUSE SAFETY PROBLEMS?
Safety problems can easily be created or worsened by using character ed methods with conduct disorders (children without a conscience).

Here is an example: A conduct disordered child bullies another youngster. The bully is given classic character ed-style consequences such as being asked to apologize and make amends. Lacking relationship capacity, the child is unable to benefit from these relationship-based approaches, but it gets worse. Having been caught and required to make an apology may have angered or annoyed the bully, putting the victimized student at high risk of retribution.

ARE THERE OTHER SAFETY CONCERNS?
Character ed approaches often involve helping the misbehaved child understand the harm he has done to his peer. If you help the bully "understand" how his behavior upset or saddened the victim– which was his goal in the first place– aren't you almost for sure marking the victim for more torment?

Bullies love a strong negative reaction from their victims, and character ed methods often highlight the victims' negative reaction. The sorry side effect is to place a "kick me more" sign on the back of the victimized student. Expect the bully's problem behavior towards the victim to increase. It's easy to supplement character ed methods and eliminate the safety concerns. The most important step is to be sure all your staff are trained to know about conduct disorders. You must use a different set of interventions with conduct disorders. You can continue to use character ed methods with others if you are satisfied with the results that style of intervention delivers with some students. HOW ELSE CAN I ENHANCE CHARACTER ED TO WORK BETTER?
Character ed won't make up for a lack of skills, a bad attitude, or if students lack the motivation to improve their behavior. Add in those items, and watch the improvement. So, be sure to teach all the skills that you want students to use, and cover everything from what to say to where do hands belong and not belong. Any behavior that you expect, you must teach.

Without skills, students can not perform better no matter how much you build their character. Similarly, character ed usually doesn't make up for a bad attitude or poor motivation, so be sure to teach both of those. All of these interventions are not only appropriate for your youth and children who have ADHD, but these interventions may also be essential training for any youngster. Remember: It's normal for many children and youth to be high energy and in motion. Because of that, these interventions should be offered as basic training for all students.

Show Both the Problem and Goal Behaviors
Children with ADHD may be comfortable, but the adults who work with them, may be uncomfortable with their speed. When you tell ADHD-affected children to "stop it," they may not be clear what the problem is, even though it may be obvious to you. To give ADHD-affected children a picture of both the problem behavior and goal behavior, consider using these terms that paint a picture:
 

► Slow-Rolling Behavior: This conveys a rate of motion that may be too slow to work well.
► Speed-Racing Behavior: This term conveys a rate of motion that may be too fast to work well.
► Pace-Setting Behavior: This conveys a rate of motion that isn't too fast or too slow, but just right.

Follow-up: After students understand the terms, have them demonstrate of each term. Or, students can create pictures explaining each term, and the pictures can be posted on the wall as visual reminders.

Other options: For younger students, use puppets to practice pace-setting behaviors, then discuss the benefits and hazards of each type of behavior in the jobs and businesses that interest your students.
 

Teach About Attention-Grabbers
ADHD children– and plenty of other children– don't know how to manage distractions. Use a loud radio and other attention-getting devices to create distractions, then teach your students to identify and rectify the problem. You can assist them to identify what to say, when to say it and how to say it. For example, students can be assisted to develop specific phrases to alert teachers that they need help to manage a distraction. Consider having your students use the words "attention-grabbers" as a memorable way to describe distractions.

Follow-up: Have students identify potential attention- grabbers in their future work places and how to manage those distractions. Be sure to have your youngsters identify what can happen if work place distractions are not properly managed, especially for occupations like pilot, doctor, rap singer, and hair stylist.

Thoroughly Teach Paying Attention
ADHD children often need lots of repetition and practice before acquiring new skills. To teach ADHD-affected students and others how to better pay attention, use metal and a magnet to illustrate how students' eyes should be "stuck" on the teacher. Next, have students practice having their eyes, ears and mind "stuck" on the teacher.

Teach Hand Raising Before You Expect It
If you require hands to be raised prior to speaking, carefully teach the skill before expecting it. Show the desired way to perform hand raising and also problematic ways. Teach students that waving around your arms is "windshield wiper arms" then ask them for "flagpole arms." Demonstrate both methods to ensure comprehension. Next, be sure to practice appropriate hand raising.

Follow-up: Have students identify jobs that often require workers to have permission prior to speaking. Include jobs like lawyers in court, pilots on the radio, and office workers in a meeting. Ask students to identify the consequences these workers may face for frequent talk-outs. Assist students to view hand raising as essential preparation for their future jobs.

No Statues Allowed
It is normal for children and teens to be active. Whether or not a child lives with ADHD, many children are ill-suited to sit extremely still for 50 to 90 minutes at a time. Children and teens make lousy statues. So instead of requiring your students to sit still, consider negotiating what motion you'll allow. So, you might not permit a child to bang his feet on the chair in front of him, but you might allow doodling or foot tapping that doesn't disturb others. Assist the child to practice doing the negotiated behavior so that the foot tapping isn't stomping, for example.

Techniques to motivate studentsWe know that schools have had a rough year when all of our August on-site school inservice dates are booked by April. We ran out of summer inservice dates this year earlier than ever before. Recent research released in the past few weeks confirms that this was a rough school year. Specifically, the national dropout rate is becoming so egregious that it has become an epidemic, many of the researchers suggest.

The content of this article is taken from my teacher training workshops. I'm Youth Change Professional Development Director, Ruth Herman Wells, M.S. and I've worked for decades to find and create awesome student motivational techniques that work so much better than conventional strategies.

For years, in our teacher workshops, I have talked about the national dropout rate running at about 25% on average. New K12 educational articles are pegging that rate now at a depressing 30%. An article reprinted by the Public Education Network, observed that we would never tolerate a system where 30% of iPods malfunctioned or 30% of FedEx packages never arrive, but that is essentially what has happened with K-12 education. 30% of high schoolers are not graduating.

Years ago, moms and dads reliably conveyed to their offspring the importance of school, and provided assistance with homework, attendance and school performance. That sentence does not fit our contemporary times very well.

If significant numbers of families are not gearing their sons and daughters to be motivated, prepared, skilled students, then someone has to take on that task, or many students will continue to flounder, and a whopping one-third will ultimately drop out. If schools would dedicate themselves to providing School Skills Training, they could stop working with untrained, unmotivated kids, and start working with trained, motivated students instead. We are not talking about re-stating expectations and rules. We are talking about literally training kids to be students, just like you train them to learn long division or conjugate a verb.

If schools took 10% of the time and energy that they are compelled to dedicate to high stakes testing and shifted their efforts to School Skills Training, the worsening dropout rate might be reversed. What should School Skills Training include? Any skill, attitude or motivation that students need to succeed.

For students at risk of dropping out, motivation might head the list, followed by attendance and punctuality. All students need specific skill training in areas like teacher interaction skills, homework management skills, class discussion skills, hallway behavior, peer interaction skills, requesting help, and so on. If your school expects these skills from students, but does not teach them, that is unfair. It is not fair to expect skills you have not taught.

That Boost Student Retention:

Teachers Are Lousy Mind Readers
The newly released studies of dropouts emphasize that there are many reasons that students quit school. The studies also note that if students receive help with their concerns, dropping out may become less necessary. For example, a student may feel the need to stay home to watch younger sibs. If that concern is communicated to a teacher, then the teacher or school may be able to assist. For example, the teacher might locate a social service or church group to help with baby sitting. Since students often do not vocalize the concerns they face that interfere with school, teach students that teachers are lousy mind readers, that they will have to tell the teacher exactly what the problem is so that the teacher can help.

Find Out Now What You'll Know Later
The new studies discuss that some students drop out to earn what seems like a lot of money. Help students understand that what looks like a lot of money now will look like "not enough money" later. There is a long and sad litany of the misery dropouts face. All students should learn about this reality as soon as possible. Here are just a few of the depressing realities of being a dropout in the new millennium; make sure your students know these facts so they don't have to live with them forever:

> Dropouts earn less than everybody else
> Most jobs require a diploma
> The jobs open to dropouts are becoming fewer and there may come a time, when there are   almost no jobs that will allow dropouts to apply
Dropouts often have to accept jobs that most people consider unpleasant, demeaning and   undesirable
> Dropouts usually do not earn enough money to pay their housing, food, utility and transportation bills
> Dropouts often have to work two jobs just to survive
> Dropouts can afford about 2/3 of a house or apartment if they work one job
> Dropouts may be only able to afford public transportation or drive cars that are considered old and not very desirable
> Dropouts are often stuck with the jobs no one else wants
> Dropouts are the first fired and last hired
> Dropouts can't afford health care and may have to endure physical discomfort, or even suffering

Diplomas Rule
From early on, students need to understand the worth of that magic piece of paper. The California School Board Association web site quotes a dropout named Cheryl, who noted that she didn't think a diploma would matter because she "didn't feel that you had to have a high school diploma to get a job. But now you do. There's been jobs I wanted but they'd say 'high school diploma,' 'high school diploma.'" Teach your students about Cheryl, or ask dropouts in your area to come in and convey their regret to your group. Teach your students that no diploma in the 2000s is like no coat in Minnesota in winter.

Drop Out, Lose Out
Motivational techniques for k12Convince students that dropping out is foolish. Stop referring to yourself as a teacher, and switch to banker– because each high school graduate earns $329,000 more than a dropout. A catch phrase to use: "Your diploma: So valuable, it belongs in your wallet." Another: "You've got a life. A diploma lets you live it."

Speak the Language on High-Tech Planet
The U.S. is becoming a high-tech place. Without education, you can't even keep up with the conversation. Demonstrate that to students by locating job applications posted on the internet, then ask students to complete the applications. Students will have to know terms like "PDF," "Adobe," "Function Key," "Word Doc," "Spam Filters," "URLs" and others. You don't learn these terms by missing school, yet some day most job applications may be online, and include high-tech terms like these. Ask your students if they'll be ready.

I'm a professional development presenter, author and keynote speaker, but I used to manage a treatment program for older adolescent felons, most of whom were longtime dropouts. Despite that obstacle and many more, we were able to get all of our students back in school, and were able to produce a 90% graduation rate over a five year period. This article includes some of the dropout prevention methods that were honed in that program, plus some newly created strategies too.

finish schoolThe world is getting more and more cold and inhospitable to people who lack that "magic piece of paper." More than ever before, that diploma is opening doors. More than ever before, doors are slamming shut to people who lack that high school degree. It's never too soon to start letting your youngsters know that their diploma may ultimately be as important as the air they breathe. Regardless of the age of your students, now is the time to let them know that diplomas are becoming essential to survival. It is up to you to ensure that your students aren't frozen out of future opportunities.

Dropout Prevention Poster 12Perhaps it is because the world is becoming so bleak and hostile for dropouts that we have been getting so many comments about our Drop Out, Lose Out series of posters. (Poster #12 is pictured at right.) Without a doubt, these posters capture how grim and difficult life may be for today's youth if they lack a high school diploma. The facts cited on the posters have drawn so much comment, that we will provide a synopsis of those grim statistics here so you can easily pass on the information to your students.

If you just want those chilling facts, then you just have to scroll down a bit. If you also want additional specific, ready-to-use ideas how to convey the bad news more effectively and powerfully, you can adapt and use the surprising methods shown on our "Drop Out, Lose Out" posters.

Here are two ways to immediately use what you see on those posters (Posters #10 through #21.) First, you can do the activity pictured. So, for example, on Poster #12, you see stacks of money being rejected. Get stacks of play money and a stamp that says "rejected." You may also want to get a stamp that says "accepted" to give the activity a potentially positive twist.

Motivational School Posters Second, you can verbally convey the images shown on the posters. So, for example, on Poster #14, you see a complex job application on a computer monitor. You could quiz students verbally on how to complete such a complicated application. This activity could be a very potent way to demonstrate that job hunting could be difficult or impossible without education and a diploma. So, as you look at the posters, decide whether to actually do the action portrayed, or to verbally capture it.

No matter how you decide to use these innovative, more effective dropout prevention strategies, you will be powerfully and persuasively convey the bad news about dropping out to your at-risk and unmotivated students. The goal of all these rather tough techniques is to absolutely convince your youngsters that life without a diploma is like Minnesota in winter.
